mxlinux and i3 is not a perfect marriage

For issues with MX that has been modified from the initial install. Example: adding packages that then cause issues.

mxlinux and i3 is not a perfect marriage

#1 Post by drogon69 »

I've been researching some stuff in mxlinux and i3 for about a month now, but so far not a perfect marriage in some programs and software in mxlinux and i3.

what is it about, well in an archlinux you can open pamac manager without floating or not windows in any i3.

but within mxlinux and i3 a lot of problems have arisen, for example as far as I know and see you can't deliver a distro with snapshot only i3 iso and that is a pity I personally think.

why does this not work for the simple reason whatever you try to program inside the .config it will not work ,

example if you try to open synaptic it won't work neither will floating , you can open it via root in terminal but then can't install nothing , same in many programs within mxtools , some of them don't work because they may need floating , a bit very strange if you ask me because this is not with everything inside mxtools.

suppose you would remove xfce as an example and keep i3 about how are you going to open snapshot now , ah you think via root , yes ok maybe you can make a snapshot like that , but then what , via the software channels of synaptic or inside mxtools you can also don't use the software tool anymore because with floating or without it won't open , in short i3 and mxlinux is not a perfect marriage.

and i have tested different i3 configs within i3 from different distros , rofi works perfectly , but there are a lot of things that just way inside i3 are not compatible with mxlinux
the only good news is that i3 mxlinux runs under 200mb ram for me and that is one of the lowest rams i have ever seen.

i have 2 perfect distro even with polybar , rofi and dmenu all working inside , but to install software its only possible in terminal under any users and thats why some software inside mxlinux and i3 , wil not work perfect , if you know how to fix show me but you can not i have try many things inside .config (one word not working at all)

update

i think i have find away to a working mxlinux i3 , i have test alot of configs so far and distro but maybe , this config wil work , it opens under ubuntu focal , so why the hell wil it not run under mxlinux debian that is very strange , but i let you know or make a video proof ot it this day. so what i do is make 2 virtualbox and network share that i can put the new config on mxlinux from the tester i3 distro of ubuntu focal and mayby sysnaptic wil run 9_9

I think you are missing a policykit authenticator running. many window managers don't run them automatically, unlike the Desktop Environments.

i3 works wonderfully on MX and antiX. No problems at all.

@drogon69 It sounds like you are not exactly comfortable setting up effective i3wm & dwm environments. I provided you links to my dwm posts & tutorials in another thread; here is a link to my i3wm materials. You are free to use them. Perhaps they will help you get through some of your challenges. https://eirenicon.org/?s=i3wm

well, none-root level mx tools seem to be ok.

adding the launch of the polkit authenticator and root level apps appear to be OK. I'm not i3 expert by any means, so I don't know much about all the tiling options but here's mx-boot-options running along side synaptic.

i3 and dwm are not officially supported on MX, not because of lack of caring, but lack of time. so rather than constantly crying "not working" and screaming out into space.... how about being part of the solutions rather than part of the problems?

AVLinux has adapted MX to work with openbox and since MX is based on Debian, I really don't think getting i3 and dwm working would be too hard, especially since people like andyprough and manyroads have had good success.
