Mascot

#1 Post by adeplus »

This may not be the right place. If so, I beg you to place it where it corresponds.

Returning to a thread that said something about a mascot for the MX-Linux distribution, it occurred to me to propose Muskox. Basically, because it contains an initial M and a final X.

This is the page that wikipedia dedicates to this animal. It seems quite calm, solid, large, with strong defenses and... warm.

Out of curiosity, I have also looked for an alternative but I haven't found in the dictionary any suitable concept that begins with M and ends with X.

I admit that the name is not very evocative, but it seems that it's not a disadvantage because there is some celebrity whose last name is Musk. I guess the world is used to hearing it without its smelly connotation. Or not...

It can also be said that its appearance is reminiscent of the GNU project mascot, so it seems appropriate, although the penguins are a bit far away at the opposite pole.

Interesting idea. Maybe @Auro Kumar Sahoo or someone could make a mascot logo based on a public domain or Creative Commons image?

Interestingly (to me anyway), Muskoxen are poles apart from Penguins. (Literally poles apart: muskoxen live in the Arctic, penguins live in the Antarctic.)

Sounds good to me. As far as I'm concerned MX is the official distribution of the Northern Hemisphere. Or maybe between penguins and muskoxen MX has the world covered?

What about manx (tailless cat)?

Might also note the similarity of a muskox to the GNU mascot.

I like it, but could cause some confusion, accusations of trademark infringement (?), or something if not careful.

Musk oxen and gnus don't even remotely resemble each other as an image search for each animal shows.

Although it's ultimately up to the Leadership Team to decide, personally I don't see why MX needs a mascot. MX has been around for years without one, and I don't think there was a mascot for MEPIS (it's predecessor) or antiX either.

Maybe not, but the GNU characterization looks very similar to a muskox to me:

Actually, now that you mention it, the GNU mascot looks more like a muskox than a gnu to me.

Now that you mention it, that doesn't look very much like a gnu. More like an Asian water buffalo. Gnus have different-shaped horns and ears that stick out like a deer's.
