#1 Post by beersloth »

See attachment - would be most concise,

It looks like a Notes application. Do you have an icon in your system tray that indicates a notes application? If so right click on it and quit.

It's the Notes widget and you must have added it to the desktop yourself. Click the "peanut" icon (3 bars) in the upper right corner of the desktop and a vertical bar will appear along the right of the widget containing a red delete icon (among others.) Click that then click the peanut icon again to dismiss the menu that appeared the first time you clicked it.

This is the second time in a month or so this issue has come up. I wonder what it is that people are doing to inadvertently add the widget?

IIRC F6 is a shortcut for new note(s). Try disabling shortcuts/hotkeys

Not on my MX-KDE system. The only function key shortcut is F4 for the drop-down terminal. Looking in Settings Manager > Shortcuts I don't see any shortcut keys for installing or invoking the Notes widget.

I think people are just exploring their OS (because they don't have anything else to do because, being MX Linux, everything's working fine out of the box for 99% of the users), seeing the Notes widget, installing it to try it out, deciding they don't like it, then they get stuck trying to remove it because Notes doesn't behave like other widgets where a long left-click will cause the vertical bar with control buttons to appear on the right.

I believe this widget was installed by default. One of the kids had an older laptop with a somehow faulty keyboard and everytime when she closed the lid (without shutting down first) one of the F keys was pressed. Hundreds of yellow squares appeared in the morning :)

"Problem" was solved by removing the widget

hello beersloth and everyone
right-click on kde Desktop to select >Configure Desktop from menu.

choose the >Mouse Actions tab.

by default the top one is Middle Button = Paste.

That indicates in Desktop = Paste using Note.

A stray Note can be a sign of a stray Middle click in the Desktop.

Change the assignment of middle-click or remove the action; in the Desktop Folder Settings - Plasma window.

You're right, I think I am accidentally tapping three-fingers on the touchpad which is causing this.

Thanks for resolving this!
