Right-click Menu Editing

I've been playing around with the right-click menu in Xfce when the desktop icon layer is turned off.
(Desktop - Menus Tab - Include applications on desktop right click. Icons Tab - Icon Type - None)
MX Menu Editor doesn't edit the top level launchers. And finding replacement icons is not simple.
I tried Menulibre, and it's a nice editor. It "knows" which icon set is currently selected and takes you there automatically. But it broke MX Tools; that whole sub-menu disappeared.
I wanted to try LXMenuEditor, but it needs java and I didn't want to bother.

I've search the forum, but my search-fu is weak, thousands of hits on the word menu alone.
Does anyone have anything to add to this subject? TIA.
I guess I'll need to do it the long way, by hand.
