MX Fvwm myExt + Xfce-Fvwm-EXT (respin)

#1 Post by rasat »

This is MX 19.3 FVWM3 myExt respin. This respin includes a collection of FVWM configs. Inspired by Gnome Extensions that make gnome multifunctional. This gave the name "FVWM myExtensions". It started with the new FVWM3 (F? Virtual Window Manager), as an experiment and became a fully functional base that makes "my" daily computer workflow faster, simpler and more efficient. This is a model for you to use, modify or create your own.

Screenshot displays some of the extensions (ver. 0.9.7)

This collection makes the desk different from what you may have experienced before. It has a modern look but the behavior and navigation are similar to the functions of the mid-90s before Win95 was introduced.

If you are new to FVWM and wondering what it is all about. FVWM is a Window Manager (WM). What sets it apart from other WMs, it is also a Virtual window Manager (VM). Among the powerful fvwm features is the virtual desktop, which allows you to place windows on an area much larger than the actual size of the visible display.
The FVWM3 install package comes with a minimal startup configure. It gives the user the choice of expression. Details such as the appearance of windows, function of panels, pagers, and programs are created and defined by the user.

BACKGROUND

1. Based on MX-19.3_flux_base_x64.iso by m_pav. A minimal MX Fluxbox with basic applications and MX Tools.
2. Fluxbox and Xfce are removed.
3. MX 19 package fvwm3_1.0.1-0.1~mx19+1_amd64.deb.
Note: Version 1.0.2 is on hold. EdgeScroll does not allow the mouse cursor to scroll into the next page at the screen edge. Fixed in the next release 1.0.3.

The new substantial update is now ready which makes Fvwm3 myExt a full version 1.0. It is optimized for screen resolutions 1024x768 to 1920x1080. New features such as navigation buttons, wallpaper panel frames, and an improved virtual window 3x2 desk. With the latest fvwm3 git 1.0.2-103.

Version 1.9 includes key bindings speeding up the features, such as “alt-m” (window maximize 145 175) and “alt-t” (thumbnail). The mouse or key “alt-d” (Desk 2x2) makes your small or large screen resolution go beyond the actual size of the visible display. With a pager (miniature view of the desktop) managing the virtual windows with ease of mouse stroke.

Re: MX Linux 21 FVWM3 myExt (respin)

Got inspired to make one new MX 21 FVWM3 myExt respin when seeing the well-developed and polished MX 21. This includes the latest FVWM3 version 1.0.4-65 and myExt 1.9.9 config collection. Xfce and Libre Office are removed.

The Fvwm3 development has focused on the use of multi-monitors. The myExt on the virtual desk has a mouse scroll feature that allows gliding from one page to another (2x8) on a single monitor/screen. It is similar to having a large paper sheet of 8 screens (click the image thumbnail}.

I changed the OP title because this new 3.1.3 makes the usage of the collection of extensions different from the previous versions.

Now it is a user-oriented model to use, modify and create your own extensions. One-time install and then upgraded with Extension Installer when there is an update. This graphical installer makes it user-friendly for those who prefer a quick setup of their choice. The update is handled through the GitHub repository.

How does it work? Make a test run.
There is one new respin in SourceForge site that has just been recognized with a Rising Star award by SourceForge. :number1:

( MX21-Fvwm3-myExt-3.1.4-x64.iso )

EDIT:
ver 3.1.4, autologin, MX Installer icon, and home folders.

Very interesting. I try one year ago and now have I installed it. The installer work well making things easier to manage. Today there was new update 3.1.4. Great!!! One question, on SourceForke it sais "co-exist with the other Fvwm based WMs and DEs, such as Xfce, LXDE, and NsCDE". How do it work?

One comment, replace demo login with autologin.

Thanks. This was possible because I got great support for the yad checklist solution on Yad-Common, and the awk/sed solution on StackOverflow.

New iso 3.1.4 is uploaded in SourceForge (autologin, MX Installer icon, and home folders).

Now when the base is ready, the next thing TO DO is to find and create new extensions and encourage users to make them. This will be interesting when merging them with other WMs/DEs. Earlier in Linux, it was a common feature before the WMs/DEs become self-centric to use the command "<name WM> --replace". How does it work?

1. Load Xfce
2. In terminal or autostart: "fvwm3 --replace"

XFCE with Fvwm extensions is my new WM setting. :number1: I added fvwm.desktop file in .config/autostart/ with this string.

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Exec=fvwm3 --replace
Loads fast and use less memory when Xfce run alone. This is the alternative to Gnome shell extensions and 100x better.

Forgot to mention, rename .fvwm/local.config to config to enable Fvwm menu.

Users have been asking for an Xfce-Fvwm -EXT respin. This helped to add a few scripts checking the Fvwm version, removing tmp files, and correcting the autostart. Version 1.0.5 does a good job.

Download (MX21.1-Xfce-Fvwm-EXT-v1.0.5_x64.iso):
