HP DeskJet 2778 All-in-One Ink Advantage Wireless Colour Printer not working

EDIT
Finally purchased
HP DeskJet 2778 All-in-One Ink Advantage Wireless Colour Printer. But it is not working with Linux and
HPLIP 3.20.11 installed.
This thread was first started for getting suggestion to buy a suitable printer so the actual thread (regarding the printer not working) starts from the following post.
viewtopic.php?f=107&t=62042&start=30#p613792
~~~
Original Post ~~~
My old printer was
HP DeskJet 2135 All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer which worked very well with several versions of Linux and HPLIP 3.16.3
Now I need to buy a new printer which I wish is of similar class.
I am thinking of :
HP DeskJet 2335 All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer OR
HP DeskJet 2778 All-in-One Ink Advantage Wireless Colour Printer
Can any one tell me about the compatibility of these two printers (especially the first one '
2335') with Linux.
On the following website :
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ices/index
I found
HP_Printer.jpg
I am not sure what does the term "
HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2300 All-in-One" means.
Does it includes all printer in that series that start with 23XX, which should include HP DeskJet 2335 All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer also ?
Does anyone has any experience with any of these printers ?
How well do they work on Linux ?
Here's HP's own list of hplip compatible printers:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... ices/index
If your printer is shown to have full support, it will work excellently right out of the box. I also suggest that you avoid any printers on this list that only show partial support because no amount of tinkering on our part will result in complete functionality.
FWIW, " HP Ink Advantage" is technology that HP claims is much more efficient in how ink is deployed thus saving printer owners money --> YMMV.
Thanks for the reply, I know about that HP's list and the Ink Advantage technology, my question was 'slightly' different.
In that HP's list they have not directly mentioned
HP DeskJet 2335 All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer, rather they have mentioned "
HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2300 All-in-One" does that mean it will support that entire series of 23XX and so will it support
HP DeskJet 2335 All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer also ?
In fact, generally they add a "
series" at the end (as you already know), i.e.
HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 2700 All-in-One Printer series
So, this one is ok.
And that line may be for only the "2300" product particularly.
___________________________________________
But imho what's more important for both is:
P.S. The words "required" are added by me :)
Say, your old one, 2135 is "No" (requiring no proprietary drivers) ... working ootb.
Yes because they did not use the word
SERIES, in case of 2300 it is making me more confused. For my previous printer 2135 it is clearly mentioned in that list. So there is no doubt about it. But 2335 is not mentioned clearly so I wish to know if any one has any experience with it.
I apologise for my ignorance, but can any one tell me in short how can a wifi enabled Printer / scanner help me to overcome the driver / hardware incompatibility with Linux.
If I have a wifi enabled printer can I straight off print from my computer using wifi ? Without the need of any extra driver or software ?
Imho that (wifi) only provides communication / connection bw. the pc and the printer. Instead of using a wire...
So, it's best to connect HP someway and ask to be sure before purchasing.. (also about the "series" subject ... )
I think that I can clear up some of your confusion: I think that the HP list was published after the 2300 was put on the market but before the 2335 model was made and that the list will be updated to include the 2300 series when the next iteration of hplip is released.
No and no. A driver of some description will be required.
At the beginning of this topic you wanted to know if the HP DeskJet 2335 All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer is compatible with Linux and MX in particular and the simple answer is: not yet.
My advice to you is that there are several other inexpensive HP inkjets that are on the list --> pick one of those and get on with things. Otherwise you are going to have to wait an indeterminable amount of time.
My problem is that unfortunately, I have too many requirements for the printer :
[*] Should work with Linux (Esp Mx and Ubuntu)
[*] Should be HP to be on the safe side
[*] Should not be expensive
[*] Per page cost of printing should be low
[*] Should have Print + Scan + Copy option.
And even if I find one, in a lot of cases it is either not available in my area or can not be exchanged or returned if it does not works.
So facing a lot of trouble buying a simple printer.
Moreover, many Linux forums are not as helpful as Mx. Yesterday one forum simply deleted my post about printer, saying that their forum is for 'technical' posts only. Though the description of the forum was "
Questions and Answers for users of Linux, Fr**BSD & other U**x . . .".
Linux already has hardware incompatibility issues. Add to it the arrogance of the kind "
hey you newbie . . . how dare you enter this room" scares many away from a wonderful OS like Linux. Thanks, in Mx forum I have never faced such behaviour.
I feel it will be nice if there is a forum or sub-forum for at least some common peripherals, where Linux users could visit and add details about that piece of hardware and some details about their distro. Nearly every Linux user must be using a Printer, Graphic Tablets, Monitors, Web-cams or Networking devices. If even 10% of all Linux users enter information there, in the long run it might help many.
I have an HP Deskjet 3630 all-in-one which cost $79.99 Canadian and which works perfectly with MX
I also have this HP Neverstop Laser all-in-one which works perfectly as well
https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/hp ... r/14469370
This printer has a purchase cost of $360.00 Canadian, but it comes with enough toner pre-installed for 5000 page impressions. When you do the math and include the cost of paper it works out to a per page cost of $.084 which is about 40% of the per page cost for the 3630 all-in-one above.
HP Deskjet 3630 seems is not available in my area.
HP Neverstop Laser perhaps does not has scanning feature.
It might be that same printer is marketed in different regions with slightly different model number.
For example most of the Deskjets that I can find are of either
21XX, 23XX, 27XX, 41XX or 47XX series.
Generally the
advantage series printers have lesser per page cost.
Posted this question on Hardware Recommendation site of
If Linux users can not post such questions on Linux forum / Hardware recommendation forum then where do they get advise from ?
If I put myself in new user’s shoes, I can get the feel why most new users are 'slapped' away from the Linux world . . . unfortunately in most cases by other Linux users.
Uhm.. kind little reminder.. if you first get a number of responses, and then start about "linux users" as not being helpful, how do you think that makes us feel on this forum where we DID give you responses?
It would be nice if you shared with where your "area" is, otherwise it will be the same as asking where the light button is in your house. We won't know.
I apologise to make you feel that way. But perhaps you did not read my previous post. I clearly mentioned
"Thanks, in Mx forum I have never faced such behaviour".
Because this was a hardware related post and a lot of newbies must be facing this same problem so I said we should have a forum / sub-forum and so to highlight the need for that I mentioned my experience here. Else I could also simply get the solution to my problem on this forum and walk away . . . I am sure people on Mx Forum 'listen' to members SO I wrote all this here. Why will I write it on a forum where they behave like bullies and just delete posts. Sort of saying "GET OUT" to new users of Linux.
No need to apologise. I can understand. No problem.
Well . . . in this part of the world, where I am presently located, it seems that printer is not sold.
Reason, only HP will be able to tell.
Here HP markets only laptops in
Envy series, not printers.
Oh! I just recognised your forum name! You're the one who contributed the Chinese temple picture for the MX19 wallpapers! We communicated on your WP submissions.
Hmm, I guess it's very possible that in your part of the world that HP and other manufacturers may offer different ranges of printer/AIO products. What is the range of Brother products like where you live? I can't help with HP but probably could give some suggestions for Brother multifunction printers (MFC).
However, if you give us your general location --> Country, but a city close to but not your own, we can recommend the best options from what is readily available. Also we may have other members in your area who can tell you exactly what printer to use.
Thanks.
Brother printers that are available here are mostly Monochrome Laser printers. So the price is a bit higher than my range but the main problem is it lacks scanning feature.
Some multifunction printers that are available are :
* Brother DCP-L2520D Multi-Function Monochrome Laser Printer with Auto-Duplex Printing
* Brother DCP-B7535DW Multi-Function Monochrome Laser Printer with Auto Duplex Printing & Wi-Fi
* Brother DCP-L2541DW Multi-Function Monochrome Laser Printer with Wi-Fi, Network & Auto Duplex Printing
But they are more expensive. I do not use printer that much. So no point spending so much money on it. At times several months I do not need to take a single print.
But from my knowledge most of them are not supported well on linux.
I find in my experience with Canon printers that the ink cartridges don't last very long. This is one of the reasons why I prefer HP printers. I currently have a HP Deskjet 1055 all in one printer that continues to work well for me but is a much older version than the examples you have posted earlier. I have mine hooked up via USB cable as I am not a fan of wireless.
I think that all of us are going at this the wrong way. I think that rather we should be asking you what are the dominant printer brands there? With that information we can narrow it down to which of those brands are known to work well with Linux.
Well more or less most of the brands are available but the range and variety is much less.
Or may be I should say in the lower price range may be very few options.
From the review I see more people buying Canon here but I might rather go for HP.
As I mentioned earlier, most of the Deskjets that I can find are of either 21XX, 23XX, 27XX, 41XX or 47XX series.
I am focusing more on HP 2335, in case it is not suitable then HP 2778.
My location changes a bit frequently. Right now I am stuck in some place where I am not supposed to be at this time . . . covid-19.
But in any case I will always buy it online. Especially I prefer Amazon because of their product reliability and service.
Brick & Mortar shops . . . no way.
As I move around so much, my requirements are very different, especially about printer.
I need
low price,
low print cost,
Multi-function and works well with
Linux, if possible out-of-the-box, because I usually do not install anything that is not in the official repo.
From what ever I have checked,
HP DeskJet 2335 All-in-One Ink Advantage Colour Printer OR
HP DeskJet 2778 All-in-One Ink Advantage Wireless Colour Printer
come closest to my requirement.
I just wish to know if they work well with Linux. What is mentioned on the HP site is a bit confusing.
In fact if wifi does not has any especial advantage, I might just go for 2335.
One of the main disadvantages to wireless printing has to do with the capabilities of your wireless modem/router. If your unit will allow you to assign your printer a static IP address, it's pretty much flawless. However, if your modem/router limits you to DHCP, every time the power goes out you will have to set up your printer's wireless connection again. In areas with unreliable electricity supplies that can get really aggravating in a quick hurry. A usb connection generally works first time and every time (of course barring faulty cables or usb ports).
I can think of two advantages to having a networked printer, whether wireless or Ethernet. One is a shared printer for multiple users, two is the ability to locate the printer elsewhere in the room than on the computer desk. The disadvantage is it's more difficult to set up. You have to configure the printer with a static IP address then configure CUPS in MX Linux to send print jobs to that IP address using the printer's driver which you have to find and select in the list, vs. just plugging in a USB cable and CUPS detecting your printer for you, plug-n-play style. (Unless the printer is made such that it's discoverable on the network, in which case it wouldn't be any more difficult to set up on a computer than a locally-attached printer.)
I do not know if I am deviating from the topic.
But feel interested in knowing. If wifi has that kind of restriction then say a non wifi printer, can it print using some HP app directly through USB cable ?
On my Brother multifunction printer that is wireless networked, my whole household is able to use it on their respective Linux or Mac computers, as well as Android or iphone devices. At least on Android, a phone app is downloadable that can print pdf/jpg/webmail direct from the phone to the printer. Scanning of docs can also be initiated from the phone, and the resulting pdf scan is saved on the phone.
As JayM has said, the ability for many devices to use the machine via network is a great advantage. It's not helpful for me to connect the printer to the network via USB connection to the "main" PC is because I multiboot and often reboot into another distro on the same machine. By having the printer connected wirelessly, the printer can be used without interruption by others without worry as to whether I'm rebooting or whatever on the main PC.
Tried 2778 with HPLIP 3.16.3
It did recognise the printer but said it did not have its driver.
Used built in driver for 2600 series and it did print through it.
Will install HPLIP 3.20.X and try again later.
What I wish to mention is HP's mobile app (HP Smart) for printing from mobile devices.
I tried it from a tab. Felt its an awful piece of software.
It does not even lets one print a basic page full of only text.
Asks users to register first (WITH THEIR MOBILE NUMBER).
Then used HP's print driver to print a test page, through pdf reader.
And finally had to use a third party app to test scanning from it.
If the way it tried to print (moving my page through some unknown servers) is how it works, then I will never like to print using wifi.
USB wire method is much safer.
You DID install the HP Printing package in MX Package Installer I wager? Just checking.
I use Simple Scan to scan pages.
Can't remember the rest. I don't care about giving someone my cell phone number or registering my printer that way, so that never registered in my brain how that went.
I also use Simple Scan but on Linux. On a mobile device there is not much option. Had to use HP's Smart App for all that and it was awful, to just take a trial print / scan also you need to provide them your mobile number.
Why ??? And seems they direct all printing docs through their servers. That means all my personal documents will be travelling out of my room. So Wifi option for a printer, as of now, does not seems too attractive to me. I will soon try out HPLIP's 3.20 version from computer (3.15 worked for printing but not for scanning) and then will be able to comment about that printer.
The HP Deskjet All In One 2700 series are fully supported in hplip, which makes the 2778 model the best choice right now.
Placing order for The
HP Deskjet 2778 Ink Advantage Wireless Printer.
Hope it will work
Guys unfortunately
HP Deskjet 2778 Ink Advantage Wireless Printer is not working well.
Some how it is able to give prints (
though hplip creates a lot of trouble) but not able to scan. Says no scanner attached.
hp-doctor even said this printer (2700 series) is not supported. But on HP's website it is mentioned that HPLIP supports that series.
Right now my main problem is to get the scanner working. I have tried this printer till now on Lubuntu as I do not wish to 'dirty' my Mx Linux.
Is it possible for any one to help me with this problem ?
have you tried installing the plugin?
if not type in the terminal hp-plugin and let's see maybe that is what is missing
Another thing that you can try is to check that the line "hpaio" appears in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and is not commented out (i.e., no "#" before "hpaio" on the line)
With regard to getting the scanner working, if the printer supports AirPrint, you could try installing the package sane-airscan which available from the repository. This supports "driverless" scanning on modern network scanners.
hp-plugin : It tried looking for plugin and then looked for the KEY. Said could not download the KEY. I asked it to proceed without it. Then it asked for root password. After entering that it gave an error :
error : Python gobject/dbus may be not installed
error : Plug-in install failed
I tried installing what ever I could find relevant but nothing worked.
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf hpaio is NOT commented
Looking info about the hplip error. i found that it's seems to be related to phython
https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1813768
"It appears that HPLIP needs Python 3, but Ubuntu defaults to the deprecated Python 2" <------ NOTE: Ubuntu
https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/691141
In the post# 7 someone is posting a solution (update "the symbolic link" of python inside /usr/bin/) <------ NOTE: Ubuntu
Maybe you can try it in lubuntu and see if that fixes it (if that work in lubuntu then i guess is easier to apply the equivalent method in MX linux).
See here for the printer specification:
https://store.hp.com/in-en/default/hp-d ... fr21b.html
Under the specificatons tab, the section PRINTER SPECIFICATIONS, it says:
Print languages HP PCL 3 GUI; HP PCLm (HP Apps/UPD); URF (AirPrint).
So it looks as though the printer does support AirPrint.
You will find the application sane-airscan under the Debian Backports tab in the MX package installer.
My earlier HP printer also worked through HPLIP but never had this python problem.
Will check that thread but it gets frustrating as I can not even return this printer and buy a different one.
What does this
Airprint does ? Is it some what like a direct wireless connection ? I have noticed in some kinds of wireless connections, data is routed through some servers. If that is the case then it is not a good way. I apologise, I have never used any kind of wireless connection for my printer. I always used USB connection. So do not have much knowledge about it.
Is there any article where it compares Direct wireless, Wifi / Network connection and Airprint ?
AirPrint, or eSCL is a protocol (or language) that was developed by Apple. It was promoted by Apple as a way of scanning from a mobile device and any device that supports AirPrint version 1.4 (such as your printer/scanner) should support eSCL. The protocol is a vendor-neutral network protocol that allows driverless scanning with suitable SANE backends via ethernet, wireless and USB connected devices. The package should identify scanners connected on your home network. So if you connect your printer to your router, hopefully with sane-airscan installed you will find that your scanner shows up as a scanner on your home network.
See the article in:
https://wiki.debian.org/SaneOverNetwork ... L_Protocol.
There is also some useful information here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SANE
If you are connecting your printer via a usb connection, I believe you may also need to install the package ipp-usb.
I thought mx19 /Debian 10 still had python2 coexisting with python3.
Unfortunately I can't really help you with HP since I use Brother printers.
Maybe change your thread title to clarify you are asking for help to get your hp printer up and running.
It's also hard because you don't want to connect wirelessly. It might be that you can set your printer with a static ip address in your network that won't require connections with outside sources to get it running? That's how my brother machine works. And the android app doesn't require registering personal details. .
Just a thought. Did you run "sudo sh hplip-3.20.x-plugin.run" from the command line to install the plugin? (Replace the x with your particular version number)
Also, it might be worth running "hp-check" from the command line to see if there are any missing dependencies.
Well . . . just asking you about the wireless option. Some one wrote, it is just a wireless way of connecting the printer, we will anyway need the drivers. So in that case how does it helps more, compared to the wired option ? Also I am sort of concerned about safety and privacy aspect when connecting through the wireless option. What do you suggest about that ?
The main problem right now is Scanning feature is just not working.
Sorry, I asked something slightly different :
(1) Someone mentioned that a driver is anyway needed even if connect by wireless. Is it so ? If not then will it help me in my 'case of non-functioning printer' especially if I do not have a multi-user (and multi-device) environment.
(2) I am concerned about the privacy aspect in wireless printing / scanning. I am afraid in wireless system there is possibility of my documents being routed through servers on the internet. Is it so ? Which in any case is unacceptable.
As I am not able to find a solution to the problem, I started scanning using an android app.
I dedicated one old mobile for this purpose, till I can find a solution to use my printer / scanner directly from my linux computer. Preferably using USB cable.
When I started using that app using Direct ... wireless connection, I felt 'may be' it is not that insecure compared to printing over wifi.
Can we do a similar thing on Linux ?
I know many of you have advised some packages but I am either not able to locate them on the repo or they are not working.
Like HP's website advises to use HPLIP 3.20.x but it is not working in my case.
"Just not working" doesn't tell us very much. Is your scanner detected in SimpleScan but just won't scan, or is it not even being detected, or what? And are you currently connecting to the printer via wifi or USB? People need details about the problem if they're going to be able to try to help you.
BTW HPLIP 3.20.9 is available in the test repo in MX Package Installer. Also I think you need to run
in a terminal, enter the root password if requested, then select either USB for a directly-connected printer or JetDirect for a networked printer.
Well, I can understand that this post is running since a long time and though most of the information that you asked for are already mentioned in the thread. I also understand that it will be difficult for any one to go through all the posts so what ever information you need I can sum up again over here.
Basically I am using
HPLIP 3.20.11
I have tried
Code: Select all
hp-doctor
hp-setup
hp-plugin
sudo hp-plugin
They all give some error or the other. Which have been posted here earlier. Tried installing N number of files from repo to solve any kind of dependency problem but till now none worked.
Like earlier
sudo hp-plugin used to give some 'proper error' but now it does not even says anything just mentions 'plugin could not be installed'.
In HP-toolbox I have mark my printer as another printer as it does not displays 2700 series in the list of printers and that some how helps me take prints. Though HP's website mentions that HPLIP 3.20.11 'fully' supports 2700 series but still hp-doctor says that 2700 is an unrecognised printer.
Regarding scanning,
Simple scan says
No printer was found.
I use an android app to scan from that printer from a mobile and then transfer the files to my computer.
So if their proprietary drivers are not available for this printer (or might not work in some cases) then why at all do they mention that printer's name in the list, especially when they also mention the term
FULLY supported for it ?
Anyway so what do I need to do with this printer ?
MX Test Repo
delete:
hplip-data 3.20.9
hplip-gui 3.20.9
Then open synaptic and install:
hplip 3.19.6
may have to install hplip-data first
then
hplip 3.19.6
hplip-gui 3.19.6
The 3.19 series worked for me the 3.20 would not find my printer as a scanner.
Thanks. Honestly speaking (as I mentioned earlier) I am trying out all this on Lubuntu on the same computer.
Do not wish to 'dirty' my MX install. Once it works on Lubuntu I will copy the same procedure on MX.
HPLIP that I downloaded is from HP's website. Should I stick to the repo version ?
Actually HP's website mentioned some 3.20.x version for 2700 series printer so I downloaded it from there.
Which Printer did you tried on ? The same as mine ?
Find it strange that 3.19.X worked but 3.20.X didnt !
HP's website actually states that you should install HPLIP from your distro's repositories if it's available there.
Find it strange that 3.19.X worked but 3.20.X didnt !
Not strange at all that a version of software that you downloaded from the Internet and installed doesn't work as intended vs. one that's been tested and packaged specifically for your Linux distro and meeting the distro's requirements.
Also, if 3.19 worked why are you bothering with 3.20?
Guys unfortunately
HP Deskjet 2778 Ink Advantage Wireless Printer is not working well.
Some how it is able to give prints (
though hplip creates a lot of trouble) but not able to scan. Says no scanner attached.
hp-doctor even said this printer (2700 series) is not supported. But on HP's website it is mentioned that HPLIP supports that series.
Right now my main problem is to get the scanner working. I have tried this printer till now on Lubuntu as I do not wish to 'dirty' my Mx Linux.
Is it possible for any one to help me with this problem ?
.
Hi
@mxmatrix
I've 2300 series or HP DJ AIO 2336 exactly that scanner fuction not working in MX-18.3. I'm using hplip 3.20.9 from test repo and update simple-scan and sane frontend.
1. what your running mx version ?
2. have you ever update sane-utils, libsane and libsane-common ? btw i'm with stretch 1.0.25 version here
read interesting from sane-project issue here :
https://gitlab.com/sane-project/backends/-/issues/381
Your device is supported by the ESCL driver:
You can update sane
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sane-project/sane-git
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
It is also supported by HPLIP in USB and NETWORK :
You can update Hplip here, latest version 3.20.9
Launchpad Hplip
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:thierry-f/printers-and-scanners
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
meanshile we're not ubuntu and not have ppa like project for side upgrade. we only hope mx dev can built suitable libsane update to test repo soon.
