download youtube videos, especially tutorials.
BTW, youtube-dl no longer works.

Open MX Package Installer, click the Stable Repo tab, type youtube into the search filter, and see what's available. I personally use YouTube DL GUI (for the very same thing as you, downloading certain tutorial videos in case the YouTube channel they're on ever goes away.) There are some others available also that might suit you better or be easier to use. I haven't tried them all, I just installed the one and found that it works for my needs.

clipgrab i think is the best alternative with gui. You will find it in the stable repo. There is also youtube-dlc which is an active community fork of youtube-dl, but i don't know about any gui.

Youtube-dl GUI uses youtube-dl. Anything using youtube-dl will be broken at the moment and maybe indefinitely.

That's interesting because I just used it to download a random video from YouTube and it's working fine. The thread you linked to says that the youtube-dl's GitHub page was taken down, not that the app no longer works. I downloaded & installed a youtube-dl update today from the repos. I've used it since, it is working fine for me.
I'm using it via the Terminal though.

Interesting. I saw the stuff about it being taken down on Github and then had it fail for a few links. Maybe I was premature in suggesting it was completely broken. I suspect that it will stop working for all eventually.

It works here, too, on terminal. Just sometimes it may not respond (something's busy with the address), after some time it's ok when you retry.
One of my favorites, but highly touchy :)

Well at least a uscan of the original GitHub repo is guaranteed to fail for legal reasons. So congratulations to the RIAA (Really Idiotic A*****e A******es).

The source code tarball is still available on the youtube-dl home page; that's where I got the 2020.11.01.1 source to make our latest packages. So an app just needs to get the source from there instead of github--I don't know where the various ones get their own internal versions. (Edit: SMPlayer gets updates from youtube-dl.org, so is not affected.

SMTube is not installed by default. Clitgrap which I installed yesterday works.

The installation went fine however it wont download, instead it opens VLC and plays the clip.

The SMTube developer removed the download feature so Google would not come after him, but I can still use it to download by installing uget and then telling SMTube to open a video with uget. You may have to manually add uget to the list of players in SMTube's settings.
Please do not spell ClipGrab "clitgrap". If you had not also misspelled "grab", Lord knows what kind of **** would have hit the fan, though at least one world leader may have tweeted his approval.
