Battery Question - T460s

#1 Post by Dugrath »

Hello again....as I find another issue with my laptop. Everything has been running fine, but I have found another bug, that seems from what I can conclude to be from UPower.

My t460s has 2 batteries and when it's unplugged, as battery 1 drains and battery 2 takes over, my laptop just shuts down. These other posts seem to confirm this is a long standing issue, I didn't have windows on here long enough to determine if its OS related or not.

EDIT: This did not happen on my Manjaro install ever. I had left my laptop unplugged plenty of times and this never occured. KDE 20.0? Mikah I think.

What does removing UPower do? Is there some type of alternative I should use? Or should I just do a uninstall reinstall and see if it self corrects?

Re: Battery Question - T460s

#2 Post by m_pav »

My T560 has no such issue. The external battery drains first then switches over when it reaches 5% as set by TLPUI, a utility to help control Power Management in Thinkpads. MX comes with tlp preinstalled but with a basic config. TLPUI is simply a user interface for TLP. You can install it through the standard repos.

The issue stems from a setting that tells your machine to shut-down when the battery is drained and though it sees 2 batteries, the first to drain triggers the shutdown event.

I would encourage you to check the BIOS version is up to date and if not, make it so. Lenovo are very good at providing very long term support through BIOS updates for their business class machines..

I'm not very computer savvy so for my Thinkpads (X240 & X260) I just copied the configuration for TLP found at github here. In the comments section there someone said it worked great for their T460.

Go here for the TLP documentation.

I upgraded TLP in the MX repo and as far as I know thus far, that seems to have worked. I looked at the github battery config and didnt see anything different from what is currently set.

still plan on upgrading the BIOS just need to find a flashdrive around. Gonna keep a video running and make sure it is actually fixed.

Thanks guys!
