Keeping home folder when upgrading [SOLVED]

#1 Post by Sparky »

I want to install KDE in more of my computers. Does the preserve home folder work ok?
What's the most I can keep after the upgrade?
So far I'm really impressed with KDE MX.

Depends on where you're coming from.
Absolutely discouraged is keeping a home folder from a newer KDE version.

I mean I am going to install KDE to replace the XCFE MX Linux. Maybe I should backup my home folder and replace it after the install?

So this is NOT an MX-KDE iso/install question? Because then it shouldn't be in this subforum. Installing KDE after is different than what you get when you install the MX-KDE iso.

Sparky, you better do it manually. Simple, old way: Then configuration files won't be included thus nothing to interfere.
Just copy home folder to somewhere on live-session, later copy back whatever you like: Pics, media, docs etc..

I did exactly this, during install the installer can preserve home and offers options if you have an existing home directory. If you choose to rename and start again you can drag and drop your files from user.001 to user and setup KDE from scratch. I would suggest another backup in case something goes wrong but it worked for me.
