[solved] guest in virtualbox not starting

#1 Post by eikin »

Hello, everyone,

I'm a absolute new in this forum and I hope that I can find a solution to my problem. I use MXLinux and I think it's great. A few months ago I did an update and after that Windows my Virtualbox did not work anymore. I can't remember what I did exatcty. When I open Vbox it opens as usual and there I see that Windows is turned off. When I start Windows these hints pop up...

Für die virtuelle Maschine Windoof konnte keine neue Sitzung eröffnet werden.

The virtual machine 'Windoof' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1).

Fehlercode: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Komponente: MachineWrap
Interface: IMachine {85632c68-b5bb-4316-a900-5eb28d3413df}

and then this one

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqsD4I ... sp=sharing

In this window it says that I have to do 'modprobe vboxdrv' and I do it in thunar root I don't get any result.

I need urgent access to the data and program.

My system

Same thing happened to me and it was a couple of months ago too. Seems it was an out-of sync local software repository.

This should be trivial to repair. The popup window that says "Kernel Driver Not installed" has the solution, but our devs have made it even easier than that.

Open MX Package Installer, search for VirtualBox and you'll see virtualbox in the results. It will have a grey checkbox on the left. Put a tick in the box, then click the reinstall button at the bottom of the window. Reboot when its finished and try your Windows VM again. If it's not fixed, let us know, if it is, please mark this as solved by editing your first post and in the post title, write [solved] in the title.

Open Thunar, navigate to /usr/share/mx-packageinstaller-pkglist/, open a terminal and type

Code: Select all

sudo ./rebuild_dkms_packages.sh
One problem is that you've added an Ubuntu PPA:

Code: Select all

           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/softmaker.list
           1: deb http://shop.softmaker.com/repo/apt wheezy non-free

If your system is missing the linux-headers that correspond to your running kernel, then the virtualbox-dkms installer will run and reach and end-point, but it will fail to build any modules. If you read the terminal output from the installer before closing the window, it will plainly tell you if it succeeded or failed. If you closed the terminal window when it looked like it finished without reading the last page of its output, you could easily miss a message telling you that no module was built, in other words, that it failed.

Just noticed that you have an old kernel, 4.19.0-1-amd64. Open MX Package Installer, Popular Applications tab and expand the Kernels section. Check the checkbox at the left of the MX 4.19 kernel (which is 4.19.0-9) and install it. It will also install the headers and rebuild your dkms drivers including the one for VirtualBox. Then run MX Tools -> MX Boot Options and select that kernel as the default and click Apply. Reboot and VirtualBox and your guest OS should work now. (Unless that PPA broke it.)

  yesss, it worked. So many thanks to you folks. It's great to see how good the support is if you run in a problem as a not experienced user.

You're the best :number1:

That's not a PPA. When you install their .deb the source.list gets added. Much like what Goole does when you install Chrome or Google Earth etc. They have one download for Debian based systems.
