[SOLVED] mx19.2 live usb not running properly

I am trying to upgrade 18.3 to 19.2 have downloaded the 19.2 iso from a mirror, md5 checked it and used mx tool's live usb maker to create the usb.

When i boot the usb I get a screen which looks correct with option to boot 19.2 x64 dated 31-May-2020

However when clicked I end up with an empty desktop with background being the blue xfce mouse wallpaper and no icons or panels, if I right click I get a menu and I can open the desktop in thunar and see the install icon . If I click it, it runs and hangs. If I open a terminal and kill minstall and do sudo minstall in the terminal I can see it hanging after it has displayed the partitions on my system

any ideas please?

Sometimes trying another usb stick solves such weird issues.

Also, if there's such an option, can you change sata mode to Ahci in Bios? (Assuming you don't have Windows installed)

After you chose the option to preserve /home during installation, did you choose the option to save your old /home folder or partition under another name?

Or did you give yourself a different user name for your new installation?

It might also help the experts here if you post the contents of /var/log/minstall.log

there is something wrong. it sound like the xfdesktop isn't starting. and possibly xfce4-session as well.

you should get a live-usb working before bothering with the installer.

I believe you're on the Secondary Display! (the default XFCE Blue Mouse logo wallpaper is a clue)

Also, in your QSI Graphics info the resolution: 1366x768~60Hz, 1920x1080~60Hz would seem to indicate 2 displays are active.

The built-in laptop display is 1366x768-60Hz and the HDMI-ed TV is 1920x1080~60Hz.

You should really boot the live USB and install MX with only one display connected, then "hot connect" your second monitor and configure it after booting into the installed system.

By the way, pressing Super+P (Super = the "Windows key") will show a multimonitor configuration popup that will let you select only monitor 1, mirror the two displays, extend the desktop to the second display, or only monitor 2. Note that the Super key by itself will open the Whisker menu so it will open up too: just ignore it.

I have a laptop connected to a docking station with the lid almost permanently down, and a samsung 23'' connected to the docking station. You identified the problem correctly the full desktop of the live USB appeared on the laptop when I booted with the lid up. Clicking Install icon on that desktop worked :)

I had exactly the same problem on a system set up for two monitors but only one connected. MX saw the active monitor and automatically labeled it as monitor 2. I had to disable the #2 monitor to get the only monitor to be identified as monitor 1. It did not matter which video port I used - the result was the same. Problem now solved. THANKS!
