Pitivi issue / general video editing question

First, a little background. My wife and I write, record, and perform music in our spare time. One of things I'm trying to do is create lyric videos of some of our songs to post on our YouTube channel. I hit upon using Pitivi because it seems to allow me to superimpose lines of text over the top of images and/or video. (I looked briefly at Avidemux, Flowblade, LiVes, Openshot, and Shotcut, but none of them seemed able to do what I want. At least it was not intuitive to me.)

The problem I am running into - both with the version in the MX repos and the Flatpak - is that after a few edits and/or changes to the project, Pitivi locks up, and I can't do anything. I have to resort to xkill to close the application. I realize this isn't necessarily an MX problem, but I'm wondering if anyone else has either had the same problem or has had success doing something along the lines of what I am trying to achieve.

I'm also wondering whether I have enough computing power for what I want to do. I have an Acer Aspire TC-120 with 8gb RAM but integrated graphics. I generally close everything else except Libre Office (which contains the text I'm working from) when I'm editing, but Pitivi still locks up. I didn't find anything on the web that this was a known issue, so I'm wondering if my hardware is the problem. I'm also wondering whether MX is the right distro for what I want to do. I love it, and I don't want to go back to Windows, but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks to everyone in advance.

How about going the the menu and doing a 'Quick System Info'. It is formmated so all you need to do is pasted it here so we can see everything about your system.

You computer should be OK to do what you are doing. My computer has AMD A10-7850K Radeon R7 and I do not have any trouble.

You might try starting the program using the terminal to see if any error codes show there. I never used or tried Pitivi.

I take it you are just using it to added subtitles?

Aother program you might try is Aegisub. I never used it to make them but have used it to edit. Most of my editing is using a plain text editor and LibOffice does not work well.

I understand that Aegisub can make ones that scroll which might good for songs. Don't know the learning curve but if you do a lot of them it maybe worth learning it.

You could make your own with just plain text editor and a video player that shows the timings needed to enter in the file. After it's all done it is easy to add to the video, work most likely take less than a minute.

I'm using still photos (and potentially video clips down the line) and putting text over the top of the images/clips. Pitivi does it easily until it freezes. None of the other video editing applications I looked at seemed to make this easy to do.

I took a look at Aegisub (and do have it installed)> I suspect it might work (I know Avidemux can use it), but it seems like it will add to the length of time required to produce a lyric video because I have to know how long each line of text is meant to be displayed. I'm also not sure if it will allow me to have multiple lines displayed together (e.g., a clip come up with one line of text and, while that line remains displayed, a second line appears). If I could overlap titles (as they're called in most of the video apps I looked at), that would be ideal.

It may be that I end up creating individual "title cards" in GIMP and creating my "video" that way. On the other hand, my wife is using this to justify me buying a new computer. So who knows?

If you're willing to give Shotcut another try, you might find this useful...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qilTeu77oQ

There is a lot of help available online for Shotcut. You can easily run the latest version by downloading the AppImage from the website.

Also, LibreOffice might be using a lot of your memory. Geany or a simple text editor might work better if your list is just plain text.

I thought about that, but Pitivi did still freeze even with everything else, including LibreOffice, closed. I'll take another look at Shotcut. I'd liked what I saw aside from not being able to do (or figure out how to do) what I want to do.

I am doing some video editing. When was looking for appropriate software I went through 10 of them and finally stick to Olive for 2 main reasons:

1. Stability. Although developers call it to be in alpha stage, it is still more stable than Kdenlive which was my private number two.
2. Ease of use. I recommend to start with a couple of video tutorials on YouTube to learn its philosophy.

Ease of use also applies to the text editing which you are looking for.

Which version of Olive?
The 2020010-1-mx19+1 from the stable and test repo, the 0.1.2 flatpak from the MXPI or the current Appimage Olive-031c07f5-x86_64. from github? All of them had their annoying quirks, e.g. missing language support, the version that offered German often crashed while rendering, on one of them I could set the export settings as I wanted, the quality was poor.

Pitivi runs without problems here, as well as kdenlive, openshot and shotcut.

I am working on version installed from test repo however I needed to tick the option to install all necessary files. Otherwise there was an issue with GUI of the program.

I will compare the quality of the output files and come back to confirm.

Regarding the quality of output video - did you play with the quality value?
The default setting of 36 is giving really low quality. 17-18 is fair enough.

Shotcut looks like it might do what I want. I haven't tried the text function yet, but I do seem to have more control over how long each shot is up.

The application did crash on me once, but it has yet to freeze up on me. (I'm running the Flatpak available through the MX Package Installer. Don't know if it's the same version as the Appimage on the website.) There is more of a learning curve with Shotcut, but it does seem that there is also more help available.

EDIT: It is the same version as is on the website.

Shotcut is looking more like the way to go. The website has a lot more help and tutorials that I saw with Pitivi. I do worry, though, that my 8gb of RAM is borderline for what I'm doing now and might want to do in the future. My options seem to be to get a new machine (the one in my price range also has 8gb RAM but has a dedicated video card with another 8gb RAM, which I currently do not have), buy and install a video card (which I've never done and it's been quite a while since I've installed anything on a computer), or add more RAM (which was the last thing I did on this machine built in 2014 when I doubled the RAM from 4 to 8gb). Money aside, which might be the better option? Thanks.

The MystiQ app in our test repo makes it really easy to "burn" srt subtitle files into an existing video file, too. That way they become a permanent part of the video.

Olive from the test repo has a. no working language selection and b. crashed while importing an .mp4.
The version that was switchable to German, it did not matter which CRF value I entered, the output always looked like the default value. Furthermore the choice and fine tuning of the decoder is very limited, e.g. there is only constant bitrate, I prefer VBR and so on

@WaltH : Even with all sorts of programs loaded, I've rarely used more that 4GB of RAM when running Shotcut or anything else. And I do all my work in RAM (with /tmp as a tmpfs) and only copy to my external drive once I've completed what I'm working on. So it might be that 8GB will be enough for you, though more RAM is almost always better. Of course, that would depend on what you're rendering.

I suggest downloading and trying the AppImage from the Shotcut website if you have another crash. Having all the program dependencies included in a single file might reduce the likelihood of that happening. Plus, the AppImage is always the latest version.

I think you'll find Shotcut quite nice to work with. I am not a seasoned video editor, but with the available help online am finding it rather easy to pick up. Here's the go-to list I use:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... cCGCuqRg_5 - Mr. Eko
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... jU92Nuewz- - James Woo
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... PKqr0GOTY6 - James Woo
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... gxIYqMAG1s - Tux Designer
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... -AIAAweDHh - Tj Free

Everything in only ten minutes (nevermind that he keeps calling it ShoRtcut):

The Flatpak available through the MX Package Installer is the same version, and don't those Flatpaks usually include all program dependencies, or am I missing something here?

I spoke too soon in marking this solved. Shotcut also locked up on me in full screen mode when i tried to add some text to a video I'm working on. Nothing else was open. I'll try in regular mode (not full screen, that is) to see if it still freezes.

Shotcut has now frozen up and crashed on me (it is the latest version). Pitivi repeatedly locked up on me. So I'm wondering what to do to maximize video processing performance on this machine. I thought I saw somewhere how some kernels are optimized for different tasks, including video processing. What installing a different kernel help in my case? I'm not running any other applications (knowingly - except Conky in the background).

I'm trying to produce 16:9 HD (1080p) lyric videos of our music (with images, music, and text) for uploading to our YouTube channel, which may be beyond the capabilities of this machine. At the moment, it at least seems to be beyond me.

I haven't had that problem, so it *might* be a hardware issue. Is there anything in the log file that might give a clue as to what happened?

I see the "RGB color space not permitted on grayscale PNG," but I'm not using any grayscale or PNG graphics at this point. Nor do I see a separate QtQml,Models file. FWIW.

So the machine isn't even working hard when it freezes? There goes the overheating theory.

Can you run memtest from a LiveUSB to see if it finds any RAM issues?

I could try, though I'm not sure of the process for doing so.

I rebooted and ran memtest86+ (v. 5.01, as I recall) from the GRUB menu. It found no errors, for whatever that's worth.

I know you are wanting to find what's wrong with your computer when it comes to video editing. If you have your video made and just want to add the subtitles to it, you may find this interesting till you find out whats wrong. I was going to write something up but decided to see if I could find a link the would be better.

https://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/cre ... subtitles/

There is even a way to use YouTube to do it.

If you did make your own with a text editor, it is easy to put them together using ffmpeg. I can give you the commands if you need them.

Appreciate it. I don't have the video completed. I started it and then tried to add a line or two of text (in part to get a better feel for the timings), which is when Shotcut crashed. I'll take a look at the link. Thanks.
