Steam games crahsing

#1 Post by Dangbert »

i have played the Linux version of Steam OS games, primarily Civilization V, before and it ran fine, but I think I was running Mint at the time. When I try to run them under MX they load fine, but will crash after a few minutes. This is on both my systems (32bit with AMD FX Nvidia 390and 16gig of memory) (64bit with AMD Rizen 5, Nvidia 710 and 16gig of memory). Any helpful hints?

I have found the cure for the problem, but you will not like it. Load a copy of Mint. I did and it works great. Still have MX on my primary machine, but Mint on the backup. I played Civilization V for about four hours and nary a hiccup. Best I could do on MX was 30min to it dropping out of the program.

Thought you might want to know.

BTW, the backup machine has the motherboard, video card and CPU that was in my primary. So, its not the hardware.

Seems to work fine for me on MX, can you post your Quick System Info (QSI).

I can go back and look at your other threads about your issues, it was mostly you had problems installing Steam and installing Nvidia drivers correct?

No, Steam would install fine. The games loaded and started with no problems. About 5-30min into game play it would simply exit. No lock ups or anything else, it just closed.

Fortunately, I can still send the requested information, because I did not over write either MX installation, 32 and 64 bit. To make life easy for me give me the Command Line for QSI.

Perhaps you may find some helpful information in one of the logs in
~/.steam/steam/logs/
and/or
~/.xession-errors

Is this the same install from (from your other thread) when you had the Test Repo manually enabled for a bit?

Is there a reason these were enabled?

Code: Select all

           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list
           3: deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster non-free contrib main
           4: deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ buster-backports non-free contrib main
           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/steam.list
           1: deb [arch=amd64,i386] http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ precise steam
           2: deb-src [arch=amd64,i386] http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/ precise steam
You should not need any of these or packages from them unless for some reason you are doing a lot more than just trying to do normal day to day things and play Steam games.

Please understand that it becomes very hard to troubleshoot and help when there is a chance that a system is not configured or running even close to a normal MX install.

I did a normal install of MX. I then logged onto Steam Powered and logged on and did the necessary install of the app. What you are saying is to log on, get the app and then install Steam from the repository. So, I should delete the Steam folders in User and USR, grab the files from the repository and everything should be fine. What about the fact that Steam updates every time you log on?

As an item of curiosity, why did you set up MX this way? Mint does not seem to care.

Thanks
