Its been years but I would like to do some searches for a P2P music sharing program like the old Frostwire application I used to use in Puppy linux. It appears there are not many P2P music search and download applications left but to spare the frustrations....

What would be an easy to install, safe, P2P music download application for Mx19?

Just new to this Mx19 install and I like it.

Keep in mind the paucity of well-advertised programs of this type has something to do with the legality of particular uses of them post-Napster ruling. The programs have many non-infringing uses but you are responsible for what you do with them.

Frostwire was essentially a bittorrent program with some convenience features.
There are several bittorrent programs in the repositories including Qbittorrent & Transmission.
Azureus/Vuze was a popular one similar to Frostwire that has been discontinued but some of its original developers are offering BiglyBT which, although not in the repos, might be worth looking at.

The "nicotine" package in the stable repo is a GUI front-end for the Soulseek p2p music sharing platform. That's what I used to use back in the day. It lets you search, queue, add to a wishlist, etc.

OK, let's just ignore the ethical problems of downloading music without paying for it.

I know that QMPlay 2 lets you download just the audio section of Youtube music videos, as do many other Youtube download applications. It also has a MediaBrowser widget that will let you search for, play, and download files from MyFreeMP3. It is direct downloading, not P2P, so avoids problems where P2P is blocked, slowed, or tracked.

I can think of some legal use cases for P2P music sharing. One, many indie artists distribute their music that way. Two, some bands have given express permission and even encourage fans to share their music. I'm not sure but I think the Grateful Dead and Insane Clown Posse are two examples. Three, ISTR that the US courts ruled that it's legal to obtain copies of songs for which you already bought the CDs or LPs in other formats to play on different devices such as portable mp3 players (but I'm not 100% positive about this as the ruling took place many years ago when portable mp3 players were becoming popular and the recording industry was raising a fuss about them, just as they did when CD burners became available.) YMMV if you live in a different country.

OK...Thanks for the info. Have down loaded and installed without difficulty... But now I gotta get it working... I'll leave notes here of my progress...

Oddly enough I am down loading my vast collection of literally trashed vinyls I purchased way back in the day. Good Grief if I had only taken care of my music. I shiver when I remember we used to stack them three or four high on our multi music console... And then clean the needle by rubbing a thumb over it... Ha

I never invested in 8 tracks. They don't do well in Texas heat. My cassettes are in almost as bad a shape as my vinyl. At least I still have the album covers. I stored them after I took them off the walls in 74.

Welcome. Please start new topics in the appropriate areas rather than bumping others' inactive ones.

99% of questions such as this one are already answered in the manual and/or the wiki, faq and other documentation. But the answer is use MX Package Installer and don't manually enable or disable any repositories yourself, or add foreign repositories or PPAs, unless you want to break your installation and reinstall

I appreciate the answer. I saw that I posted in the wrong place. But because of your response, when a package is not in the repositories, is it possible to suggest its inclusion in MX?

To request new or updated software packages be added to the MX Repositories, please read these instructions. then post your request in the appropriate Package Requests/Status subforum for your version of MX: 19, 17/18 or 15/16.

I tested nicotine-plus from the MX-19 repository. But SoulseekQt-2016-1-17-32bit.tgz, shows more files and can download faster.

That version of Nicotine+ is very old, it seems the .deb package is no longer updated on the Debian repo.

Nicotine-plus 3.1.1 is vastly improved now, but it is a shame that an up-to-date .deb is not available for it.
