(solved) MX19.1: printing problems with printer Kyocera Mita FS 1010

#1 Post by waldmattis »

Good evening.
One of my friends wants to run a Kyocera Mita FS 1010 under MX19.1, 64bit.
The printer is connected via USB.

MX printer configuration recognizes the printer correctly as a PostScript printer, Kyocera's official PPD is set up.

Some printouts work, others have reproducible errors.
Google finds many users who report similar problems.
The best printing results under Linux and also Windows probably give drivers for
- Laserjet 4
- PCL5
- PCL6

How can I install these printer drivers for the friend "by hand" in MX Printer Configuration's add printer dialog?

Thank you to all!
Greetings
Karl

That series from Kyocera does use the HP Laserjet engine as a base for its operations, but a manufacturer provided ppd should be better than anything else by a country mile because a ppd is not distro or version specific and it should contain everything necessary to give perfect prints every time.

However, if you want to try a HP driver, simply re-add the printer, or change the driver for the existing one already installed. You do this by "driving" the driver selection to use the HP driver driver instead of its own. The worst you will get is a mass of pages with 1 or 2 lines of garbage, printer language the device partially understands, but can't paginate the data. I've never has any issues with Kyocera drivers, they are fantastic and drop dead simple little printers, but they can choke on heavy a 600dpi half or full page graphic if it's sent to them, unless they've had a memory upgrade.

@m_pav
Thanks for the quick response.
Under MX18, 64bit, the printouts worked perfectly.
After switching to MX19.1, 64bit, the printouts only partially work, although the same printer driver with the same PPD is selected in the printer dialog.

Since the printer is not automatically recognized by the printer dialog as LJ4 or PCL5/6 printer, I must probably enter the suitable source by hand in the printer dialog.
But where do I find it?
(See attached screenshot)

Thank you!
Karl

Try using the CUPS web based printer admin tool built into your machine. We used to have this in the MX menu but it caused some confusion, so it was removed.

Open a new tab in your browser and type the following
localhost:631
This will open the page inside your web browser and you'll see a CUPS configuration home page.
CUPS will prompt you for a username and password, you can use the same as your regular MX login account, there is no need to be root.

Find you printer in the Printers menu, click it then click the Administraton drop-down and select modify printer, accept the defaults on the next page, continue button then you should be presented with an option to re-use the existing driver or choose another one.

As a practice, you might want to first add the CUPS PDF Printer so you can get a handle on each step before you make any changes to your Kyocera. This is done by choosing the administration menu, then the Add Printer option.

If it all goes pear shaped, just delete all and do it again. You'll get it right soon enough.

Here's a screen snapshot to give you a hint of what a configured printer looks like. Note, my Brother HL2270DW is using the HL2250 driver.

Good evening, m_pav.
I apologize for the delay in getting back to you.
I had caught a cold - not a Corona!

Thank you for your support, which helped me to solve my friend's printer problem.

I hope you don't have any problems with Corona at home either.
Here in Germany especially the media are going crazy:
In Germany there are officially more than 300 deaths every day due to tobacco consumption.
Now in two months we have 6 deaths from Corona.
Where is the hysteria about that tobacco?

Well, thank you very much and good health
Karl
