I just posted this poll on another Forum I frequent. I hope folks here will find this fun and perhaps even informative.

I voted tweak the desktop a little. But I am probably in between that and the heavily customize.
I change and edit the conky for example and install >100 packages on a new install etc.
It takes about an hour for a fresh install to a comfortable instance of MX-19.

Could not decide whether a little or heavily better suited what I do so voted a little.
I do more uninstalling than installing of packages though.

the type that doesnt call it that, unless referring to the kernel. why? because torvalds sold us out, and thats bad for freedom. its not about credit, its about supporting the right cause.
"I like to build my setup using others work as a point of departure and/or guide."
i was actually quite happy with debian lxde (one of the mainstream isos debian offered) practically as-is, before they destroyed it. theres nothing left in hundreds of distros that im happy using without rebuilding it. i didnt change; my options did, and they expected me to conform to what they wanted-- needs and all! not unlike the vendor i took up gnu/linux to get away from.

I guess I customize my Linux heavily.
I change fonts and icons to some rather bizarre ones.
Right now I'm using Nemo as my Linux file manager, Terminator as my Linux terminal.
I don't know, though, if stuff like that is considered a heavy amount of change in Linux.
I do know I'm hooked on Linux, and will forever use Linux.

I responded with "I like to build my setup using others work as a point of departure and/or guide", but that doesn't truly fit.
I'm a tool-man through and through, totally disinterested in flashy looks, more interested in performance, quality and usefulness. To better understand me, you have to know, I think a garage is not a garage unless it had a very large workbench, a tool chest, tool cupboards, a concrete floor and lighting that could illuminate Mars (hyperbole) I'm similar in approach with my computers, so the first thing I do with any new release is remaster it (snapshot) to add the toolkit I desire on my bootable USB thumb drive so I have in essence, a tool trucks worth of tools in my pocket.

I voted "tweak a little". A fresh install is "ready to go" after I have moved the panel to the top, reversed the order of the icons on the panel, deleted a few things from the panel, changed the background, and changed/edited the conky.

I heavily customize my environment(s) to suit my needs.

I would like to see some of the "tweaks" listed and how to do them.
I use compiz (thanks to Stevo) to do some of my tweaks.
Like using Wobbly windows and some other features.
I also use Variety to change desktop background.
I download themes once in a while to try some other window manager setting and colors.

I voted for change little, but I change a little at time. The more I learn from others and the changes they made the more changes I make. Then again I've made changes and hated them and changed them back. That is why I think Linux is the best operating system, no one dictates what you do to your system.
