Posted on Facebook. Cool animation of DistroWatch's HPD over the last almost 20 years, so a good index of curiosity and interest in MX.

It moves so fast it's easy to miss it.

Definitely meteoric. The botnet comment was hilarious. Some people just can't believe what a superior effort can achieve. And maybe a bit of good timing. Thanks for replying.

don't feed the trolls!
personally when folks mention the bot net, I say something like ..."that reminds me, time to feed the bots".

Distrowatch rank != popularity

It might, depending on how one defines popularity. Something seems to be generating a lot of page hits, and it isn't me. Is there a theory?

Lol, Jerry's comment was pretty much like:
"Ain't nobody got no time to herd no bots around here.... Bye, Felicia"

Ubuntu did pretty much the same thing in 2004--but they mailed anyone a free CD upon request, too. Plus they were good for beginners.

Did anyone else notice the short sprint Mepis had half way up the list?

Mepis (or MEPIS as Warren insisted to call it) was pretty much on top till Ubuntu popped up and Warren started to have health and I guess financial problems that made him look for full time employment and had to give up the OS.
MEPIS was pretty much the first pure LiveCD with a great installer, at that time I think there were some like Knoppix but that didn't have an installer (or not an easy one) that I think inspired Warren, Kanotix was also a similar project but Ubuntu kind of stole the thunder by power of marketing -- it was actually very crappy at the beginning (some says still is) and offered only Gnome environment that didn't interest me but marketing smoothed things out for most of the people -- that before Shuttleworth focused on all kind of different things other than Desktop.

Kanotix still exists if this is the distro you'\re talking about and not a different one with the same name:

Kanotix's installer is pretty good. You can choose to automount various other existing partitions during installation, ie, fstab is edited accordingly.

I'm talking about way back 15-16 years ago...

Ubuntu's rise was also quite sudden back in 2004-2005, but the commenter didn't ascribe that to cheating for some reason.
