I used a 22" 1080p Samsung monitor for more than 10 years after which it went dead.
Now since I am short in cash I purchased a 18.5" 720p Acer monitor.

What is your monitor's brand and resolution ?

Currently I have and use a Samsung Syncmaster 720N 17" LCD 1280x1020 "square" monitor that's surplus from a closed-down call center in S. Korea. I also have a Philips 720p 19" widescreen that, like you, I used for around 10 years having bought it new after playful puppies managed to knock my old LCD flatscreen monitor onto the floor and destroy it. IThe Philips still works but I accidentally caused a lot of compression damage to the display while cleaning it a year or two ago. I just couldn't take the eyestrain of having a cloudy-looking screen anymore, especially at night and when watching movies, and had to get something else, and again like you I was short of cash and had to buy what I could afford.

The monitor I want is a 1080p 20 to 22 inch widescreen, no brand preference, with LED/TFT, low power consumption and a sturdy stand (many I've seen look as though they'd tip over easily), but that has to wait until the shrimp boat comes in. The one I have is actually a very nice monitor, considering.

I only have a laptop at the moment (14" 1080p) but if I was to get a monitor I wouldn't bother with LCDs or even OLEDs:

CRT ftw!

22" LG TV-Monitor and AOC 19" monitor, both 720p. First goes through HDMI, second through VGA. I like how I can sit further away from the screen than when I had a 15" laptop, and I don't see the need for anything above 1080p in this size. Depending on where I live and/or work when I have the money to do so, I'll change my setup from side-by-side, to a bigger above and further away than my 22". I think anything more than 32" will do.

A friend of mine gave me a laptop with a messed up screen. Enter a VISIO 32" TV that the sound went out on. Happy encounter!

Daily system:
LG 27MU67 27" 3840 x 2160
Production system:
Sony 43X7000E 43" TV 3840 x 2160

I couldn't go back to HD or lower unless it was a laptop or 22" or less. With 4K one doesn't see pixels without a magnifying glass. It's glorious! ;)

1. How does this help you?
2. Isn't this kind of personal?
3. I'm sitting in front of an Acer something or other 27" (which I'm very happy with) "LED TECHNOLOGY" connected via DVI at 1920x1080 at refresh rate of 60. My laptop has 11.6" 1366 x 768 and it's functional.

I have a Dell UltraSharp 24 inch 16:10 IPS panel with 1920 x 1200 resolution.
I got that almost five years ago.
Before that, I used a Samsung SyncMaster 5:4 with 1280 x 1024 resolution.
Before that, I used a 17 inch eMachines CRT 1280 x 1024. It was part of a computer bundle from Circuit City in 2006.
That eMachines 17 inch was the best looking CRT I've seen. Unfortunately, they didn't make a 19" version.

I see a lot of people still use 4:3 monitors, both here and on the screenshots threads. Is this a choice, or have you managed to keep a monitor working for 10+ years?

In my case I accumulated several 4:3 flat screens years ago when we upgraded the store computers. We had CRT's and they wouldn't fit the space anymore. At that time 4:3 was the standard.

Then we upgraded again and now most screens at the store/office are 16:9 and I inherited the old 4:3 screens. I use them as second screens in my office and at home in my lab. But I also have some of the old CRT's which are a lot nicer to view in my opinion.

Also, when I see an old 4:3 flat screen in a thrift store for $5 I usually buy it. I've had a few go bad and then I pull from the inventory to replace the bad one. Or use them temporarily while purchasing a new 16:9 screen.

#1 Is still unanswered and I'm curious.
#2 Was humor -- levity; in the vein of "I'll show you mine if you show me yours."
I answered because I was able.

"1. How does this help you?"

I think it's like what car do you drive? Or what is your favorite wine? Etc. It's just friendly chat and not meant to be anything more than that.

And I get the humor of #2. But it's not always easy to decipher text on a page. Maybe a fun emoticon at the end? :p
