This little package (v. 0.0.3, has two separate files) supposedly enables assigning different wallpapers to different workspaces. It is from a loooong time ago, but appears to have been well put together. There is a later version (0.4.0) that we could look at if this first one can be packaged, works and proves useful.

Well, you don't usually need to compile or install a Python application--just "python something.py" does it most of the time.
