Install GRUB on USB stick

#1 Post by phil_n »

Hi all. Not sure where to go with this question so I'm trying here.

I have MX19, Mint and Win7 installed (on one machine - 19, Mint and Win10 on another) and will be trying out BSD (probably Nomad). Can I install the grub boot menu to an otherwise empty USB stick? This is so without the stick there would be no boot menu when booting up and the box would go straight to Win7 (10) and when I want to boot to any of the other installs I could insert the key and get the grub menu to boot one of the other OS's. I'm thinking I could run grub-update and/or install-grub in MX19 (it has the best looking grub splash/menu) but somehow tell it to install to the USB stick. (And, of course different sticks for different machines.)

Thanks.

ps I mostly use MX19 these days.

The USB key might work. Give it a try.

You know you can setup grub to boot to Windows by default and hide the menu. You can use a key combo to show the menu when you want to boot something else.
