Need Windows 7 look

#1 Post by Mr. Puto »

Hi.

I want to give my MX the Windows 7 look (like Aero+Glass). Identical if posible.

It's there any transformation pack that works? (I mean, that you have tested)

I tried to install a few of them I found but always end in a dead end of dependencies conflicts.

That is not something that would interest the MX Devs, but maybe someone in the Community can help you.

best bet is probably to install the KDE Plasma desktop on MX and then use a theme like this

https://store.kde.org/p/998651/

i haven't seen any xfce themes that are similar but have not looked very hard ... can't imagine the demand for a windows appearance is that great :lipsrsealed:

The newest release of Kali Linux has a theme made to look like the Windows 10 desktop and a script that can be used to switch to it and from that back to the regular one.
The current Kali DE is Xfce4
Not exactly what you are looking for but maybe you can get some ideas from it.

MX may not support this. Maybe a "spin" can help, as already mentioned.

FYI, I have installed Q4OS and it uses a KDE fork called Trinity. In that system they have skins that make your screen look exactly like windows, including Windows 7. Like MX, it is based on Debian stable.

I've just worked out a solution to make MX-19 look more "Redmondesque" as I call it. It will probably work with MX-18.3 too as it only involves theming. It still uses Xfce so your MX is still a medium-weight distro.

It has an Aero-like Light-DM Greeter theme during booting and logging in, a Windows 7-like Plymouth animated splash screen during boot, a Windows 7-like GTK theme, a Windows XP-like window manager theme (I couldn't find a Windows 7 one), some changes to the Whisker Menu settings to make it look closer to Win 7's menu, a mouse cursor theme that looks kind of like Aero, a wallpaper that looks kind of like Windows 7's, and some panel configuration changes that makes it look sort of like Windows' taskbar, or at least closer to it. The combination is so close to Windows 7 that it's kind of spooky.

Click here. (I posted it in Tips&Tricks.)

Back in january, as a personal tribute to Windows 7, I decided to play around with it and I got it a more modern and clean look imo. Here is how it looked like:

What I used:
  • Panel: The background I used to emulate the Windows Aero transparency can be found in this Dockbarx theme. If you use dockbarx (which I recommend you to do if you want to get your system more like Windows 7) you can also try the theme itself. I personally settled with dockbarx's default theme and found the buttons on shinybar a bit too big, but maybe so were the buttons on Windows 7 itself :D
  • GRUB & Plymouth: You can check them on JayM's post.
  • Start Button: check also JayM's post but use mx-icons-start-round.png
  • Wallpaper: One of the MX 16's wallpapers found under the popular apps tab in MXPI. It is installed in /usr/local/share/backgrounds/MXLinux/wallpaper/marguerite.jpg
I am a bit late, as I can see, but hopefully this can help others as well. Bear in mind that you're not using Windows anymore, but Linux, so you will eventually need to get accustomed with some of the different ways of doing things. Happy ricing and happy stay!
Acer Aspire One D260
Lately got a Lenovo V110-15ISK too

That can't be a windows clone. Not near enough icons on the desktop. Most of the windows users I know have an icon of every file and application they every had on their desktop. I don't think they are aware that there is a menu.
