[SOLVED] Live USB with Persist-All Problems - Wait for Next ISO?
[SOLVED] Live USB with Persist-All Problems - Wait for Next ISO?
I am trying to transition from Windows 7 to MX Linux, and have been looking for a simple way to get started. Although my Lenovo C30 is running Windows 7, the hard disk is GPT with an EFI System Partition. I was going to do an install of MX-19_November_x64.iso, but after viewing several videos which talked about issues installing with UEFI, I thought it might be better to start with a Live USB with Persist-all, until I get more familiar with Linux.
I started with a Live USB stick created with RUFUS 3.8. When I booted the stick, and used the Custom entries to set up Persist-all, errors occurred when it tried to make the root and home persistence. Next, I tried to boot into Linux and use MX Live USB Maker to create the stick. The resulting Live USB stick worked better when creating the root and home persistence, but got an error when creating the swap file. I was able to finish the bootup to MX Linux, and I was able to do the "Updates", and customize some applications, such as Firefox. I also installed a new password application. When I tried to restart MX-Linux, it hung up and didn't restart. I cycled PC power, and the Live USB stick booted, but hadn't saved all of the changes that I had made. The "Updates" did not appear to be saved, but my changes to Firefox were saved. The password application that I had installed was no longer there.
I found that the problems I encountered with the swap file creation and the hang on restart, were already listed in the forum, but the solutions seem a bit more complicated than I can handle at this point. I could take the plunge, and just do an install, but after my encounter with the Live USB bugs, I am even more worried about UEFI, GRUB, and other issues that could render my Lenovo unusable. I am thinking of just waiting for a while until these issues are fixed in an updated ISO. Any idea how long I may have to wait?
Thanks,
Ed

Re: Live USB with Persist-All Problems - Wait for Next ISO?
a while. FWIW, the problem doesn't crop up on all live systems, but enough that its an issue. at a minimum it will be the middle of december for the next snapshot iso.
all the fixes are in place thru updates except for the actual live part of the system, which is outside the usual update process. For now you run the repair script on live-usb's manually right now as the automatic version is not ready and may not be for a while.
the live repair script is here: viewtopic.php?p=541752#p541752
oh, there is one other way....you can install all updates, and run a snapshot of the existing running system into a new iso file. then build a new live-usb based on the snapshot iso you just created.

It's a bit off topic, but I think you can just try to install MX on real hardware instead of using Live USB. I also used to think that Linux had some problems with UEFI hardware but it was actually easier than you had imagined. Before doing this you should back up your important data first. I think if you have failed, you probably know how to reinstall Windows?ExL wrote: Sat Nov 30, 2019 11:44 am I am trying to transition from Windows 7 to MX Linux, and have been looking for a simple way to get started.

Re: Live USB with Persist-All Problems - Wait for Next ISO?
Thanks Dolphin_Oracle, for the speedy reply. I was wondering if just installing the updates would be enough to fix the Live USB Persist-all problem. You suggested saving a snapshot. I understand that MX Live USB Maker can also clone an existing system. Would that work, or would a snapshot be the preferred approach?
Thanks,
Ed

Do change to automatic - save on shut down within RemasterCC persistence save options. So it will not hang on shutdown and your changes are saved.

Oh yeah what fehlix said. What hangs is just the save dialog. If it doesn't t need to ask (with either static persistence or automatic saving) then no hang.
