i use protonmail and like it a lot. however - with linux i believe that imap is not possible unless you pay for it. i also believe that mac and win had that for free. weird given that the poeple apparently work at CERN and run linux and i believe debian. when i contacted them to use proton mail as imap as a tester they said you have to pay - to test? that was crazy. i hate web mail and rather go through thunderbird. THIS is the only downside to protonmail for me. also i would rather them not collect and for me to HAVE to give them mobile numbers etc to register. thannks anyone.

Tutanota mail is on my to-do list. Opensource, easy end to end encryption, was told it works in Linux, does uses it's own email client, if I understand correctly, because of encryption/privacy settings, 1GB free (double of Proton Mail)... can't tell you more, didn't set it up yet

ok thanks tutunota does not work imap - i checked multiple times unless i missed something. never heard of disroot - will check it out. thanks.

@winemaker setting up your own server is fairly trivial and only requires you have a domain name, assuming you self-host on a raspberrypi or old pc. You can have any type of mail you wan then smtp or imap. It's only don when you break it or your power is out.

i used to have domains and also hosting but since i stopped business i am done with that stuff. also way too dumb to start up a server on a machine unfortunately. thanks Mark! wish i could do it though. that would work nicely for my needs.

protonmail ahs been good - had one dns attack that lasted a few days nce and a couple of shorter times like minutes or an hr but pretty much uptime is good.

just hate webmail and always have.

It's not free, but Zoho mail claims that they give IMAP access on 5GB per user accounts (5 users - so 25GB?) for $1 a month. I haven't tried it, but plan to check out their free non-IMAP account one of these days to see how well it works and if it's worth the $1 a month. They claim to have good privacy protection.

And I think zoho still has a forevery free account but you have to use your browser, no pop or imap.

read y posts - i do not want webmail and also one of the 2 are charge even tthough they say free. spemt last evening searching 100 links. there is one says free and it is corporate at 228 or more a month or every 3 months.

Just want to "second" the suggestion for GMX Mail. I've been using that for years. I'm biased, but I love their web interface and their Android/iOS app is better IMHO than Outlook/Gmail/Yahoo, etc. You get a 50 MB attachment limit, spam filtering, unified mail (called Mail Collector) to import other accounts

They also provide free 2 GB of online storage (Up to 65 GB for paid service).

You might like it...

Maybe someone else needs to check on reading ability

gmx.com allows IMAP. I have over 5 accounts with GMX and use them with Claws email client. (Works with Thunberbird also) Your email would be my.name@gmx.com

Same with their sisters mail.com so your email would be: my.name@mail.com

You do have to first log in through web browser and enable IMAP/POP somewhere in the settings

While I'm happy user of gmx.com and mail.com, since this may be the same company, I was looking for some plan 'B' and 'C', just in case. I checked links posted in this thread and I found some interesting free email providers that support IMAP & POP.

I'm using gmx.com for over 10 years. It supports IMAP. I also appreciate their spam filters.
I use Claws mail but it works also with thunderbird.

If you really want "SAFE" mail, then you need email of which you're 100% in control. In other words, get away from any third party webmail which doesn't belong to you ... install Thunderbird on your computer ... set the server mail delete option to 24 hours ... and then have all of your email sitting strictly on a machine with a disk that you have control over.

All web based third party services either have control over what goes through them, or they have the potential for a total loss of control if their service gets hacked by someone with full access to that third party service. It simply boggles my mind how foolish people can be, thinking something that they're not in control of can be be safe & trusted. Hackers don't need to have an interest in you specifically if they're only interested in dumping the data that they achieved access too, to someoen else for financial gain. Security & Safety is first and foremost the responsibility of the individual, not any third party service which controls your data! I'm also happy with Disroot, use it for some years. They have a high privacy protection level and support IMAP and POP3.
In principle any mail client should support that, additionally you can use their webmail.

A pity they have some issues with Nextcloud now, but it has no effect on my mail performance.

just an update - this disroot which i was interested in is still down and had serious issues and registration is still closed. for what it is worth.

Hi there, just started using MX Linux after changing from Mint. Just to say that zoho does support pop/imap, I use it with Thunderbird. Also the zoho calendar uses caldav and so it can sync with Thunderbird and lightning.

Yes, I also use the Zone, probably one of the best options.

Caution about GMX mail: It's blacklisted by a whole bunch of companies and ISPs for being a well-known source of SPAM. Lots of sent mail bounces, and your inbox could become a gateway to all kinds of trouble. I really suggest a paid service like safemail or startmail, both of which work with T-bird and other email clients.

The day you posted you couldn't load their web page, that is was keep spinning, I tried and i got through without any problem and I registered. Did you check, if some anti script or add-blocking addon may be preventing loading their home page?

I did it using a Tor browser which means, IP was pointing somewhere who-knows-where. But that shouldn't matter.

well just wanted to say that after much hassle getting an account or two i have been trying it out and other than maybe 3 hassles getting connected to their server - which was somewhat brief for most events - minutes to maybe an hr it has ben quite nice. i still want to keep checking it for a few more months. i probably will still keep the proton accounts i have - but may transition a lot of my stuff over to the disrrot accounts. so thanks to the people who suggested it. other than the initial hassle and glitches they had at the time for signup and as i said, the other few glitches it has been good. so thank you!

Good luck. When I decided I had had enough of Gmail and chose to delete my account I had to specify another email account so a link could be sent. I was prepared to go through this but then Google kept sending spam to this account. UGGGGHHHH!

Disroot is not e2e encrypted. Protonmail is the leader in that field.

a bit late to the party, but here my notes:

1. Disroot ok but emails are stored in plain text on their server, also 2FA is only available on webmail but not with client. Not really secure.
2. Riseup, good, it offers aliases, but an invite is needed (PM if you wanna get one) and lacks 2FA
3. Autistici/Inventati, good as riseup (same political view, too), unlimited storage, 5 aliases, 2FA for everything.
4. Protonmail and Tutanota are reportedly the most secure providers but I do not use them because lack of IMAP support
5. Zoho is also very good as a standard email service.
6. YandexMail is great, if you trust the Russians.

Provided that I do not like Google and that I am never really 100% happy with any email services, I have ended up using icloud and outlook.com
