MX-19 Install

Hi, I'm new to Linux. This is my first install on a 4 year old HP laptop.
I've created a bootable version on a USB device using RUFUS. I can run from the USB device. I've tried installing 6 times using the installer on the desktop but when I attempt to run without the USB says:
Boot device not found.
Please install operating system on your hard drive.
I thought following the installer on the desktop would perform the install but it's not...do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for the help!

if secure boot is enabled in your UEFI/Bios settings, then disable it.

Thanks for the suggestion...I was able to disable the secure boot...I double checked that is was disabled...tried to perform the install again, same message boot device not found.
Suggestions?

Did you run the usb live before trying to install it?

ok, next question.
from the running live-usb, please post the output from our Quick-system-info tool.
if you have it, the /var/log/minstall.log file may be useful as well. this would get copied over to the installed system, so its probably present.
Also, please specify if you installed to UEFI/ESP or to mbr.
thank you.

Yes I ran it from the USB drive, then used the installation icon on the desktop.
There is no /var/log/minstall.log file, I seem to be running from the USB every time...
I install to MBR...
Here's the quick system tool...which finding this was at teh limit of my ability ;-)

well, there's the problem. your machine is set up to boot UEFI, but you are installing MBR. So there is a mismatch between how you are booting and what you want to boot.
That insyde UEFI setup utility can be tricky. I suggest checking to see if it can be set to boot "LEgacy first". if so, give that a try. elsewise try installing to the ESP, if you have one.

It would be very usefully to see what partitions are on the Hard Drive.
Running from the Live USB stick:
- Bring up a Terminal
- Enter sudo inxi -po
- Highlight the output with the "mouse"
- Copy to the clip board, Press CTRL-SHIFT-C (or Right-Click and chose Copy)
- Paste the results to forum
I think that the boot process is in UEFI mode and therefore ignoring the MBR.
Knowing the ESP (EFI System Partition) of the HD and partition holding the Linux Root FS,
you can run
MX Boot Repair:
- Chose Reinstall GRUB bootloader on ESP, MBR or PBR (root)
- Select Apply
- Install on: ESP
- Location: sdaX (where X is number 1..n)
- Select root location: sdaY (where Y is the partition with Linux Root FS)
Of course, this supposes that there is still an ESP on the HD.
(Once again, I see that while I was composing this post someone came along and swooped me.)
