This is the place to ask questions, raise issues and make (constructive) comments about MX-19 'patito feo'.

I have only recently started using MX linux and like it so much that I have put it on 4 laptops in the house. (this after a long time away from linux but finally reaching my wit's end with windows)... tried 4 or 5 other distros before stumbling on this one thanks to bigdaddy linux's distro challenge show.
Anyway ... given that MX 18 is working very well across the board, is there any need to upgrade at this stage?
I would prefer to wait til I start to break stuff (probably not long)
Each of my laptops had slightly different issues with set up ... 2 had wifi driver problems (AMD 8821CE)
and another had issues with freezing in every linux distro i tried.... this was finally resolved by adding idle=nomwait to the boot paramaters ... (AMD Ryzen3 2200u)
anyway ... i guess what i am saying is i don't want to do anything else ever again so is it ok to stick rather than twist?
sorry if this is not constructive feedback ...maybe it should be moved elsewhere
congrats on a brilliant distro and just watching you guys developing this stuff has been an education ... btw ... the torrent for MX 19 downloaded in about 90 seconds flat so i have it if needed.

Junoluna:

info in that link for you :)
You don't HAVE to go to 19, if you are happy on 18.3 by all means you can stick with that :)

Debian Stretch (MX17/18) is supported until 2022. You can keep using it for quite a while yet.
But when you do eventually wish to upgrade, I'm afraid you can't not "do anything else ever again...".
You'll certainly need to do a fresh install, but can choose to preserve /home from within the installer.
See the migration link in Eadwine Rose's post, for some advice on using aptik as well.

thanks asqwerth ... i suspected i was being slightly optimistic :)
when push comes to shove, i am sure i will manage, but it is an odd feeling to have everything working as it should ... long may it continue

Congratulations to MX team!!!
Just a splendid distro and a wonderful support forum with great geeks to assist us non-geeks!
- - - - -
btw, 18.3 Sept. still listed as latest - guess it takes a few hours for Sourceforge page to "re-load".

Congratulations to MX team!!!
FI: I have tried a:
Code: Select all
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade
... But it does not work yet here.
Edit; ah ok
https://mxlinux.org/migration/
From any version of MX-18 to MX-19
Because of the change in the base from Debian 9 (Stretch) to Debian 10 (Buster), and the switch to the new Xfce 4.14, there is no upgrade option. You will need to make a clean install.
