As long as I can achieve LUKS+LVM with XFS root filesystem easily enough, I'll be happy.

I generally use the Debian net install iso. I've done it so many times I don't even have to think about the steps to install at this point. But recently used the Live Xfce Debian iso with Calamares. Was a very fast install and quite simple to do. The biggest shock for me was no root password. I'm not used to Debian without a separate root and user password, so the first time I updated I used su and it said I didn't have permission, or something like that, until I realized I needed to use sudo like with Ubuntu.
It is definitely a good move for new users to Debian. Using the non-free iso version really makes Debian simple to use out of the box alongside Calamares installer.

Why? What does it offer what the current installer lacks?

the inability to install from persistence. /sarcasm
we looked at calamares in the 17 series because we were interested in the guided partitioning setup. But we were going to have to write a whole module to support our live system.
naturally we stuck with our installer.

The last time I looked at it, it also required loads of KDE 5 dependencies, which would have made our ISO at least a hundred MB larger for not much gain.

i found the article today and posted it for the devs and oithers; but not taking any sides as such. i am most pleased with everything i have seen with mx 18.3 and also tthe 19rc1 from todya's instal on 2 thinkpads. having run debian and also ubuntu based stuff this is my first time i guess not with systemd. and no not starting anything along those lines. Just stating that i am happy mx 's init/sysvinit or is it svsvinit? whatever. I am a happy camper as they say!
