Using dual displays - 2 issues

#1 Post by fishface »

Driver Nvidia 340.107

I use 2 Dell U2410 monitors with my Linux desktop, one in landscape and the other in portrait, and I have a couple of issues with this configuration.

First - issue, I usually have my monitors go into standby mode after 10mins, this has worked fine on this system for many distro's I have used over the years, after 10min the screen goes blank and the monitor goes into standby mode and the blue power LED blinks, under the screensaver settings I have tried various options but it fails to go into power standby, however, the screensaver does come on. Any ideas on how I might fix this?

Second issue - and I've had this issue with many distros, so not unique to mxlinux. When using the Nvidia configuration tool to set up my monitors it fails to save the config, I get the following message:

Code: Select all

You do not have adequate permission to open the existing X configuration file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for writing. You must be 'root' to modify the file.
So, I thought I had this fixed, I got my monitors setup just how I like, hit the "Save to X Configuration File", it then offers the option to preview the file, as root, I copied that preview file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (I backed the original up first), it copied fine, perms were all good, rebooted, and it still hadn't saved my landscape/portrait config correctly, the fonts were now extra large, so I reverted back to the original xorg file to get me back.

My workaround is this, every time I reboot my machine I have to go into the Nvidia X Server Configuration Tool and set everything again,if I then hit 'Quit' once I've got it set, this configures it but doesn't save it, hence I lose it on reboots.

BTW - loving MXLinux so far, it's a keeper.

Ok, this is weird, after rebooting the PC my monitors are now going into standby/powersave mode, which is awesome. Still have the no saving of the xorg config issue though.

Never a bad idea to back up your xorg config. To enable saving through the NVidia Server Config I simply launch it through the terminal with "sudo nvidia-settings". It's not the safest thing to do, but gives it the ability to write to the xorg configuration.

Thanks derrotmax, I'll give sudo nvidia-settings a try - I think I tried that, but get a warning about 'Truncate the MetaMode list? Long MetaMode string (greater than 900 characters) are not supported by the current X server'.....and a bunch more, I can either Truncate MetaModes or Write all MetaModes, so I'm wondering that if my MetaMode string is longer than 900 characters that might be the issue (is this a bug?), it warns you that if you try and write all the MetaModes X Server might fail.

I spoke to soon about the monitors going into power save, it worked the once, but now it's back to not going into power save, under screen saver settings I have the following:
Mode = Blank Screen
Blank After = 10mins
Cycle After = 10mins
Lock Screen After = 10mins and is enabled

Advanced
Display Power Management = Enabled
Standby After = 10mins
Suspend After = 10mins
Off After = 10mins
Quick Power-off in Blank Only Mode = Enabled
