MX 17/18 Repository: The Foliate Ebook Reader Thread

We now have the latest 1.4.0 release of the Foliate ebook reader in our test repository. OMGUbuntu has a pretty good writeup on it, which in fact brought it to my attention: https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2019/07/ins ... -on-ubuntu



It's an alternative to Coolreader, which may not be around after Debian gets rid of Qt 4.

Thank you! I have installed earlier Foliate 1.3.0 from Flatpak and it was ok. So now I've uninstalled 1.3.0 and installed 1.4.0 from MX Test (installation was ok).

In 1.4.0 as well as in 1.3.0 when I click on Close/Quit button in About Foliate window - it doesn't close the window that way.

Epub files are opening correctly. Everything works fine (searching through, changing fonts, theme, layout) - and really quick.

I can see that I can use all system fonts now (with Flatpak and 1.3.0 it wasn't possible) - great!

Foliate is really a wonderful piece of software - it's good to have it in MX Test repository.

I must spread the word now, that we have it, because it's worth it Great tool for readers.

I definitely must do some kind of tutorial about Foliate - I've just discovered a large amount of easy accessed and available dictionaries and possibility of Google translation - just with selecting and clicking words/sentences. Impressive!

Thanks for the feedback! It's kind of a pain to build, since it only succeeds on a bare-metal install, not in our usual chroot/schroot/virtual machine environments, so I'm glad to see it's worth it. I also just figured out why the MX 19 Buster bare-metal builds were failing, so am sending those packages up, too.

Maybe Debian will also package it and patch it so the builds succeed in virtual environments--I hope!

I can imagine now many applications of Foliate, not only for reading, but with such tools like easy/quick translations and dictionaries also for learning languages (this topic is my special area of interest - learning/teaching languages with (MX) Linux).

There are for examples notes, which can be marked with different colours (so, one can write down his own translation first and then check 'the answer' with Google Translate). Well, it is similar as in PDF readers, but Foliate works flawlessly and it is a pleasure to use it.

Actually, I don't know how to resize the note's window and change its font size - but maybe there are some config files.

i wanted to ask for it a few weeks ago, but i thought it would be difficult so i didn't. But eventually we have it.
foliate is very very good, very nice to have it in the test repo (i don't like flatpacks)

It might have been too difficult before 1.4.0, but the developer reduced the version of gjs needed to the 1.5.2 in Buster, and I was able to backport that because we already had a newer libglib2.0-0 we added to support the GIMP 2.10 builds.

I guess Foliate is actually a Javascript application, which is interesting, and makes it installable on all architectures that have the necessary dependencies. So you could install the MX 19 package on a Pi running on a Buster base, for example.

Is this package available? :) Actually I have working Raspberry Pi 1 with Raspbian Buster right next to me.

So is this package for MX 19 or MX 18.3? Is there a difference?

you could install the MX 19 package on a Pi running on a Buster base, for example.
