Audacious Media Player - outdated package (3 years old)

Hi all!
Is there any possibility that we can receive a
newer version of Audacious? This is my daily driver for playing mp3 / online radio streams and i recommend it to everyone. It is low on resources, works perfectly and integrates accordingly with XFCE.
https://audacious-media-player.org/
Current version is from 2016... :
3.7.2 - March 2016
Latest version is
3.10.1 -
December 2018
Best regards

That version's already in the MX Test repo. Use MX Package Installer and click on that tab and you'll find it.

Hi and thanks!
If i'm not too bold, can I ask why older packages like this are not updated in the Main Repo?
I mean the Audacious packages from Test seems to work just fine, in this case.

Usually there is a proper thread for each application that is backported or packaged for MX by the Packaging Team, found here:
viewforum.php?f=134
The packages are kept in MX Test Repo - in case of bugs or mistakes in packaging - until enough users report in the specific thread that the Test Repo package is working fine, after which it can be moved to main repo.
In the case of Audacious, I can't find a thread of its own.
Probably means no one ever reported that it was working well so it was never moved out of Test.

Thanks for the info.
Well... As I am the only user using Audacious, I guess it can be moved to Main repo :).
I didn't encounter any problem while using the test version.

I have a conventional Dell computer. I only tested the basic functions. Audacious 3.10-0.1~mx17+1 works well for me so far.

I've asked Tim to move it and audacious-plugins to main for MX 15-18.

Audacious 3.3 released
https://audacious-media-player.org/news ... 3-released
Audacious now saves the current position within a song when you start playing a different playlist. To resume from where you left off in a playlist, simply double-click on the tab for that playlist.
Various improvements have been made to the GTK+ interface, such as the addition of a genre column and the use of a slight gradient to make the info bar a little prettier. For users who find it annoying or want to save some CPU cycles, the visualization in the info bar can now be disabled. The playback toolbar is now styled as a “primary toolbar” so that it looks better in e.g. GNOME 3.
Several improvements have also been made to the search tool plugin. Searching is more intelligent, so that you can search by artist, album, and song title simultaneously, and more information is displayed about the search results. There is new keyboard shortcut (control Y) to activate the search tool within the GTK+ interface, and the escape key can be used to return the keyboard focus back to the playlist.
The core output code, which had become rather disorderly as new features were added, has been partially rewritten. One of the goals of the rewrite was to make it possible for effect plugins to vary the playback speed without restarting playback; there is a new “speed and pitch” plugin (replacing SndStretch) that takes advantage of this capability.
Audio format conversions have been fixed so that bit-perfect playback is now possible for 16-bit and 24-bit audio files (as it already was for floating-point). In addition, the FileWriter plugin can now save 24-bit and floating-point .wav files.

I have used Audacious. But I never noticed if it was the latest version or not. Seems I didn't care. And this is often the case for me. I often prefer not to upgrade, unless I have a particular need. I use a lot of software older than 2016! If it does what I want I don't notice what year it was released.
Now, a question on the flip side. I'm fine with the Main repo having an updated version. But what if the updated version doesn't work as well for me as the old version? There is no repo named "archive" or "legacy" for older versions of software (or is there?) How do I keep an old version? Is this supported in the MX Package Installer somewhere? I can't see how that would work.

apt, aptitude, or Synaptic support installing the specific older version in Stretch.

You're right
I assumed that release 3.3 would be more recent than 3.10.1 - numbering schemes generally do a simple increment, and this would result in v3.9 moving on to v4. Audacious confused things by going from v3.9 to v3.10 - I didn't realise this.
I'll look at the date articles are posted next time to avoid wasted posts here.

I see this in other places too.. I believe the kernels do this. Mighty confusing so you're not alone

That's thrown me off too, especially when (in the instance of kernels in the stable repo) 4.14 through 4.20 are displayed before 4.9. I think that's the standard Unix sorting order. To get around that the 4.9 series of kernels would need a leading zero before the nine, but the kernel naming (numbering) convention doesn't do that.
