any character map applications in MX?

I wanted to type a certain French word with an accent, but as far as I know, I don't have a character map application. Does MX include one, and I've just never noticed it? If not, that's okay: I looked up what's available, and am going to try gucharmap (Gnome).

gucharmap 1.9.0.2-1 is in the stable repo. Just search for "charmap" in MX Package Installer.

You can also enable compose character in your keyboard settings and then follow traditional compose character key strokes to get the Latin-8 characters you desire for French, German, Polish, whatever.... see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GtkComposeTable

What I do is this:

As root go to /etc/default/keyboard, in the line

Code: Select all

XKBOPTIONS=
add

Code: Select all

compose:lwin,
In my case I wanted to use the left win key, so: lwin.

The line now looks like:

Code: Select all

XKBOPTIONS="compose:lwin,grp:alt_shift_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp_led:scroll"

You can then use your assigned compose key when you want special characters. If you would like, for instance, é

press compose key, let it go, then press e and ' and voilà: é

Works for everything:
ę (e and ,)
ã (a and ~)
¥ (y and =)
€ (e and =)

Found this here a long time ago and now it seems to not be there *scratches head*... anyway.. this works.

18.3 is going to include font-manager, which can show a character map as one of the features.

Is it maybe an idea to include (not right away, later versions maybe) what I posted above, and then somewhere in the prefs (maybe near the meta key) one can select the compose key?

Just a suggestion. :)

@Eadwine Rose you can also do this, without need of modifying system files

Code: Select all

setxkbmap -option compose:lwin
or also

Code: Select all

setxkbmap -option -option compose:lwin,grp:alt_shift_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp_led:scroll
It could be put in ~/.profile (or in the autostart commands of XFCE)

From terminal it works.

Most distros (I have used) leave the compose unset because tiling window managers make heavy use of keybindings and... lwin for example is the Super key used as the primary activator for crucial actions. (See you picked an important key! ) I personally use R-alt because it is rarely used for other purposes (so say I... & don't believe me).

As a long time xfce guy trying to learn tiling windows (bspwm). And full disclosure time. I have had to change a lot of key board constructs to make things work both on my pcs and in my head. Anyway that's all just a long song of woe to say, it is hard to find the right key for 'most' people. Setting the key is really quite easy and we'll 'probably get less grumbling here if we let users pick their own. :needcoffee:

Yeah.. it is why I chose that key. I use it for nothing, and it was such a sad little key... sitting there all shiny while the rest got worn ;)

"From terminal it works."
So I would have to do this every time I log in. Ehh.. nope. It's nice, but I'd rather do it my way and have things set up from the getgo without fiddling

Come to think of it, it MIGHT be possible to put this in session and startup though, that would do the same thing, but.. to each their own solution.

For people who like to type lots of esoteric things they can also enter the ascii character code each time. "10" characters typed and one character appears. Well the wrong one would appear for me. :lipsrsealed: As you will note from the following helpful Windows Office Guide there's nothing to it.

Character map.. I remember back when in Mepis which was running on KDE I had kcharmap installed and hanging in the top of the screen. Now that was nice :) Just point and click what you wanted.

I think things like that are still around. My problem is I use diacritical marks in German, French and Polish. I am so lucky (ich bin so glücklich, je suis très chanceux, Jestem taki szczęśliwy). :footinmouth:

I tried to find that actually back when.. no luck then.

When I found this modkeymajiggie I was very happy about it and stuck with it.

by the way here is a tip. At keyboard layout, if you choose (using the gui of course) the option of English (international AltGr dead keys) and not the default option, then you will have additional characters if you press AltGr (this is the right alt key).
try it... ❤

Yes that would be uncomfortable, but you can put it in a start script (~/.profile? ~/.xinitrc? I don't know which one is loaded at session login).
Personally I like keep this kind of custom settings in a user file, so that I know it's not default, and if I must reinstall I just copy the settings file.

Well... I did use that short command just earlier because for some reason things decided to stop working on this boot. And instead of rebooting I just used your command and hoppaaaaa. Sooo thanks

How do you use it then, because I just started the thing and don't find how to make special characters like é and such with it.

It doesn't actually help with that problem very well @Eadwine.

If you select Latin in the left pane you can find the character you want in the right pane. Double click on it and it appears in the test to copy pane so you can copy & paste it in.

This is OK for wingdings, but it's obviously better to set up the Compose key and learn the syntax for it if you're going to do more than just paste a special character occasionally.

Yes indeed. By far not as handy as the point and click that kcharmap was.

I think you might mean kcharselect. I've used that and/or gucharmap in the past. Both are available from the Debian repos. These days, I simply use an online character map -- there are a few out there -- but I don't need to use one all that often.

The line now looks like:

Well.. what I did above apparently won't work anymore. I have no idea why this is, but I do not have the ability to insert special characters with lwin anymore with this line there (even tried rwin to see if lwin conflicts, no difference). I want to look for the solution to get this running automatically again. If not there then another way.

mg979 wrote: Sun Jul 21, 2019 6:48 am @Eadwine Rose you can also do this, without need of modifying system files

setxkbmap -option compose:lwin
This works perfectly in a terminal once logged in, yes

or also

It could be put in ~/.profile (or in the autostart commands of XFCE)
In ~/.profile, where would one put the line, and is there no more tinkering with formatting needed?

Content of my file:

Code: Select all

# ~/.profile: executed by the command interpreter for login shells.
# This file is not read by bash(1), if ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bash_login
# exists.
# see /usr/share/doc/bash/examples/startup-files for examples.
# the files are located in the bash-doc package.

# the default umask is set in /etc/profile; for setting the umask
# for ssh logins, install and configure the libpam-umask package.
#umask 022

# if running bash
if [ -n "$BASH_VERSION" ]; then
    # include .bashrc if it exists
    if [ -f "$HOME/.bashrc" ]; then
	. "$HOME/.bashrc"
    fi
fi

# set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
if [ -d "$HOME/bin" ] ; then
    PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
fi

(or in the autostart commands of XFCE)]
Where would this be located? I do know about session and startup, appliction autostart. Do you mean put

Code: Select all

setxkbmap -option -option compose:lwin,grp:alt_shift_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp_led:scroll
in there as a new entry? I know how to do that, just wondering is that is where you meant.

I thought that in XFCE you could add an entry in xfce4-session-settings with
this as command:

Code: Select all

setxkbmap -option -option compose:lwin,grp:alt_shift_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp,grp_led:scroll
But it doesn't work for me (maybe because XFCE loads setxkbmap on its own and
overwrites this setting).

So I don't know how to do it in XFCE at startup (I mostly use i3wm by the way,
where I can add such a thing in the config file).

If you use the terminal a lot you could put it in .bashrc, there it would be
loaded for sure (but maybe only after you open a terminal).

The above bit that is in code tags in session and startup as an entry works! :number1:
