Using Claws Mail , don't miss Thundebird. HTML emails if needed I do view in dillo.
So as @GuiGuy , I also do recommend ClawsMail , fast small, foot-print. Extrem good "learning" spam/junk filter, after short "training" period most junk goes automatically into Junk-folder to be quicky reviewed later for deletion.

This article provides a very brief overview of nine email clients.
I recently switched from TB to Evolution (in stable repo). Setting up my 2 gmail and 2 yahoo accounts was easy. Seems to be working OK so far.

I quite like Claws Mail although a major annoyance is the inability to write HTML email, all because of some ridiculous dogmatic nonsense on the developers' part (they won't even accept patches for such a fix the last time I heard). I'm no fan of HTML mail myself (especially the corporate messages that take up 500KB just to say hello), but occasionally I have to write it in response to someone elses' messages, the least they could let me do is write it in the form of HTML tags with the right MIME type. Otherwise it's a very good client and I've been using it for almost 10 years.

If anyone trying Claws Mail finds it too plain for their taste, they should have a look at the plugins available.

Admittedly, as AK-47 says, sending html is not available

Can any of these auto-start when I log in, run in the background and notify me of new email via the Notification Area in the panel?

I autostart T'bird and evolution with no problem. I think almost anything placed by its application name placed in 'autostart' ought to work.
I personally have such large email archives/ files (7+GB) that the only mail that really works are the 2 mentioned above. I've tried everything else and 'nada'...
