[SOLVED] Sound volume at 100% still low

antiX version 17.2-64bit-Full.
When I slide the volume to 100%, the sound is still less loud than what is was on Windows. Is this normal, or is there a tweak I can implement?
Also, is it possible that at boot up it is at the same level as where it was left at when the computer was shut down?

Control centre > Session > User session desktop > Toggle to desktop-session.conf file and change the % in this line to whatever you wish:
STARTUP_SOUND_LEVEL="25%"
Again, a reboot or logout is probably needed for it to take effect

On my antiX17.3 Control Centre > Session > User Desktop-Session = startup.conf
/home/koo/.desktop-session = desktop-session.conf This is the file with volume startup = 25%
Code: Select all
#Default Sound Level
#Set the sound volume level when starting up to default level when startup sound is true
#Set using amixer sset 'Master' -M
#Level is set from 0% - 100%
STARTUP_SOUND_LEVEL="25%"
This is where one my config's is located /etc/skel/.desktop-session = desktop-session.conf (This is not the file you are referring to ether)

Yes, that works, KoO had me confused.
I also found the PulseVolume.... app where that could be changed, which I did before I got your answer. Strangely I cannot find it anymore.

@KoO, you can websearch "debian /etc/skel" to learn additional details
TL;DR
The /etc/skel directory contains files and directories which are automatically copied into to a new user's home directory
when a user account is created via the
adduser program.

lol Sorry I never realised that >user session desktop< opens everything in that folder at once. I already had about a 10 files sitting in geany anyway.. My Bad
I'm just one of those users that like to edit in files straight from text editors like vim or geany, and use terminal base files explorers like ranger and desktop environments like i3. Been thinking lastly about moving away to forums that suit my needs more so than gui type forums..

I know how skel works. Thats another thing everyone in this house has their own computers so we are all single users.
You reminded me of something that was annoying me awhile back about the speaker icon in the taskbar or in my case the i3 bar, I kept trying to remove the icon from the bar. Only thing was it kept coming back. After sometimeee I relied I was editing the wrong file the one in system folder.
skel was tricking me with the folder it made in my ~ folder .desktop-session. Edited the startup file here and all was happy again.
#!/bin/bash
# Puts a volume icon on the taskbar
#volumeicon &
All the sound volume settings in taskbar and anywhere else around the desktop are useless to me as I run a usb sound dak in hardware with alsa. Volume sliders just can't turn that knob on the dak. Which is the way I like it .
Have a Good weekend..

The PulseAudio Volume Control was listed in the MENU, now it's not there anymore. How can I get to it?

I see PulseAudio is not installed, it is listed under the Package Installer as not installed. I am sure it was there before but I will now abandon this and install the package.

BTW, the alsamixer in the control center should have a "pre-amp" setting on the far right of the controls. you can use this to bump up the base sound volume.

Thanks for the tip. How do you bump up the level in the far right column? I clicked, double-clicked on the column, but nothing happens. Concerned that I might do something wrong, I left it at that.
BTW, I installed PulseAudio with the Package Installer, and what do I see afterwards? The installed app is also Alsamixer. In fact, what you refer to is Alsamixer Equaliser. I am still puzzled though, by the fact that what I originally used was Pulse Audio, called as such, with a totally different lay-out than Alsamixer. Mysteriously, PulseAudio disappeared subsequently.

No what I refer to is alsamixer. the equalizer is different.
Here are some screen shots for clarity. Use the arrow-keys to navigate and the up and down arrows to raise the levels. "M" is mute or unmute.
If you have pulseaudio installed, you may need to hit "F6" to select the hardware sound card rather than the pulseaudio virtual sound card that alsamixer will pick up by default if pulseaudio is installed.

When I click on the Alsa Mixer button as per your 1st screenshot, I get a black window with just 1 vertical bar, instead of 7. Because of this difference I have not activated F6.
Another point is that, when I look in the Package Installer, the PulseAudio check box is empty, even though I did install PulseAudio earlier on today. I am puzzled by this, I don't understand that aspect of antiX.
BTW, I clicked on the Youtube link in your signature.

the single bar is the master channel for the virtual pulseaudio sound card. you can select the underlying hardware card with the F6 button. you should then see the channels provided by your hardware, including the pre-amp setting.

What are the other controls for?

individual channels for headphones, surround sound, microphones, etc... all sorts of things. what's available depends on our hardware.

OK. I bumped the one on the far right up to max, which is 100%. Questions:
- In the PulseAudio window I had a couple of days ago there was ahorizontal slider which I put at 100% to, although the scale went up to 150%. Is there a possibility for that anywhere, or should I reinstall PulseAudio?
- Do you know why, after I installed Pulse Audio it does not appear in the main MENU anymore, and in the Package Installer the check box for PulseAudio is empty, even though I did not uninstall it - at this stage I don't even know how to uninstall something in antiX.
- On my keyboard I have 3 volume buttons: mute (@F1 key), diminish (@F2), increase (@F3), but antiX does not react when I press any of them, even if I use the Fn+F1 etc. Can this be fixed or do I have to accept adjusting the volume by clicking on the tray icon and moving the slider?

I don't know, but posting the output of
Code: Select all
apt-cache policy pulseaudio pavucontrol
will tell us a lot.

well, both pulseaudio and pavucontrol are installed, so I'm not sure why pavucontrol wouldn't be in the menu.
I figured pulseaudio was installed, since you had the single channel in alsamixer.

I don't know why pulseaudo volume control isn't in the menu, but the volume keys can be enabled by right clicking on the volume icon, going to preferences, and checking the boxes by the volume keys.

OK Dolphin Oracle, I think we have reached the end of the road on this subject. I just managed to activate the keyboard volume keys

Many thanks for your patience and persistence. We'll undoubtedly meet again in another thread. Cheers.

The only way I was able to get full sound volume from external speakers using antiX 19.3 (live-USB) was to install pulseaudio. This solved the problem, but there are unexpected consequences.
After installing pulseaudio and starting it with "pulsaudio --start" ("service start pulseaudio" does not work) I was able to raise the sound level with pavucontrol to a level comparable to MX or Windows. However, this disabled the volume control icon on the bottom panel.
Surprisingly, rebooting retains the elevated volume limit even without restarting pulseaudio. (ps -e showed that pulseaudio was not running.) Also, the panel volume control again works properly.
This suggests that pulseaudio is not needed, and running it just performs some configuration change in alsa. However, I don't see anything about sound level in /etc/asound and there is no ~/.asoundrc file. Maybe some alsa guru can find a simple fix without installing pulseaudio.
As an aside, on my 10-year-old Windows 7 machine used as an entertainment center, antiX not only boots faster than Windows (from a USB2 stick!) but also plays without interruption streams from sites (notably Metropolitan Opera and Vienna State Opera) that tend to freeze up in Windows using either Firefox or Chrome.
