Here is my new year's promise, said in tread: "Here comes 2019.... duck!"
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=47593&p=475283&hilit=2019#p475283
Fully upgraded (dist-upgrade) MX Gnome 3.30 buster respin, based on MX 18. Minimal Gnome install, no Nautilus but Thunar file manager and MX tools (Xfce is removed). One of the aim is/was to test Debian buster is stable enough, which seems doing well. The transition freeze of Debian 10 is planned on January 12, with Buster's soft-freeze scheduled for February 12.
KNOWN BUGS
1) MX tool icon launchers don't work. Run commands in terminal.
su-to-root -X -c mx-boot-options
su-to-root -X -c mx-snapshot
2) Gnome Software says: "Sorry, something went wrong", but does the install.
3) Extension "TopIcons Plus" shows number of new up-gradable packages, but does not do the upgrade. Use Synaptic "Mark All Upgrades".
GRUB:
After install, grub shows: "Debian GNU/Linux buster/sid" (originally MX-18 Continuum but changed by snapshot)
HINTS
* Install new extensions:

* List of popular extensions:

My favourite: "Workspaces to Dock".
* Change background and icons with Tweak (Appearance)

NOTE: In general, works well in my machine, hopefully for you also.

This bodes well for a future in-place upgrade to a Buster-based MX, too!
Downloading now to take a look at it.

Is that because GNOME doesn't display desktop icons, or because the /usr/share/applications/minstall.desktop file is missing? I haven't had time to boot it up in vbox yet...

I just checked..... in boot up with CD/USB the /usr/share/applications/minstall.desktop, is missing. After installing in hard drive, its there.

Install icon must be placed in /etc/skel/Desktop and /usr/local/share/live-files/files/etc/skel/Desktop. Last one only needed for MX-snapshot. /etc/skel/Desktop icon removed after an install and MX-snapshot copies the content of live-files on the right place before build squashfs.
The mx-installer icon in /usr/share/applications has a NoDesktop = true entry, so that this is not shown on a real install.

Thanks dphn, I will add the icon.
Found a missing feature, copy and paste doesn't work. Is this depending on a pkg?
EDIT
[Solved} Downgraded clipit to 1.4.2 (latest 1.4.4)

Hey there! I'm giving this a test and the first thing I noticed was that all the apt repos are configured for Stretch not Buster. Naturally I wasn't expecting to see this, as indicated by the title of the thread as well as the name of the iso. Was this an oversight on the newest iso you created?
I noticed something else just now which is extremely annoying. No matter which terminal is installed or used, selected text becomes unselected after just a fraction of a second and when pressing ctrl+shift+c immediately after highlighting. I've never seen a bug like this. Has anyone else encountered this or am I unique?

Thanks for taking interest in the respin. Its buster, in repo there is: "deb
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian buster main". I kept stretch, buster was still adding new packages. To upgrade latest pkgs, run Synaptic... "Reload", "Mark All Upgrades, and Apply.
I think the bug is same what I mentioned earlier, copy and paste doesn't work. Solution: downgrade clipit to 1.4.2 (currently 1.4.4). Uninstall clipit, and download 1.4.2 here.
https://packages.debian.org/stretch/clipit
Install with gdebi. Not to upgrade, run: "sudo apt-mark hold clipit".

Did a test, upgraded to latest. Its seems clipit is now working with 1.4.4-2. Before downgrading, first upgrade with Synaptic, and do a test.

There is a new upgrade (v.05)
1. 230 pkgs upgraded
2. Fixed clipit (downgraded 1.4.2) and marked hold
3. Stretch repos are blocked except mx stretch allowing mx tools upgrade.
4. Installer icon not visible (requires Desktop Icons extension), but located in ~/Desktop
5. 80Mb unnecessary pkgs removed

(link removed)
MD5: b3983a50e143afdd09b6b85e3e047f25
TO INSTALL:
Run in terminal "sudo -E minstall" or click Installer.desktop in ~/Desktop
PS.
I have been waiting to move back to MX from Ubuntu Gnome (3.30). I consider now Debian buster is stable enough for day-to-day work. This v.05 is my base to install mixture of gnome and kde apps (gnome-extensions, gnome-documents, tracker, evolution, dolphin, k3b, and ofcourse mx tools which are already there)..... "mx gnokde"

For Gnome DE a nice tool is gpaste. Seems like new version of clipit isn't compatible.
https://www.linuxuprising.com/2018/08/g ... r-for.html
Code: Select all
sudo apt install gnome-shell-extensions-gpaste gpaste

Hi, I've just read about your modifications and I'm very interested in testing it.
(Seems, as if there ain't an official buster-based MX testing image yet, is there?)
Could you please provide the link for the .iso again?
Are you still working/testing with your buster-based version?
If you do, did you find some more bugs in the meantime?
Those 80Mb unnecessary pkgs are XFCE-Related stuff?
Thanks in advance!

Thank you for taking interest in this respin. For some reasons, the frequent downloads or whatever, deleted everything. The website is up again but not the iso. I have updated to version 0.6, which work well. I will upload to another site soon.
PS.
In 80Mb were games and few unrelated tools.

I've found that archive.org works well for hosting ISOs, and even provides a torrent automatically. Make sure to list it under Community Software.

Xfce stuff here isn't necessary.
You can run
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get purge xfce4utils* orage tumbler-common
Most packages like thunar, exo-utils and others depends on a xfce4utils package and deinstalls automatically with this command.
For the rest run
and check orphans with
Check also /etc/skel and delete here /etc/skel/.config/xfce4 and /etc/skel/.config/Thunar and take a look at /root folder. Maybe it's preconfigured with xfce and you can delete same folders in /root/.config
But notice that some MX tools for Xfce DE, they're useless on Gnome.
On my system I've installed Budgie at a second desktop from MXPI. It's fine and you've no duplicates like a second terminal-application, screenshot-tool or similar things. O.k. for a better experience I've installed nautilus with --no-install-recommends. Looks great and a little bit Gnome-like.

Thanks dphn, all Xfce stuff were removed in first respin version. Only Thunar file manager was kept. About Gnome, minimal packages.
Its designed with minimal, easy to setup own packages. In my running machine, I removed Thunar and installed Dolphin and added other KDE apps. In the website, one of the slides shows the gnome extensions which I am using. This respin is now my permanent desktop since January. Everyday there are new upgrades, Debian does good job, and works well.

great work. Looks really good and some KDE apps are great, for example kdenlive, k3b and of course dolphin... but so much dependencies. :)

Here is a new update (version 07). The startup iso and install, has same look & feel as shown in screenshot.
http://amurt.ro/download/mx/mx-linux-gn ... ctive2.jpg
To have the fast boot as in ver. 0.5, this new version uses same update. In some machines, snapshot ver 0.6 cases long config search after HD install.
After installing in your HD, run Synaptic to upgrade 790 packages..... Reload, Mark All Upgrades and Apply.

In ver 0.7 there is a minor error. After login, a dialog box says "/home/amurt/Downloads does not exist". It asks to edit blueman-services.
Either edit with terminal or dconf-editor
Terminal
gsettings set org.blueman.transfer shared-path '/home/<username>/Downloads'
Dconf Editor
sudo apt-get install dconf-tools
Run dconf-editor. Click org,blueman,transfer and edit shared-path '/home/amurt/Downloads' to '/home/<username>/Downloads'
