Mine too after I found Start Page censor searches. They are lucky Elmer Fudd didn't show up.

I prefer the duck for more privacy and with several installs I don't have to confirm every time the google stuff.

Doesn't matter what we use, there'll always be someone who says "don't use it" and then provides next to no reason why not to use it

To be fair, that blog post (above) was simply reblogged from another blog and offered for whatever value it might offer. I have no problem with either Duck Duck Go or Startpage or Searx. Anything but Google or Bing is fine with me.

Duck duck go is hosted on Amazon (CIA partner). I use Qwant, I do not know how private it is, but I get what I want.

This is just a question. But why not using Chromium instead ? Chrome is the worst, considering tracking and private life policy.
I noticed that some MX users and MX developers use Chrome. It's something I don't understand.

Wow... I did not know the CIA had 'partners'.

I use chromium (even though I wish they had a more colorful icon). :lipsrsealed:
As for a search engine, I use Google most frequently (dum...dum...dum..)

The results it provides are superior to all the others I have tried... I search for a lot of "needles in haystacks" and I need to use multiple languages (when google fails to turn up information, I go to national search platforms/tools when searching in German and Russian).
I figure most of the marketing geniuses who would use/steal my search data would find very little useful. When I worry about 'safety', there is always
Tor

Google Chrome and Google search. Tried Chromium but had issues with it regarding my favorite extension, Checker Plus for Gmail.
Locked down a number of things on their Privacy page such as location services. I would guess many do not know they have the ability to do that.

Since the
Brave browser came out I used it alternately and now I have left it as the default in my MX 18 and as a search engine I left Qwant. I get two things, more browsing speed and no crawling in my searches. It is in
Github in stable and development.

I have tried and tried to use DDG, but the results are nothing compared to Google - especially with computer questions.
Many times I've entered the same search string into both to compare, and Google is better by far.
The same goes to a lesser extent with Startpage, even though they're supposed to supply Google results. I do not get the same results as in Google - again, mainly with computer questions. Who knows why?

@redacted I have tested and noticed the same especially with respect to genealogical, cartographic, historical and other 'old/ historic' published materials

I use
https://searx.me/?q=%s. I like the extra things DDG does for the user experience, but the actual search results remain lacking. Searx.me is a meta engine, and you can include dozens of base engines in the search, including google. Results are excellent, as is speed, and hits are dated when possible. The basic interface isn't great so I use a style sheet to make it more readable.
For images I usually use Yandex. Results are excellent (except on parochial US searches, since yandex is Russian), and I can hover-zoom them using the Imagus extension. I do NOT have a yandex account though, because I don't trust them. For US image searches I use DDG.

Well, I don't think other search engines are so bad that we cannot free ourselves from Google.
I mainly use Qwant, DuckDuckGo and Searx. Even if I removed Google from my browsers, sadness is I can't help myself to check sometimes on Google some unsuccessful searches...
But I try to avoid Google as often as possible.

Seriously, I do hate Google but I'm using Chrome because I got tired of FF causing me issues, crashing, freezing, generally being a pain.

Why don't you use Waterfox then, it's even in the repos of MX 18 (even when you've only updated MX 17 fully).

What a weird concidence. As I was taking my "coyote walk" last night, I found a duck-type bird (a grebe) by the side of the road that had been hit by a car and had its neck broken. I put it in a plastic bag and gave it to the alpha coyote when they showed up (waste not, want not). I thought it would take it way out of sight and eat it in private, but it only took it about ten meters away and proceeded to take it to pieces and gobble it down--I mean everything except the feathers, including the head and beak and legs, were chewed up and went down the hatch.

Chromium never feels quite finished to me, plus Chrome handles the few sites where flash is needed without issues.

You want to be private? ha ha ha ha
But here's some things you might do:
Re-install, encrypt your stuff and set up your firewall.
Get a no-log non-"14-Eyes" VPN provider. (Used to be "5-Eyes")
Change your VPN server at random intervals (this is easy, cuz they all have issues once in a while).
Use multiple browsers - this will get in the way of fingerprinting.
Don't use bookmarks in your browser - keep a separate list of links (I know, a pain, but not very hard once you get used to it).
Don't save passwords in any browsers - again, use a list.
If you need a password manager, use one that stays on your disk, and doesn't connect to anyone.
Keep everything possible on your machine, with regular backups to external disks.
Make sure you are a GAFA-free zone
Don't trust anyone.
Whew!
Am I nuts, or what?

I use StartPage as my default search engine, then go to SearX, with Google, DuckDuckGo, and Bing turned on in the Engines section, among others, if I need to go further. I rarely need to go beyond StartPage and SearX.

Never heard of SearX. It's a nice mega search engine. Thanks for sharing. I finally got my MX Blog going and it's index on the search engines now. I'm on the second page, so that's a good thing.

You might move up to page one if you tell people here where your blog is... domain url-wise.

A site that is not commercial, not selling anything and referencing MX we do not consider spam. However posting the link here is off topic.

Agreed, never heard of it either. But it gives slightly different results than the others, which is useful.
