MX18-LMDE Respin

Hi there,
my creation is now finished. I'm a german guy but I try to describe it in english in the right thread for this.
The system is a completly new build based on antiX 17.2.1 (Helen Keller). It provides different software packages than original MX-17. No games, but more multimedia apps. You find audacity, handbrake, avidemux, devede, dvd95, easymp3gain (thx to MX-Team for mp3gain), kid3-qt, mediathekview, qmmp and vlc. An interesting CD burning application also included. It's called X-CD-Roast and works with mkisofs and cdrecord. For CD-Ripping you can use the fantastic command-line tool abcde. You must configure it, but it works like a charm. So, the burning application and abcde not for purely beginners.
In this respin, deb-multimedia is activated by default, the system is build with it. Also included LMDE3 Repo from Linux Mint. I'm using their icons and the mint-y-theme by default but it's no clone. A little bit "mint-like", but I have created a different xfce-configuration. Original MX-17 Layout also included when you login with the root account.
The respin comes with no libreoffice and gimp pre-installed. But you can easily do a post-install for this offline. LibreOffice 6 (Packages from Debian-Backports) and GIMP 2.10 (Packages from MX-Testrepo). One-Click Install for both programs, very completly with english and german help and language files. After the installation or when you don't like it you can per One-Click easily remove the install-files.
So, a hard work goes to the end. Have tested this and the MX-Installer in my respin crashes from time to time after the copy of the system files to the HD/SSD. When I open a terminal and start the installer with sudo -E minstall it works without a crash.

I've found that if you upload them to archive.org, one ISO per upload, it'll also automatically create a torrent download for your files. You can also include a screenshot jpg with your files so that appears as a preview, like so:

thx for this stevo. Will look at that.
Note for GIMP 2.10 with deb-multimedia-repo:
deb-multimedia install a dmo-version of libbabl-0.1-0 via update. GIMP runs only with the MX-Version of that package. (0.58) You must set
before updating.

New ISO uploaded. qt5-gtk-platformtheme is installed, I have forgotten it in the 1st Release. So the qt5-apps and the MX-Tools looking better. A few more audio-codecs for XFCA-Converter and (of course) the new MX-Tool MX-Boot-Options now included. System ist up-to-date. Build-Date 2018-12-07

Just checked the MX17-LMDE-respin in USB live mode
LMDE mint Theme looks good and nice work.
I liked the Synaptic graphical fast repository selector and editor tool from mint. It has better features than Mx Repo Manager tool
Noticed the Tunar file manager is without menu bar by default.
Of course Control + M can show it.But better show by default .
I feel Menu layout of MX17 is better.
Is there a script or procedure to install this theme directly into mx17 or 18.

Hi,
thx for replies.
The original layout is also included. Login with the root account, here ist the original configuration. So, you can put roots .config/xfce4 folder to normal users or in /etc/skel. Last one stores the default layout for all new users. Note: user-profiles in the /home folder must be owned by the users, not root. So you must set chown -R username:username for the userprofiles you have changed.
A restart gives you the original MX17 layout on my release. So you can modify /etc/lightdm/lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf with the original background. This is located in /usr/share/backgrounds/MXLinux/lightdm/MX-Gold
New ISO online (2018-12-09). Better offline-install for libreoffice and gimp. After the software-install the packages deleted automatically. gimp-install sets automatically the libbabl 0.1-0 package to hold after the installation. New package included: libcanberra-gtk3-modules.
That's it for MX17-LMDE I think. Hope you enjoy it.

Hi,
found an issue on my sytem. I've tested MX-Snapshot on this and in the remastered version there's no installer Icon on the desktop. I've found the solution. It's easy, but I didn't think of that. Must do a copy of /etc/skel/Desktop/Installer.desktop to /usr/local/share/live-files/files/etc/skel/Desktop.
MX has a lot of fine details, it's triggy to rebuild all exactly on a personal compilation. But I do my very best.

updated to MX18-LMDE-Respin.
new apps mx18-artwork and grub-themes-mx included. metro-station wallpaper from antiX included for desktop and login. Slightly updated configurations to my last version. No software changes.
Note: with deb-multimedia, so it's compatible to LMDE and their packages.
Build on antiX-17.3-core, Build date 2019-01-04, 1,5 GB
Happy new year. :)

found a few issues and I have been fixed.
On new release the volumeicon and the keyboard-switcher didn't start at boot-time. Fixed.
Now LibreOffice 6.4 from Debian backports included for offline-install.
New ISO online. :)

Very interesting. Thank you for the effort.
I will download tomorrow when I get back to a faster connection. In the meantime ...
>> on antiX-17.3-core
So your creation is:
--Based on AntiX, with anti's approach to the systemd questions etc. under the hood?
--minus the window managers, and plus XFCE instead (like MX)?
--pulling in additional repos and thus offering a bit more software choice?
--fully upgradeable, as when the AntiX core moves from 17 to 18?
Is all that correct?
If so, you just saved me a lot of work that I haven't had time to do myself!

It's a MX-System with systemd-shim. MX is based on antiX. Here you find different software, optional installs (Gimp 2.10, LibreOffice 6.1.4) and a Linux Mint-feeling. So deb-multimedia must be enabled, necessary for the LMDE packages. Some meta-packages by LM depends on this, mint-meta-codecs for example. Another fine thing is the pre-installed avidemux app. MX-Tools are pre-installed too, but not all of them.
It's full upgradable but some MX-specific things are not there. I use another uca.xml and a different standard layout. MX-packages which updates layout-configurations are not installed here. So I've done many things by myself.
So there is another burning application. xcdroast 1.19 (Nov. 2018) by T. Niederreiter.
Note: When you prefer the standard xfburn you need to install the gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad package too, this is not pre-installed.
I'm a german guy. So in my systems german language packs are additionaly installed. Have fun with it.

The default integration with Virtual Box was removed, though.

yep, no virtualbox-guest-modules, no dkms and no gstreamer-plugins. I'm using this only on real hardware.
antiX-Kernel 4.9.146. System runs fine on older machines. But you can add what you want. MX-Kernels, mint-meta-codecs for all gstreamer-plugins, the virtualbox-guest-modules and make a snapshot by yourself.

not removed. It's a completly new build.

Thank you dphn, well done. Feels & looks as original LMDE. One of my friends wants Cinnamon. This Linux Mint theme in Xfce, and Cinnamon like setup may save my time. I am still testing.
Screenshot (I moved the panel locations and new wallpaper).
EDIT
Its not clear which repo is running the system. Example, synaptic is showing Cinnamon 4.0 is available. MX test repo (4.0) is not active and Debian buster and sid are still 3.8.x.

This respin is good, but I didn't managed to re-create a workable snapshot after upgrading to 18.2. The network doesn't connect. Also tried by changing kernel antix-4.9 to 4.19 and adding extension modules.
viewtopic.php?p=476327#p476327
Instead of modifying the respin, I used latest MX 18.2 install and created same look and feel as MX-LMDE. The Xfce Linux Mint theme collection (
https://www.xfce-look.org/p/1175954/ ) is poor quality. LM's own theme is very good. Instead of using their repo, as in MX-LMDE, I downloaded latest packages.
mint-x-icons_1.5.1_all.deb
mint-y-icons_1.3.3_all.deb
mint-themes_1.7.8_all.deb
http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/m/
This version of respin cannot be called MX-LMDE but MX-Mint. :) I will not use it but for my friend who wants Cinnamon looking desktop to replace Linux Mint with MX. My thanks to dphn's work.

Hi rasat,
thx for testing my respin. Have done this to provide a different software selection. The base for this is the antiX-core image with a lot of tweaks, so I'm using antiX kernels for older machines per default. You didn't find desktop-defaults packages from MX on this respin, so the the desktop-configuration cannot be updated automatically. The necessary files from their packages I have copied to the right place.
Have not enough time yet, but a little modification is needed for a good working system. gvfs-backends package is missing and the deb-multimedia packages must be replace with mx-packages. It's not difficult. The solution here did the job.
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=227270
After this reinstall vlc and others and you can temporarely activate dmo only for avidemux and some codecs. Have done this on my machines.

Hi rasat,
yesterday I've tested this. Have updated this to MX 18.2 and it isn't possible to create a workable snapshot of it. Now I have removed this. This isn't good for users who want to create own spins and that's the big unique feature of MX-Linux. I recommend to download the mint-themes manually, see above + mint-backgrounds-tara, mint-backgrounds-tessa, when you like it.
Another great idea is to use the LMDE 3 original cinnamon edition, when you like this DE. Deactivate deb-multimedia repo after installing mint-meta-codecs and then put MX/antiX repos on it. So you become all backported packages for Debian stretch.
