All got well but I have no wifi.
Did install MX-Linux before Antix install and there was no problem with wifi. But now I'm stuck.
Here's a readout of my system :

wifi chip is

Code: Select all

Network: Card-1: Qualcomm Atheros AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express)
driver: ath9k bus-ID: 01:00.0
IF: wlan0 state: down mac: <filter>
Now I need to know if when you install. You use the wicd boot key < F key choice before install on 1st boot screen >

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... antix+17.2

Plus what Anti said. I am currently with my claims adjuster. So I will be absent fotr awhile.

Which one should I download...?

antiX-17.2_386-full.iso
antiX-17.2_386-base.iso
antiX-17.2_386-core.iso
antiX-17.2_386-net.iso

Probably the -full which is complete.
*-base could also be a good starting point if you want to build it to your own specs.

I'm still using (updated) antiX-17 on this laptop. (Actually an alpha version)

Code: Select all

cat /etc/antix-version

Please look again at rokytnji's post. On the bootscreen of the live-stick you can choose wicd with the F4 key. This will make autostart a GUI-frienly way to connect to the internet on your installation.

Most settings are in the control-centre from the menu.
In control-centre go to system and then keyboard-layout. In keyboardlayouts click + and then on the drop-down-arrows.

I've read somewhere that one particular browser would use far less RAM then other browser, but fail to remember which one it was.It was in a Antix thread on this forum if I'm correct.
Any ideas guys...?

Found it, but it is not a browser, it's an app/tool
It is exactly what I need to use on a few other(older) PC's + this one.
But i found Firefox better(faster) running in Antix compared to MX already.
Copy from that post about Fluxbox :

Belive me, on a machine with 1 gig of ram, antiX (and specialy antiX with Fluxbox DE, in my case) is really the way to go, if you use it for stuff like browsing the web on Firefox, it does a way better use of your RAM ...

All that is left to do is watch some youtube

Congrats

On my single core atom atom installs. I recommend pale moon browser inside your meta package installer inside the antiX control center.

Youtube videos have the rest of anything else. Give likes to runwiththedolphin.

Hello, you can try Palemoon (and addon: Lull the Tabs, etc), or Midori v6 beta version.

This is most coincidental. I dug out my old EeePC 900 which had a faulty keyboard and sourced a new keyboard for $15 and installed it yesterday. It has 4GB plus 16GB SSDs and I had to use cli-installer to get it to install on the 4GB one where it used 2.5GB. GUI installer refuses to install on under 4GB and it reports 3.8 as size of that disk.
It booted up straight away and wifi worked fine after configuring with Ceni. Unfortunately the F keys on the keyboard don't work properly but it's amazing this unit still works at all after it's punishing life of about 9 months travelling in Vietnam and Cambodia and being used to play music in a pub between bands.
It will only be used to play music now so I downloaded and installed DeadBeef from MX repo which works nicely. I wonder how much more life I can get out of this 10 year old machine?

Sunrat,
These older machines were far better constructed compared to the new series.
It's not the place to discus this but I still own a Toshiba 120Mhz(!) 24(!) Mb(!)RAM running W98....
Those were the days, these laptops last a lifetime...! sigh....!
Wonder, would I be able to install a Linux OS on that little old thing...??

suggest for those with 1,2,even 4gb ram to implement zram and zswap.
https://mxlinux.org/wiki/other/zram

to install zram:

Code: Select all

sudo cp /usr/local/bin/zram /etc/init.d
sudo update-rc.d zram defaults
use root thunar to edit /etc/init.d/zram
change zram factor=25 to 100 (ZRAM Factor=100, 1CPU. 200, 2CPU. 400, 4CPU, etc. it works for my pc).
next swappiness 60 (default) to 100.

add to fstab;

Code: Select all

tmpfs	/var/tmp	tmpfs	rw,nodev,nosuid,mode=1777	0	0
zram is easily install, also easily remove.
to remove zram:

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/zram stop
sudo update-rc.d -r zram
sudo rm /etc/init.d/zram

i found a better zram script which create zram per core.
open terminal, input;

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/zram stop
select all copy, open root thunar, goto /etc/init.d/ folder, double click on zram file to edit.
select all and paste to replace old scrip with new script.

Code: Select all

Hi guys,

Although I activated the switch 'Automatic reconnect to this network' I need to reactivate and enter login to access the network in the Wicd network manager after I reboot the system.
I suppose that is not how it works..? How can I solve this problem..?

Thanks (again)

Hi! I'm trying out zram on my netbook (that has 1 gb of RAM). I took the liberty to make a condensed version "for dummies" of the install and uninstall process (I'm having problems with the swappiness change... any tips?:

To install and configure Zram via the terminal:
Open the terminal and do this steps (note: replace "leafpad" with your preferred text file editor) :

1- sudo cp /usr/local/bin/zram /etc/init.d
2- sudo update-rc.d zram defaults
3- sudo leafpad /etc/init.d/zram
change zram factor=25 to 100 (ZRAM Factor=100, 1CPU. 200, 2CPU. 400, 4CPU, etc. it works for my pc).
4- next swappiness 60 (default) to 100.
5- Edit fstab by doing this: sudo leafpad /etc/fstab
Add this line and save:
tmpfs /var/tmp tmpfs rw,nodev,nosuid,mode=1777 0 0
6-Reboot your computer

To remove zram via the terminal:
Open the terminal and do this steps:

1- sudo /etc/init.d/zram stop
2- sudo update-rc.d -r zram
3- sudo rm /etc/init.d/zram
4- Reboot your computer

You have to make these changes
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic ... post-13591
BTW, this would not be nessecary and the wicd-daemon would start automatically, if the wicd was choosen with F4 key before installation.

Hello! I apologize for my reopening this old tread, but I have problems on running Antix on my old Asus eeepc.
I have some old netbook of EeePc series. I wanted to give them a new life with Antix. I succeeded in installing it on the 901 model (I needed to perform a frugal install in order to fit it in the 4GB ssd).
Now I’m trying to run Antix 17.4.1 on my old ASUS eeepc 1025c as well. But I get a big problem at the beginning of the live session: after reading on the screen something like: “waiting /dev to be fully populated” the screen become black and nothing happen anymore.
I tried all the booting options, but unsuccessfully.
Notice that MX linux runs very good on that netbook, both live and installed (now I am writing this post in this way) but it is very slow.
A good improvement I obtained installing IceWm and Rox-Filer and running a session with them. But, in this way, I miss all the facilities of antix configuration (ie. control center).
Can anybody help me in installing antix on my netbook?
Thanks

I'm not going back to read the last 3 pages in this thread right now, but there's a discussion on how to do a full install on a 4GB netbook here - viewtopic.php?f=40&t=47569&p=475075

Basically there are 2 options, use the cli-installer, or modify a config file while live booted to allow the GUI installer which otherwise blocks installation to a drive under 4GB.
I installed antiX to an EeePC900 (similar to 901 but Celeron CPU) using cli-installer and it works OK except for some of the function buttons not functioning. There were several packages including eee-acpi-scripts which were supposed to enable these but they are not available for Stretch or Buster (curiously package is in Sid but doesn't work). The last installation I did where these worked fully was MX14.
Some of the advice in the Debian wiki may still be useful - https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEeePC/HowTo/Configure

Many thanks for your suggestions sunrat, but my frugal installation on the EeePc 901 runs very well. The problem is the EeePc 1025c, probably about its Integrated Graphics: perhaps it doesn't support the 1024x600~60Hz resolution. Again, if somebody will help me on that, I'll appreciate.

If MX boots without problems then you might want to consider changing the kernel on the antiX-live-stick. MX has the 4.19 kernel and antiX has the 4.9 kernel.
Maybe worth a try.

I tried and succeded in changing the kernel, not exactely at the first endeavor :-)
So, I attempted antiX-17.4.1_386-full with kernels 4.19.25-antix.1-686-smp-pae and 4.20.12-antix.1-686-smp-pae but both gived me a black screen at the same point when loading.
I tried to install the antix desktop on the slow working MX 18.02, so I installed IceWm plus ROX filer. They works well but I miss the Antix configuration tools, so the desktop is not so easy to use.
Lastly I tried antiX-16.1_386-full with kernel 4.4.10-antix.1-486-smp. It worked fine and I installed that.
Now is working quite wel but I am worried about security issues: Is that version still supported and, if yes, for how long?
Thanks again for kind help
