MX 17 ATI support ?

#1 Post by DonH »

Is the ATI / AMD fglrx install package going to become part of MX 17 at some point ? I downloaded 17 and installed but, could not find the fglrx installer in MX tools. So I am back on 16.1 for now.

AMD no longer supports the fglrx driver. They recommend the open source radeon or AMDGPU drivers, depending on the graphics processor.
The latest iteration of the fglrx driver available for download says it supports kernels up to 3.19 MX-17 comes with a 4.13 kernel.

Due to that, we cannot support fglrx. Not because we don't want to, but because we can't make sure it will install. It's proprietary after all, so even if we could patch it, we're not allowed to.

That said, if you want to go ahead and try anyway, the sgfxi utility is still included in MX-17. Its author H2 has done very good work supporting installation of AMD & nVidia drivers over the years, and if I had to try installing fglrx on MX-17 I would try his utility as being the most likely to work. But I suspect you'd still have to downgrade the kernel to do so.

fglrx won't even work with the version of xorg in MX 17, so any kernel downgrades won't work either. We have it patched to build with recent kernels on MX 16, but the xorg problem is a show-stopper on 17. The free radeon driver works well, from what I've seen, or the amdgpu driver, if your hardware supports it. That driver is where AMD has shifted their work.
