New Forum Changes

As you are aware we have migrated to new Forum software. This was necessary as the software was out of date and no longer supported by phpBB. Also internal security is improved.

Following are some salient differences and changes from the previous software. This is not intended as a full guide.

1. The Announcement banner can be suppressed by clicking on the X when hovering over the right hand corner of the announcement box. It will reappear when a change is made to the content.

2. The Quick links at the upper left gives access to a number of post listings such as Your Posts, New Posts, Unread Posts, etc. These can also be accessed on the third like down from Quick links.

3. The gray bar below Quick Links will show what forum you are currently in.

4. The Newest Posts is a new module that will show the eight latest posts, top posters and newest members. Unread posts will have a yellow outlined box to the right of the post.

5. Mark Forums Read is now at the top right of the Index page just above the Newest Post block. I will only show if the Announcement block is suppressed. (See item 1).

6. Notifications and Private Messages to the right of your Username at the top right will show the number of each if they exist.

7. We no longer have the Thanks capability. When a module becomes available we will implement it.

This looks a bit restricted, if anyone clicks this X while browsing around, the banner is gone until one of a restricted few changes it? Or have I misread this
description?

The forum is really great on my telephone.
I can read and write without having to resize.

We will adapt. Currently, I wish for cell borders on new post listings and am inclined to put sunglasses on, but I'm sure I'll grow fond of it soon. The colourful user names look good.

Just to confirm, there is no longer any big red box informing you of new private messages, and the only notification for that now is found at the top right corner, right?

On a phone the number of unread PMs shows up on the browser tab (Dolphin).

EDIT: also on a PC, I now see.

Can't see the "Mark Forums Read" thingy. Everything else looks great!

It's on the 'Board Index' page, I don't see it though on the 'New posts' or 'Active topics' pages.

You are not displaying an entire line where Marked Forums Read shows. That is because you have the Announcement showing. If you click the X in the Announcement banner at the top right it will remove it and show the Marked Forums Read line. Thanks for pointing this out.

I think you are in a different view (search maybe?), you'd see the link if you just go directly to http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/ (or board index)

But you have a point, I'd like to see that link in other views too.

I am a bit bothered by the multitude of blue shades in the forum theme... the most troubling are the blue links of blueish background: the unfollowed links in the post are blue, quick reply is a different shade of blue, the background has alternative shades of blue, post title is dark blue (which is the only shade of blue that doesn't bother me), headers are different shade of blue...

I wonder, if nothing else, can we do the background just a shade lighter and the post title a bit darker for contrast? Not sure what the theme allows.

It would require hard coded changes. On my screen the contrast is perfect. It is difficult to accommodate all screens, and if the changes you suggest could be made it would cause problems with my display. There will always be individual preferences and we cannot accommodate all of them.

If a themes module becomes available, you might do well to consider it.

I have trouble reading posts since the forum change due to the contrast. Very washed out for me on my pcs. perfect on my phone though.

Always a possibility. May I suggest brightness/contrast settings of your monitor? It causes big differences in appearance, as I am sure you know.

You can suggest...

what would be OK is having all the posts look like the "last" post. on my screens, the "last" posts all have black text which is perfectly easy to read, but the other text does not look black (grayish, I don't know). (including the text in the reply boxes So replies are gray on white.)

Well there are dozens of themes, from dark to light to garish colors. We can look at others as time permits.

That seems like a reasonable position, Rich, given some of the responses. Won't happen in a hurry, though...

It would be nice if some could be implemented and then users could pick their preferred one using a drop down menu or something? Don't know what the standard is these days for phpbb.

My age is probably the reason I cannot see a user control panel. Can someone direct me?

I find the Code easier to read now, the dim blue in the old forum was hard work for me. it would be even better if
Code text darkened when the Cursor is placed on it - as the signature texts do now.

In my User Control Panel is this information about PMs. "Folder is 44% full (89 out of 200 messages stored)"
What happens when it reaches 200 ? Delete all, delete some, block any more ?

something wrong, missing a tick or wait until things get hammered out?

This had been around forever, it's not new.

At 200 you don't see new messages, and have to delete or move old ones.

Now in Post Reply screen: cut and paste out of Leafpad works. Copy and paste also works. Suggest you change your favorite editor if cut and paste (as opposed to copy and paste) is so important to you.

Hammering out, BTW, is essentially over.

Let us see if things, Kwite, Leafpad, AntiX, MX-15, Plasma 5 Kubuntu, Iceweasel and FireFox, will work as expected
today. No, still behaving like it was last night.

I do not understand what all that means in relation to the Forum.

It is related to how the new data base does or does not use my(or anybody's) editors and when the cut or copy and
paste can used to answer the question. Must be only me and the added steps to get the job done.

Thanks for the clarification. I go messed up with some of the apps listed.
I cannot duplicate that behavior. Anyone else seeing this?

This doesn't clarify anything for me. It seems to use everybody's editors except yours, and it is difficult for me to understand how "a new data base" would affect cut/paste or copy/paste operations which I understood to be GUI operations. Finally, a list that includes "Kwite, Leafpad, AntiX, MX-15, Plasma 5 Kubuntu, Iceweasel and FireFox" (so 3 OS's and 4 applications) has no inherent sense for me.

I think something is wrong with his clipboard. perhaps he is using all the other stuff if virtualbox and trying to copy and paste into different system instances. that doesn't work unless you have the bi-directional clipboard enabled and the guest editions installed. even then, the bi-directional clipboard doesn't work quite right in antiX anyway (lacking a full DE, which VB seems to expect).

in any case, the forum software exists completely on the internet and has nothing to do with copy and paste on a client system. when you cut and paste, you are actually just interacting with your web browser, not the forum software directly. so zeeone has something going on that is a mystery.

64-bit Pale Moon -- Not logged in yet to forum, reading different posts, no choice to answer except use "Post Reply"
button. If the "Post Reply" button is clicked, one is taken to the "Log On" Page to log on, then returned to the
"Post Reply" page. It is at the page my favorite editor will not work in "Copy and Paste" mode. The editor says yes it
is however, the page says yes I am receiving and no I will not paste it or do an icon.

When logged in and choose a post, you will be taken to the last post with a "Quick Reply" open window. There the editor
can "Copy and Paste" mode from the editor can be used. Then there is two buttons "Full Editor & Preview" and "Submit".
If you are done with your entry then click "Submit" but, if you want to add some icons or an attachment then click on
"Full Editor & Preview" and be moved to, ta-da, the "Post Reply" window and do the additions you want, click "Submit"
and there is your name in lights.

zeeone, I tried your procedure in Firefox. I had no issues pasting in some text copied from another app.
are you actually getting an error message? if so , please provide a screenshot.
