New MX + Mepis logo

#1 Post by BitJam »

Perhaps it is just me but I find the new MX + Mepis logo cringe-worthy. YMMVG.

I think the plain MX logo is already rather busy with the mountains and the X but I thought the implied contrast between the X in the MX logo with the circle in the Mepis logo was very witty. The Mepis logo by itself is wonderful with the moon and mountains doubling as the arc of a circle with arrow points at the ends. When the logos are combined, the dominant theme is the circle with an X over it and the mountains are nearly lost. A circle with an X over it is so universal and so strong, it simply takes over.

I'm not sure what to do in order to fix it. My first stab would be to replace the circular ring with a filled circle, maybe some shade of blue that is dominant in the color scheme here. It might help to use color to differentiate the mountains from the X. Another direction would be to make it more abstract. Keep the mountains and the circular ring from Mepis and add a pie slice at the top of the ring pointing downward. The cut edges of the pie slice would pick up the diagonals from the mountains, implying the X without really showing it. This would help defuse the strong X.

A third idea would be to make the circle look like a globe by adding the shape of a continent. Still have the mountains in the foreground. So instead of a moon-rise, it become earth-rise. There are probably not enough pixels to do this right but antiX uses a globe as a symbol. See the attached bootloader background image. Simplifying this and putting the Mepis mountains in front of it might be very interesting. It could be a good symbol for the combination of Mepis and antiX.

I was thinking about asking Unix stickers to make stickers for antiX and MX but TBH I did not feel comfortable proposing any of our existing logos to them. The antiX logo at the top of their forums is good but at the very least it would need to have much greater resolution. I think the existing Mepis logo is terrific as-is (assuming it has enough resolution).

Agreed. I hate to be critical of other people's work when I myself couldn't do any better, but since you broke the ice...

Personally, I think it would be fine to come up with something unique for MX that doesn't incorporate the old MEPIS logo. The "M" in MX already pays homage to MEPIS, but it's time to move on. MEPIS is dead, long live MX.

By that logic Mepis should be removed from the forum title. Since the forum still supports Mepis that is a non starter as far as I am concerned, hence a combined logo of some sort.

Then that logo would be perfect, it looked like MEPIS logo died and it was crossed over :D

I agree with richb but you (Adrian) made me LoL.

There are at least two issues here:
  1. The MX logo or logos
  2. Combined Mepis + MX logo or logos

The mountains are actually supposed to represent Egyptian pyramids; something to do with "Mepis" being a mispronounced Memphis, Tenn, which was named after the Egyptian city.

Maybe we can have something else symbolize ancient Egypt, but I do agree the new logo is busy, and cramming too much symbolism in a small space has that effect.

That's a kind of tortured explanation that Warren came up with... not sure if we need to follow the tradition.

But with Mepis in stalled, perhaps forever development, to change that tradition now would be odd. That is drastically new Mepis Logo, drastically old Mepis.

I think we need to keep MEPIS logo for the MEPIS section of the forum, it doesn't mean that we need to re-design it and try to keep the same tortured symbolism if we design a new logo for the entire forum.

But sections do not have logos, the forum does in the title Page. I do not see how, within the phpBB structure, individual forums can show logos.
