Failed live boot

I'm trying to work out why some users can boot ok from cd/dvd while others cannot.

For those that cannot, here are some boot cheats that might work

bdev=/dev/sr0 OR
bdev=/dev/dvd OR
bdev=/dev/cdrom

blab=MX-14-live

No luck with any of those.

Thanks for this, anticapitalista; unfortunately they didn't work for me. I raised a post about my problem, but this has been removed (or I can't find where it has gone).

Essentially though, the only time I have had this problem, is with Arch based distros and I have sometimmes had to use

Code: Select all

archisodevice=/dev/sr0
I'll have a look at this again tomorrow, no time tonight.

Many thanks,

Chris.

IDE vs. SATA?

Would introducing a delay help? Something like rootdelay=10 I've never seen this fix the problem, but I've seen people recommending it... so who knows.

It will search for the bootdevice for 15 secs to begin with, it never finds the drive. I doubt adding 10 secs will help. Worth a shot though. I'll give it a whirl :smile:

Nope, rootdelay didn't help.

Just to be as detailed as possible, who knows it might help:

Once you hit enter on the bootscreen the counter goes to 100, loading kernel. Then it stays stuck on that 100 for a while, and all that time the light of the drive that the disk is in is on.

As soon as the screen goes black and proceeds to display the booting process the light goes off, and it will stay that way.

Another cheat

find=all

If that fails, then we need serious debugging.

Add this bp=2 then at the screen type lsmod somehow copy the info.

Also try bp=2 then type find /dev/ -type b | egrep -v "/ram|/loop"

or simpler find /dev/ -type b

The find command errored.

Here is the result of the requested commands:

sda is my harddrive that I am typing this from now (sig line system)
sdb is the USB external drive

Uhm.. *giggle* I noticed that already ;) Kidding hehe.

But yeah.. I wonder why not. All those other distros I have tried did.. :confused:

Ok, try this.

You need your original downloaded iso - MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso
You need to be running linux
You need to install xdelta3 if you don't already have it.

1. Download the patch called new_delta from here:

http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Others/

2. Put the delta patch in the same directory as the MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso

3. In that directory, open a terminal and type:

xdelta3 -d -s MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso new_delta please-work.iso

4. Burn please-work.iso to cd/dvd

*Note - you don't have to call the new iso please-work.iso :)

I don't know if this info will be helpful. My four computers (all notebooks) are very similar to each other. But the CD (burned with Brasero from Wheezy) works on each one, so:

2. Put the delta patch in the same directory as the MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso

3. In that directory, open a terminal and type:

xdelta3 -d -s MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso fix_delta MX.iso

4. Burn MX.iso to cd/dvd

Hi, all.

I couldn't get the xdelta utility to work using the syntax that was published. Is it possible to get access to the nightly buillds, which incorporate this fix?

Thanks,

Chris.

There aren't any nightly builds.

Do you have xdelta3 installed?
What was the error message?

Did you get the first ISO from the torrent? It has a different name you might need to rename it before applying the patch.

Jerry, we need to make sure we use the ISO name consistently...

Yeah. There was a mixup between anti and me about naming that certainly won't happen again.

Hi, guys. I used xdelta from my distro repository, not xdelta3 which is also available. Just installing the correct xdelta now and making a new ISO. I'll report back.

Cheers,

Chris.

I'm not sure if you can use xdelta on it instead of xdelta3.

As Adrian noted, the name of iso file you would have gotten from the torrent is "MX-14_13.97.iso".

If that's what you have, you need to rename it to "MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso", because the patch is for a iso file with that name.

I missed the comment about renaming the file, so I created a new image, and it didn't work. I've now renamed the torrent ISO and am doing the xdelta3, again. Will report progress (or not).

I noticed that the file sizes from the AntiX and Mepis download sites appeared to be different, strange.

Same problem, sadly. :-(

...15 second timeout.

I'll have a think about some other possibilities.

I see that anti has uploaded another patch to: http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Others/, "fix2_delta".
He hasn't said anything about it (yet).
I assume you apply it similar to the others.

The correct fix2-delta has just been uploaded along with its md5 to check. This adds a couple more modules to the initrd.gz.

'fix2-delta' fails. I'll try to think of another way, but I may come back when the installer can boot. If this is a big issue, should the ISO regress to '-alpha'? Could a different installer be used, as the antiX and Mepis ones seem to work, like other distros.

This looks like a great project, so i'll keep an eye on it and try the next published ISO.

Chris.

Downloaded the iso from Anti's download site, using the apple machine.
Using Deb 7, and Kb3, erased the the alpha, burned the beta 1 onto the cd/rw. No problems.
Beta 1 cd r/w boots from the Apple(SATA), installs to usb external(IDE) HD, boots and runs good.

Seeing the booting problems, drop in the cd to the main machine. It is setup with IDE HD and DVD-R
and it does start booting and stops with the following:

Welcome to MX-14-13.97 beta1!
Current bootloader codes:
quiet antiX=MLX
loading modules from /live/custom/MX-14/module
Scanning usb,cd devices for antiX/linuxfs

No, have not tried the cheats yet. It does look like a IDE/SATA thing to me.

@zeeone, is that with the original "MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso", or did you apply anticapitalista's latest xdelta patch, fix2_delta?

If you used the original iso, I would apply the fix2_delta patch, burn a new cd, and try again.

Here's the instructions on how to apply the fix2_delta patch (they're anti's instructions from this post here: http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 52#p327752 with "fix_delta" occurrences changed to "fix2_delta")
You need your original downloaded iso - MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso
You need to be running linux
You need to install xdelta3 if you don't already have it.

1. Download the patch called fix2_delta from here:

http://www.mepisimo.com/antix/Others/

2. Put the delta patch in the same directory as the MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso

3. In that directory, open a terminal and type:

xdelta3 -d -s MX-14_13.97_386-xfce.iso fix2_delta MX.iso

4. Burn MX.iso to cd/dvd

With the latest patched delta iso (as posted above), try this.

1. At boot grub, type bp=2
2. Press Enter/Return
3. At the prompt, type load-live-modules
4. Type exit

(It *might* work with the original downloaded iso before patching)

This worked for me, I think the CD I had was the delta2 version, but I've done this so many times, i'm no longer sure!

The X session struggled to configure, so I tried again with the cli-installer. The system is currently installing, so at least we managed to get past the boot problem. I have no idea why X isn't working, that's a first. One step at a time...

Cheers,

Chris.

### Off topic

System installed and I rebooted as directed. Got to the 'Boot from CD' prompt and it just waits and waits.......no GRUB errors reported during the installation.

Trying install again. If I have any more problems unrelated to this topic, I will post elsewhere.

Chris.

@chris_debian,

Even though there is a cli install option, I would have tried to figure out why X wasn't starting in a Live Session, before installing MX14 to harddrive.

There might be some video related cheats you can add to the boot command (or maybe they're available from the F5 key?) Anti or some other antiX regular can give more details on that.

What is your video hardware?

Chris, best to start another thread, thanks.

Ok, another attempt. This is a bit neater.

At boot menu, type load=pata-via or load=all

Hey golden45, could you also try typing only

load=pata-via

at the boot menu screen. It would really help to see if this was the missing module.

(edit - this and golden45's post should really be in the boot thread. Mod, please move)

I don't know if this info helps, but on an old HP d325 dinosaur, live cd said:

And wouldn't boot.

I wish I could install this, but will stay with Antix that she has used a bit, as i must give a friend a dual boot safe non-winXP option for her banking, facebook gaming and web exploration...

Thanks anti,

it really is not trivial ...

While placed with dd on the stick ISO is not a problem,
brings the MX.iso with all Fix (delta) and Tricks (Grub2) from Multi-USB_Stick on the same computer the same error.

My problem is really not important ...
You need time for the beta. ;)
