hmm...we just need to find out what the debian installer does, right? I wonder if they are setting up a self-signed key.

Well, I got around to installing MX-18 this morning. Clean install on a clean partition. This has to be one of the worst installation experiences with any Linux distro that I've ever tried.
Boring. Absolutely, stunningly boring.
The initial install worked flawlessly, and very quickly. Nothing hung, or generated error messages. Nearly all I had to do was sit there and watch. I didn't have to fiddle with anything or reboot and start over. I mean, really. You MX devs have apparently under-estimated how a dodgy installation process can make the end user feel....well....needed, I guess.
And to add insult to injury, after the install MX 18 booted up without issue or error. I was able to quickly find and install the programs I use frequently. They all work. I set up access to my Windows network drives without isnsue.
Next time, please try harder to make the installation something that makes the end user feel more involved...engaged... I haven't felt this unnecessary since my daughters became teenagers.

The following situations I get when booting with the default options (with o without state folder)
off pc --> win 10 --> reboot --> mx live usb ==> ok use ram +/- 400MB
off pc --> mx live usb ==> not ok use ram increasing --> reboot --> mx live usb ==> not ok use ram increasing +/- 1.7 G increase 3.7 GB i shut down
off pc --> mx live usb ==> not ok use ram increasing --> shut down --> mx live usb ==> not ok use ram ncreasing
