Installation was a breeze. Love the new custom partition section especially. It's practically bullet-proof now.

No preselected options. Just select the relevant partitions.
I did notice my boot partition (nvme0n1p1) didn't have a label but root did (nvme0n1p2). I selected /boot/efi from the drop down.
RC3-1.jpg

EFI partition selected automatically now.

Adding the various logs to view from QSI is perfect. Nice touch. :number1:

Did a clean install 5 hrs ago on my AAO 722 test machine, reusing home and adding a swap file in addition to a swap partition b/c this is relatively slow machine.

All went well, though I have one small (minor) observation: when on my 1366x768 display the Installer gets to the Customized Installation > Partition choice, its window is small enough that most of that critical selection table is off the app's window. I can change it manually but I already know what I'm missing. That table is hard enough for many users that I wonder if it would be useful and possible to scale it differently.

Here on a 1366x768 screen:
On the current default window size 800x600 of the installer the right columns are not visibel:
minstaller-default-size-800x600.jpg
Maybe the default windows size of the Installer get adjusted a bit like this:
On a Screen size greater 1024x768 the default installer window size get set to 980x600
in addition the left help pane get a bit reduce in width, so that all columns get displayed:
minstaller-default-size-980x600.jpg
For screen sizes like 1024x768 or smaller the default installer windows get set as it is now 800x600.
Thanks

1. Installation process runs smoothly, no problems or bugs found.
2. No problems with LibreOffice anymore.
3. There are still some localization issues:
- There are some strings in MX-Installer not translated to Polish. Especially the partition manager tab looks strange, when the sheet is in English, but the help on the left side in Polish. It seems, that the translation on Transifex, I did a couple days ago, was not included.
- MXFB Settings Manager is only partially translated to Polish. The descriptions under icons in the SM are in English despite of the correspondent program names in the Appfinder are in Polish. The only thing is translated are buttons and partially the "About" section.
- The Font App is not translated to Polish.
- The Tint2 Manager is not translated to Polish.

Dear @dolphin_oracle ,

The link to sourceforge goes to Xfce.
It does not go to the Fluxbox directory.

If people are not careful, they will download the wrong ISO.

See you soon,
Wallon

there are additional localizations for the installer that I've packaged last night/this morning.

Tint2 Manager has not been translated yet into any language AFAIK for lack of Dev time.

It seems at this point that some localization problems might have to be fixed after Release.

Thanks for the report.
Just adjusting the Tint2 Manager to get available translations displayed. The Help text seem not to have made it onto transifex yet, so will shortly be send onto transifex for translations. Also just checking the mx-font re-translation .. I may see what the issue might be ...

mxfb-settings: same in German and other languages I tried (es, fr, it, pl, ru)
Buttons get translated, message and app names do not.

RC3 in German

Different to MX21, where the app names get translated but message and buttons do not.

I have a little concern about the potential for confusion within the installers custom partitioning. Check the screenshots for examples.

For an experiences operator, this is a trivial thing, but how many are going to be tripped up with OEM variations in partition label names?
This is a drive only used for Linux, we use our normal naming convention and the EFI-SYSTEM label is very easily identified as, EFI, an operator can easily move forward with confidence.
Screenshot_EFI.jpg
However, OEM provisioned Windows machines can introduce a heap of confusion. Here is a 2020 Lenovo, where the EFI partition is labelled SystemDrv

There are other labels I've seen like ESP and this is covered in the accompanying help column, but I think it needs a tiny bit more.
Should we give a little thought about verbage or a que in the notification that will assist to minimise the confusion when (not if) it arises and in the accompanying help, add something that may assist with what is displayed in the 2nd pic, remembering that they will not all be the same.

Fringe issue, I wanted to mention est anyway :
current xanmod and liquorix kernels are not installed because of configuration problems and dkms errors.

Everything else works, but i couldn't try out much, my current line to the internet carries the bits one by one. for the rc3 fluxbox iso it took 6 hours over night, so testing and trying out is no fun.

Hello.

I'll start with the positive for the Live USB key in [fr] and [fr_BE].

The ISO works much better, well done to the developers.
I no longer have to select the screen resolution with the F7 Console key.
I can now right- or left-click on the desktop icons.
The menus are better translated, but not everything is perfect. I've noticed the same thing as fehlix, some translations are missing.

MX Installer: I installed on an excellent Samsung USB 3.1 key (called "Champagne Silver" - 400 MB/s). This drive has been tested on Windows (CrystalDiskMark) and Linux (Gnome-Disk). I got read speeds of 400 MB/s with Exfat, Ext2 and f2fs formatting.

I installed on a single f2fs partition to avoid journaling file system.

Here's my fstab, which is super simple;
# Pluggable devices are handled by uDev, they are not in fstab
UUID=7999d807-6ec1-420c-8d3c-53fb1785296c / f2fs noatime 0 1
/swap/swap swap swap defaults 0 0

For MX Installer, the headings in the "Choose partitions" table are no longer translated! It used to be translated. See my printscreen.

Here is the desktop info;

I checked the SHA256 and MD5 of my ISO. It's all OK.
But why is MX Fluxbox so slow?
The first boot with the dynamic MX Linux logo is horribly slow!
Every time I click on icons (for example "Settings Manager"), I have to wait a very long time before I get a window.
Something is strangling MX Fluxbox. I've never seen this even with Debian 12 Gnome on my PC?

Here is HTOP with only 2 tabs open in Firefox.

With "MX Package Installer", I was unable to install java.
I had to clean up the packages with Synaptic.
To install java, you need to install the "default-jdk" package.
This needs to be corrected in "MX Package Installer".

The .conky MyConky and five ManyRoads in .conky

In "Exit Options", no buttons (icons) are translated! As all the buttons are in grey and black, new users will hesitate before clicking!

The "papersize" file is not located.
This is an important variable in the system.
Explanations are not given in the MX Linux manual.
New users do not know this.
In my case, in Europe, I have to replace "letter" with "a4".
Everything must be written in lower case.
As a reminder, Debian 12 Gnome locates this file directly.

I don't think it was a wise choice to activate ufw.

In my case, I protect my desktop like a server with a UPS (battery that filters the electric current - Eaton Ellipso Pro 650). A USB cable connects the battery to my desktop. Communication between my desktop and the external battery stops because of the firewall.

Hplip can't find my printer on the local network. My printer is connected to the modem by an RJ45 cable.

It's really simple to disable it entirely if you choose.

Search gufw from the menu, enter your password, then use the Status slider to turn the firewall off.

I know that, but you have to think about new users.
I can already see all the questions on the forum. Why can't MX Linux find my printer? Please help me. You'll have to answer all the questions...

I'll look at that but it won't be soon. those are the fluxbox variables. at the moment the options are used to set the features directly.

I've just tested on a fresh MX-23 RC3 Fluxbox install, and both my network printers have been automatically detected without disabling the firewall, so it's not going to be something that affects all users.

Other leading Linux distros have shipped with an enabled firewall for years, without it being a problem for users. It adds another layer of security in some situations, so was important for MX Linux to use it.

Option: Update -> does nothing! No window opens.
Option: Deactivate -> MX Tweaks window opens!
Update does its work without opening a window
Deactivate opens the MX Tweak window where the user can uncheck the default to "Generate an All Apps etc."

Dear @Jerry3904,

Dear Jerry,

I think that the word "Deactivate" (not sure if it's the right word in the menu) on its own, without any explanation, is not very understandable.
It would be better to write;
deactivate applications
deactivate options
...

Kind regards,
Wallon

Dear @Jerry3904,

With Thunar, I put all the files in the trash.
But I can't see the trash icon on my desktop.
I couldn't find in the MX Linux manual how to put a trash icon on my desktop. In MX Tweaks, I didn't see anything about the trash icon on the desktop.
How do I do this?

Kind regards,
Wallon

Dear @Jerry3904, Dear @dolphin_oracle, Dear @fehlix,

I've understood why there's no French translation for [fr_BE] in the Fluxbox general menu.
On the Github site, there is no translation for [fr_BE].
https://github.com/fluxbox/fluxbox/tree/master/nls
All the translations are very old.
The [fr_FR] translation is not complete. There are many lines that are not translated. What's more, the translations are not very good. The translator did not know Fluxbox.
Examples with mouse options to focus on Fluxbox windows.
"To focus" is translated by the French word "converger". Converger in French has the same meaning as the English verb "To converge". The translator didn't get it! The word "focus" is also used in common French.
On Github, you have to commit to update translations. You need to be a developer to understand Github and make commits.
There's also a big problem with antiX Fluxbox because the translations aren't on the Github site.
I haven't found an active forum for communicating with Fluxbox developers. The developers haven't put anything on Transifex, Weblate... to help the translators. This is not a good thing if you really want to introduce Fluxbox to all language communities.
I think the best solution for MX Linux is to put all the Fluxbox menus at Transifex. It's the only way to have a good distribution.

See you soon!
Wallon

fluxbox doesn't support this like the other desktops. I think there is a fluxbox application for checking the trash, I guess you could put a link to that on the idesk desktop. (mxfb-trashcheck)

I don't think the option is necessary at all in the menu, but we aren't changing it now. It doesn't even actually disable the all apps menu, just the auto-updating of the all apps menu.

Fluxbox has no desktop trash icon by default.

Search for "trash check" in appfinder
--- or ---
Create a trash icon yourself with MX Idesktool
--- or ---
Just click on the trash icon in the Thunar sidebar

@Wallon
First: the Manual for MX Fluxbox is not the MX Users Manual. Click the Help icon on the dock or press Ctrl + F1
Second: once you look at the MXFB Manual I think this question and others will become clear (hint: Root Menu > Appearance > Desktop icons)
Third: have you looked at any of the (23!) MXFB videos? The most recent "Here comes MX Fluxbox 23" gives an overview that should be helpful even for a non-English speaker.

Thank you Jerry,

Ctrl + F1 > I know this manual.
Root Menu > Appearance > Desktop icons > Add icons should also be translated. Look at my printscreen.
Videos - I know your videos. Your English is good and you don't speak too fast. This is very helpful for people who don't use English every day. Thank you for your dedication.

@Wallon Thanks for noticing this:
Root Menu > Appearance > Desktop icons > Add icons should also be translated. Look at my printscreen.
With a very small number of people working on MXFB and very active app development, it is not always easy to 1) notice and 2) find time to correct such items. Those items do not appear to be in Transifex > mx-idesktool, but I will check further.

Have you edited any of those conky's? I noticed your network conky has a solid black box but the sysinfo doesn't. I assume you have a compositor running?

Here are all 5 manyroads conky's running on my desktop.

@Melber I have a problem with Rofi manager: can you or anyone else replicate this on an installed R3 is it just this machine?

1) launch Rofi manager
2) click on top button to change the current theme

app freezes, in terminal:

Code: Select all

$ mx-rofi-manager
yad: cannot create shared memory for key 1234: File exists

Thanks, that's a relief. What then could be my problem?! I know my battery was very low (8%) at the time, maybe that played a role.

I'm going to test that Live...

It does not happen Live so I reinstalled, this time not keeping the existing home folder, thinking that perhaps some setting in there got goofed up. And now it works normally. Weird.

Hmmn...I just tried changing rofi themes back and forth multiple times on installed rc3. Issue didn't occur, no freezes, themes changed.
Then I did manage to get a freeze with your error message. I had selected MX-iconic theme, not sure if that was the cause or just coincidence. I had selected it several times before without problem. +++edit+++ don't think it was the theme, see update below

The select theme window uses the yad --paned function, which in turn requires a --key definition.

Quick fix is to enter the following in terminal to clear the key

Code: Select all

ipcrm -M 1234
Will look at script to see if I can find something, or at least add the above to clear the key...

+++update+++
Did you by chance have two instances of the theme window running at the same time? That is the only way I can get the error to occur.

Dear @Jaki,

Read my post in this thread, I explain that there is a problem with the "MX Package Installer" to install java and how it should be installed.

After installing java, you can install the language pack for LibreOffice, for example.

Wallon wrote: Mon Jul 24, 2023 5:42 am With "MX Package Installer", I was unable to install java.
I had to clean up the packages with Synaptic.
To install java, you need to install the "default-jdk" package.
This needs to be corrected in "MX Package Installer".

Unfortunately, I can't read images in other languages because I can't copy/paste the text from the image into the DeepL-text translator.

What would this show.
Open terminal as normal user and run:

Code: Select all

mxfb-menu-generator auto

After translating, the first sentence is: You can't install the Figure program

What is the name of the app you are trying to install from flatpak?

Dear @Jaki,

If I enter the fehlix command in a terminal, I get this;

Code: Select all

wallon@msi:~
$ mxfb-menu-generator auto
Please wait, creating menu file - stored in /home/wallon/.fluxbox/submenus/full_menu ...
Menu file created and ready to be used
Do you have a problem with this command in the terminal?
Pity it's not translated into French.

Best regards,
Wallon

I think the display help with arandr should be translated. It's quite a sensitive program for many installations.

Good idea. I usually do these short help texts in 10 different languages, and will repeat that for this one by Final if still possible.

Dear @fehlix,

Thank you for your command "mxfb-menu-generator auto".
I don't have an explanation but I have in the "File Manager Preferences" program, "Shortcuts" tab, all the keyboard shortcuts were in English. After your command line, everything was translated into French!
Really, I thought your command line was reserved for menus.
Bravo!

Kind regards,

@Wallon You can also launch that command from the menu (root menu > all apps > update)
quickshot_230725_123746.png

This is what the menu entry looks like.

Code: Select all

[begin] (MX Fluxbox)
	    [submenu] (All Apps)
            [include] (~/.fluxbox/submenus/full_menu)
            [separator]
            [exec] (Update)  {/usr/bin/mxfb-menu-generator}
            [exec] (Disable) {mx-tweak --other}
   [end]

Dear @fehlix ,

I'm not dreaming, your secret command line "mxfb-menu-generator auto" has an effect on Fluxbox applications.
@Melber noticed as I did that the "Common settings for MX-Linux Fluxbox" application was in English.
After your command line, the application was translated into French.
Do I have to do this manually after every MX installation?
You're really very good. It's magical!
Look at my printscreen, it's in French now! I wasn't dreaming.

Kind regards,

Yes, I had also done that in the menu (root menu > all apps > update) but I had written in this thread that it did nothing in my installation.
I think there's a bug in this menu line in fr_BE.

Here is the modified translation for fr_FR and fr_BE.
It's a modified translation because French speakers aren't as intelligent as English speakers. It's a little joke between you and me.

There are several pitfalls with DEEPL translations.

Example with lines;
1) Click Layout > Save as
You need to check in arandr how the word "Layout" has been translated.

4) Right-click the desktop > Settings > Configure > Startup
Check how the word "Startup" has been translated in the menu. In French, it is the word "Démarrage".
But I mentioned that the file that opens is called "Startup" in English.

Note;
When I installed MXFB, I had saved my "default.sh" file in the path wallon/.screenlayout/default.sh
I always do this when I install a Linux distribution.
I didn't know that with MXFB you had to save it in another directory.
So, this help file is really important and should be translated!

See you soon,
Wallon

There's a post on the Facebook MX Linux group regarding the zenbleed vulnerability (https://www.phoronix.com/news/Linux-Mitigate-Zenbleed). Admin Andy replied that a patch was applied to all current versions MX Linux regarding the amd64-microcode package.

I see the package for Bullseye (https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/amd64-microcode) is dated for July but I've only got April's version.

quickshot_230728_172049.png

Seems Debian has moved this package from [security] [non-free] in Bullseye to [security] [non-free-firmware] in Bookworm (https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/amd64-microcode).

Here is what my debian.list shows in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/.

Code: Select all

# Debian Stable.
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bookworm main contrib non-free non-free-firmware
deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian bookworm main contrib non-free

#debian backports
#deb http://deb.debian.org/debian bookworm-backports main contrib non-free

What's the best way to add the non-free-firmware to my debian-security list?

open up a text editor and add it to the end of the deb security repo definition.

and thanks. I'm adding these to the build system. can't believe we missed that one!

I have never had this.

Code: Select all

Maybe grub has some issues with writing into f2fs file system, when it tries to save last boot choice
into it special file at: /boot/grub/grubenv
Some workaraounds;
* Perhabs try to disable remember last boot-choice (save last select) within MX Boot Options
or
* use a dedicated /boot partition with ext4

Dear @fehlix,

I have deactivated the saving (remember) of the last boot choice.
I no longer get the "sparse..." message.

When I do a sudo update-grub, everything works fine with an f2fs partition.

Code: Select all

wallon@msi:~
$ sudo update-grub
Generating grub configuration file ...
Found theme: /boot/grub/themes/mx_linux/theme.txt
Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-6.1.0-10-amd64
Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-6.1.0-10-amd64
done

I know that MX boot-repair doesn't work with f2fs.
Does this come from Debian or MX Linux?
It's hard to check because with Debian, installation on an f2fs partition is not possible.

For your information, I've done a lot of speed tests on this very good Samsung 400MB/s USB 3.1 stick with Gnome-disk.
With Windows exfat average for reading 400 MB/s
With linux f2fs formatting average for reading 390 MB/s
With linux ext4 formatting average for reading 280 MB/s

When writing, I also found the same differences between the 3 formats. But ext4 formatting is bad because there are peaks at zero due to journaling.
There's an option missing in the MX Installer; it should be possible to remove journaling from an ext4 partition during installation.
Wouldn't it be possible at the end of the installation to deactivate journaling and remove the journal from the ext4 partition?

Kind regards,
Wallon

Dear @fehlix,

Suggestion for developers: simply put these 2 command lines at the end of the installation in MX Installer to remove the journaling from an ext4 partition;

Code: Select all

sudo tune2fs -O^has_journal /dev/( name of the disk for example sda3...)

sudo e2fsck -f -v -C0 /dev/(name of the disk for example sda3...)
Kind regards,
Wallon

no, journalling is a feature of ext4. user's are free to turn it off of course, but we will leave it as designed by default. thanks for the suggestion.

Good. GRUB boot loader does provide read access through it's f2fs.mod(ule) but can't write at this early boot stage onto special made 1K sized /boot/grub/grubenv.

Where did you got the knowledge from that MX Boot Repair won't work on f2fs-installed system?
Any error message?
Just checked it and prepared a f2fs-install, which shows MX Boot Repair works for both main options:
* Reinstall GRUB with grub-loaded onto ESP (EFI System Partion)
mxbr-on-root-with-f2fs-1.jpg
and also with grub-bootloader onto MBR
mxbr-on-root-with-f2fs-2.jpg
and also
* Regenerate GRUB's configuration file (which is /boot/grub/grub.cfg)
mxbr-f2fs-3.jpg

Installing onto a non-journaling file system increases the likelihood the file system would not be recoverable anymore after a something like power loss or hard-reboot.
So that's nothing I would recommend to turn of journaling on ext4 for "/"-root of the installed system.
I think there may have been one major reason to introduce journaling into ext3/4 .
You may use f2fs, but not sure about it's recovery feature compared to ext4. At least, f2fs is indeed fast.

Dear @fehlix,

Thank you very much for the tests with MX Boot Repair.

There was a thread on the antiX forum about f2fs formatting. At the time there were problems using the "Boot Repair" application. I will try again with "MX Boot Repair" as @Adrian has updated the translations on 20 July 2023 of "MX Boot Repair".

The f2fs formatting is the second most used formatting by android smartphones and tablets. Android is also a Linux flavour. Do you know many people who have crashes with their smartphone or tablet because of f2fs formatting?
It's amazing how little support Debian has for f2fs formatting on desktop.

Personally, I'm not afraid to use f2fs formatting because there are no power cuts for my laptops and desktops. There is always a battery to prevent power cuts. I've always had to reinstall my Linux distributions for reasons other than power cuts.

The f2fs formatting extends the life of USB sticks and is very fast.

See you soon,
Wallon

Sorry, nope.
Need to expand the code to translate the tab labels for the combi-boxes and then translate them back before sed on the rasi file. Will get around to it eventually...

just add a hidden column with the untranslated strings or a number. No need try to compare translated strings or to back-translate those.
+++EDIT+++ Opps, sorry scratch it, hide-column is for list not for forms - fields with CB. Probably put the translated into a bash-hash so you get the English to check, something like

Code: Select all

declare -A TABVAL
TABVAL["$(gettext 'none')"]='none'
TABVAL["$(gettext 'filebrowser')"]='filebrowser'
TABVAL["$(gettext 'help')"]='help'
