Dear forum members,

Let’s get the ball rolling for wallpaper (WP) submissions for MX-18!

[UPDATED: Deadline: Friday, 30 Monday, 26 November]


What are we looking for?

The artwork could be photographs, photo manipulations, graphic art including explorations of the MX name or logo, computer-generated images (e.g. forum member skidoo has contributed backgrounds generated using an open source program Evolvotron), etc. You’re restricted only by your creativity.

You can submit your own creations or the creations of other parties for consideration, provided all licences and conditions for distribution are respected. See note at the bottom of this post for information on licences and copyright.


Wallpaper details and how to submit:

1. WP picture size: 1920 x 1200, of sufficiently high resolution at that size.

2. file size per image submitted: no real limitation for the final image if chosen. But in respect of your initially uploaded submissions onto the Community wallpaper page at:

please restrict the size to between 400kB to 1.5 MB per uploaded file. If the actual file size is larger than that, please reduce the file size for the upload, but keep the original high-quality file. If the WP is selected, you can forward the original to us.

I will update you if peregrine has set up a separate MX18 wallpaper sub-page for the submissions. If not, just upload onto the MX17 sub-page for the moment. The team will also be considering artwork already submitted by members, that didn't have the opportunity to be showcased in the previous wallpaper packs.

Even if your submissions aren't selected for the MX18 default WP pack, your wallpapers will still be available for download by the community at the Community website. There were a lot of good ones that didn't make it into the previous releases.


3. You'll need to log in with your account at https://mxlinux.org/user before you can upload your pics. If you haven't created a user account yet, please PM peregrine with your request and an email address, and you'll get a one-time password to set up your own password.


4. for each upload, fill in these relevant details in the text fields:
a) the source of the pic (e.g. yours? someone you know? Found at this URL?)
b) licence terms for the pic
c) if attribution is required under the licence, give details of creator/artist.

If you need to see how different members had previously filled in these text fields, just click on the name of various wallpapers in the MX16 and MX17 sub-pages.


5. post these same details of your submission(s) in this thread as well.


Addition of MX Linux logo on your wallpaper submissions

There is some flexibility here. Obviously if your artwork is already an artistic exploration of the MX Logo or name, there may be no need to further affix the MX logo to one corner, so I leave it to your artistic sensibilities.

If your uploaded pics are smaller-sized lower-resolution images, it may not be necessary for the moment to affix the logo. If your pic is selected, the logo can be affixed at that time to the full resolution image file.

However, for those who do want to affix the logo, here are some resources and instructions. This is the main art resource link: https://mxlinux.org/art

a) we have a 1920x1200 transparent Overlay Sheet for wallpapers that are already in this size.

Go here: https://mxlinux.org/sites/default/files ... 0x1200.zip and download the file.

b) Open your wallpaper in GIMP, then “Open [the Overlay Sheet] As Layer" from the File Menu option in GIMP and affix onto your wallpaper. You can then save/export the combined image as a jpg or png file.

c) If you wish to manually affix the logo to your wallpaper, go to this link:

and download the standalone logo file.

When affixing the said logo on your wallpaper using any graphics program, please take care that the logo position should be high enough that it's not blocked by a horizontal or vertical panel.


Note on licences and copyright:

1. the source/provenance of the WP and terms of any licence attached to it are important, as we don't want copyright disputes with people claiming to be the rightful artist/creator.

2. it would be nice to have photos/art created by forum members themselves, or by people known to the members who are willing to gift it to MX's use without any conditions (giving credit/attribution to the creator/artist is fine).

3. However, we have no problems with work:
a) carrying liberal licences like CC0 provided the source/origin of the WP is not some questionable** site, or
b) under Creative Commons Share Alike licences so long as they do not prohibit derivative work (since we may add the MX logo or otherwise modify the work) or commercial use. Again, attribution is fine - we'll just include the details in a text file in the wallpaper directory.

4. For members contributing suggestions from other sources, you may wish to consider (just some examples):
- Flickr or Unsplash contributors with acceptable licence terms for their pics who, from the picture details provided (e.g. camera used, lens, location, time, date, occasion), are credible as the creator/taker of the pics
- Pixabay, with hundreds of thousands of free images released under CC0 Public Domain Free for commercial use. No attribution required.


**It is true that some people may upload copyrighted material to sites like the above and claim them as their own. The origin of each pic can be checked at https://www.tineye.com/
If it doesn't appear in too many different places, it's more likely to be aboveboard. Use common sense.

It's nice with submissions from the community. I just want to make sure people are aware of Pixabay.

EDIT: Didn't read the whole text, now I see Pixabay was already mentioned. I still think it's a good site though.

Yes, Pixabay is good, as is Unsplash. The butterfly + cocoon photo from MX16 Metamorphosis came from Pixabay, by the way.

However, theoretically people could copy someone else's pics and upload them on these sites, so I added a little caution.

I'm hoping the team can agree on a name for MX18 soon, as that might also help members to suggest some theme-appropriate images from these CC0 sites.

Can you confirm next will be MX18 and not another MX17 point release ?

MX-17 is called "Horizon". Here are some other bold "space" related names:

Aurora
Continuum
Eclipse
Infinity
Latitude
Zodiac

As long as MX-18 isn't named after a big cat, there shouldn't be a problem.

"Continuum" is a good suggestion, since Stretch is still the base

I have a wallpaper ready already for MX-18. Since there is no MX-18 section and it won't let me upload it to the MX-17 section, here it is here.

'continuum' has the advantage of having nearly the same spelling in several languages.

@Mauser: love it. Let me check the website, I may be able to create a new folder, though peregrine is the real power...

I was able to create a new category for mx18, though I am sure peregrine will need to clean up things...

Thanks. I am thinking of making more. The photo is taken by me and I edit the speed limit sign because I hate speed limits because of my heavy size 13EEE.

Jerry, the MX18 category doesn't show up for me. I've refreshed the page, nothing happens.

Meanwhile, I have updated my first post to change the wallpaper submission deadline to Monday, 26 November 2018. This is to synchronise the deadline with that of the conky submissions. Jerry reminded the team that there's not a lot of time left to the end of the year.

It will show in the pull down menu for submissions, I believe, but not on the display part which has to wait until I can get some time from Peregrine.

I assume there's no need for me to re-upload any of my already submitted MX17 wallpapers for MX18?

I took this photo 2 years ago in Ecuador, it is a huge volcano. I used it as WP for a long time and It could be a good WP for MX-18 though.

That statue of Pinocchio is right outside my office. While I was taking the pic, security approached me (they didn't recognize me) and told me pictures were not allowed. I found it so ironic that I couldn't take a picture of a statue the artist stole from Disney. Haha.

Thanks. This is the fave background of my colleagues at the office -- mostly because I took it with my phone. In post processing, I added the more painterly aspects to give it an Ansel Adams sort of look. But again, it's way too location specific for distribution. You kinda have to know it's a US National Monument.

Well, why not just post it on the Community page anyway, for consideration?

It might be chosen or not for MX18; but your pic might appeal to some members.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that. I was just going by what was chosen in the past. The idea is to move the MX product forward. So, it's best to target the primary demographic. I don't feel my backgrounds fit that.
What has struck me most, tho, is the few wallpaper options for children that are included with the distro. (not that I have any that are suitable - lol)
Few, if any distros have these, so it's not an MX specific thing.

People make submissions! We probably would not try for wallpapers for young children, but maybe teenagers (keeping possible gender differences in mind)? Your submission is a great start.

I have a guy's named Charlie Henson's permission to link his entire wallpaper collection from opendesktop.org here for you all. I have used his work on and off for a long time. I have already made some mx linux wallpapers from his work but when I try to upload them I it says wrong password. How can I have the wrong password when I am logged in right now. very weird and confusing.

Nomacs (which I think is pre-installed) will handle simple resizing, and you can adjust the size (in MB etc) when you save it

Another way is to open the pic using GIMP, then choose from the menu: Image >> Scale

In scale, change the X and Y size to 1920x1200. You may need to unlock the "chain" that restricts the scaling/resizing to the X:Y ratio of the existing pic.

Then from menu, choose "Export As" to generate the new resized pic as a png or jpg file.

If you only choose Save or Save As, you will be saving the file as a .xcf file, which is the GIMP working file format.

I finally tested what skidoo had used previously to generate images for wallpapers: evolvotron, which is found in the debian repos.

I kind of like this one, which looks material-design-ish.

Lol. After experiencing another terrifying Thanksgiving with kids here in the US, I'm convinced there is a huge need for self-hypnotic children's wallpapers.
Ones that flash up hypnotic suggestions like "no running" and "no screaming." Haha.

OK then, I've uploaded a 1920*1200 res one to the MX18 page.

I don't often do landscapes, as I'm more interested in what's living in the trees rather than the trees themselves But here's a pic of one of the lakes at my local reservoirs:

Oh, oh. I misunderstood. :-)

I decided not to share those. They were just taken with my lores phone, and I don't think the location would be generic enough to be of broad interest.

But I did go through my MX wallpaper folder, and I found a couple of other photos I took that I'll submit instead, if that's ok. They're more like the other photo backgrounds.

This is one of my faves, but again the resolution is way to low to be distributing.

I had completely forgotten about the OP and that one was supposed to upload to the community site. It's only 9 hours left. I don't have an account. I don't know the specifics regarding licenses so I would have to figure that out. If someone with an account liked the pic I posted please upload it. All in all, I had forgotten about the OP and didn't take this seriously, sorry. I uploaded just for fun, I didn't think more about it. I used the wallpaper for some time and was quite happy with it.

Since the Creative Commons licence attached to the Charlie Henson pic is very general, and the author has given his express consent as long as proper attribution is given, I will just take it that you've submitted this wallpaper for consideration.

Similarly, I will take it that Manzana's Ecuadorian volcano pic has been submitted, since it was taken by him.

If any of these are selected, we will then sort out the sizing and attachment of logo.


I will not include clicktician's Pinocchio and 2 skyline pics in this thread (based on his own reasons). He has already posted his actual 2 submissions on the Community page. Mauser's is also now up.

I look forward to see the official for MX18. I think all MX releases that I have seen had a good default wallpaper. As long as people aren't upset or annoyed by it it's good. I used the Kingfisher wallpaper for quite some time.
