I think it would be useful to get some feedback on what sort of hardware specs MX-14 is running on.
Note only MX-14 and installed to a hard drive ie not in VirtualBox.

inxi -F gives quite a lot of info - but also post to say if it is a laptop/desktop etc.

My main computer is an HP Elitebook 8440P with Core I-5, 4GB RAM and Intel graphics. I can provide specific output later.

My fastest is an Ibuypower CZ-12 with Core I-7, 8GB RAM, and Nvidia 520M graphics. Again, more specific specs later.

I have also booted it up on an old 32 bit Toshiba laptop (circa 2007) I have at home with a Centrino processor, 2GB RAM, and Intel graphics - ran very well.

I do not have any desktops at all and haven't since 2001...

As the sig reads, I am dual booting with Mepis12 beta 2 fully updated.
M12 runs stable for weeks at a time, except the occasional iceweasel crash. ;-}
MX-14 , so far testing.... seems stable so far.

much faster than the old netbook.

I hear that the 3.14 kernel may have support for the hardware in this chromebook. I am not going to install onto the chromebook, but the option for a real os from USB is pretty sweet, in a pinch.

I think I've got the record for a system using MX-14 that's actually being used with it so far (up time) compared to other user posting info so far, versus booting into MX-14 to post the info in this thread. :-)

See the "Info" section at the bottom of the results for a little Dell Inspiron 11Z Netbook in my post here:

http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 30#p337130

Up time was 8 days at the time of the post (and it's longer by now). My wife's great niece (her sister's daughter's daughter) has been visiting with us, and I've been letting her use that netbook, and I setup a user account under MX-14 just for her on it. It doesn't look like she's bothered to reboot it since I gave it to her setup that way. :-)

I do see that it's running hot (noticed it when running inxi - F). So, I probably need to try adding pcie_acpm=force to the kernel boot line to see if that solves it. Here's a post about that option:

My bad. I must have skimmed the results too fast.

In any any event, it's a reliable build for sure.

Our [great] niece (my wife's sister's daughter's daughter) has been using MX-14 with that Dell Inspiron 11Z netbook with no issues at all, and I doubt she's ever used another Operating System besides Windows before in her life, yet she's had no problems adjusting to it.

I did install a few extras on it (for example, I installed Firefox immediately, since I am definitely *not* a Qupzilla fan). But, other than a few minor tweaks I made like that, it's been working great for her.

She's been attending classes on Phlebotomy here locally in Savannah while staying with us (we setup a spare room for her while she's here), and has even been using Firefox for some of the online sessions they've been having via Cisco WebEX (in addition to the classroom based courses she's required to attend that they hold each Saturday, they have online classes during the week). See more about that product here:

http://www.webex.com/

Even something as complex as that product has been working just fine in Firefox under MX-14 (with nothing other than OpenJDK using the Iced Tea extension needed for her to participate in those online sessions her classes require from her). The built in Web Cam on that Dell Inspiron 11Z netbook is even working. I'm impressed.

I've got it setup in a dual boot config with 64 Bit Win 7 (what Dell shipped on it) and MX-14 right now; and I thought I might need to let her use Windows 7 with IE (using special ActiveX based WebEx plugins) to get the WebEx sessions to work with it (as I had no luck getting WebEx to work with Mepis 11 on it; which is one reason I replaced it's Mepis 11 installation with MX-14 to see if MX-14 would work, and it does).

With MX-14 installed, I did not need to resort to letting her use IE with Win 7 for those online sessions, as just using Firefox with MX-14 has been working great with Cisco WebEx (using IcedTea and OpenJDK from Firefox). So, there's been no need for me to jump through hoops and try to set up a limited user account under Win 7 for her to use for the online sessions her classes require during the week instead.

So, great work guys (especially anticapitalista and other developers helping out) for handling all of the hard detail stuff in getting the XFCE desktop and all of the apps to work together with a distro as "lean and mean" as MX-14), as it's running great on a slow single core Celeron CPU like that netbook is using, and it's so easy to use, that someone with *no* linux experience like our Great Niece is having no issues using it.

Thank you to all the people who worked so hard to bring this very useful product to fruition. I'm sure 100 times more went on behind the scenes than is visible here. I've been a happy Mepis user for awhile, but MX-14 seems even more in tune with my needs - great performance on low spec hardware without sacrificing capability or ease of use. I hope it gets the exposure and accolades it deserves.

Give me chance, Jerry - I only finished building it an hour ago, and I haven't connected any speakers yet. There's a few other things to sort out - I'm using the 2 HDDs from an older machine. MX booted fine, but WinXP didn't want to know. Even in safe mode it goes back to the grub screen after 2 secs. I don't need it, so I will get rid of it. First impressions are good, so I will probably add an SDD. Pic attached.

Do you mean it spontaneously reboots? Is that Windows Safe Mode, or the safe boot in grub?

The problem is that it87 module that lm-sensors gets the temps from doesn't correctly identify the thermal sensors in the AMD APUs (A8 & A10 series). You can remedy this by forcing the selection when the module is loaded. Try:

Code: Select all

rmmod it87
modprobe it87 force_id=0x8728
That should provide more correct temps.

The sensors that the k10temp module reads for A8 & A10 APUs are internal readings used to balance use of the cores and they do not correspond to real temperatures. I would blacklist that module so those don't show up.

The only option in the BIOS is to disable Onboard HD Audio. Whichever way this is set - no sound. Also, I have no volume control in the panel.

After looking at everything else, I installed pulseaudio. The Configuration tab gave me 2 x Built-in Audio Profile drop-downs. The first had Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output only, and the second had a dozen options. I turned off the first and set the second to Analog Stereo Output. Sound fine and setting it to Analog Stereo Duplex gave a slightly increased volume. The key to sound was turning off HDMI - with that on, no setting worked.

No luck with that, Tim - rmmod it87 gives "Module it87 is not currently loaded" and it doesn't appear to be present on the system.

That's strange. Maybe the module wasn't loaded but it should be on the system. Is this MX-14? The it87 module is here on my MX-14 system:

Just for fun, I added some benchmarks from the MX-14 bechmarking applications under System -> System profiler and Benchmark.

http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 42#p337142

Added the benchmarks next to the hardware specs - a nice resource for system builders or buyers.
Not sure if ther is any data on these benchmarks in different hardwares?

Sound works out of the box, I have not installed Pulseaudo nor the Pavcontrol.

I have no hard drive installed but that should be next. A SSD would certainly improve boot speed, and a USB 3.0 for use on this motherboard would have make this a much more useful Motherboard, but have a few more slots.

Do I need "lm-sensors?" What's that?

Wikipedia:
lm_sensors (Linux-monitoring sensors), is a free open source software-tool for Linux that provides tools and drivers for monitoring temperatures, voltage, humidity and fans. It can also detect chassis intrusions.

Eh, doesn't sound like anything I need for this old desktop. Just another daemon to eat up a little bit more of an already minimal RAM (512MB, at least until I add some in a few days).

Geriatric PC (2002!), being amazingly "snappy" with MX-14.2
(used to run consecutive versions of *ubuntu for 7 years before
that.) Everything worked OOTB, only Skype required the additional
installation of Pulse Audio and pavucontrol (plus the well-known
little hack for video.)

My OS hard drive decided to take a dirt nap, so I replaced it with the biggest one I had, and decided to put MX-14 on it...so I'm off on an adventure. I'm getting too old for this...

I'm not crazy about this HP laptop because of weird things that happen, such as the above strange spacing. I suspect the AMD CPU is doing this but I'm not 100% sure about this. I've never had an AMD CPU before-- I've only had (and still have them in my other computers) Intel CPUs before the AMD one in this HP laptop (which I don't use much and did inherit from a family member).

this is my alternate machine. Aimed for low power, I just replaced the ancient OCZ 30Gig drive with a nice new Sammy 850 Pro. It is cool and quiet, a quad core at 2.5 GHz and 45 Watts, a WD green drive, fanless power supply, one big slow 120mm case fan all crammed into a tiny cube case.
So what better to load than MX-14.4 !

Easy install, very stable, everything works out of the box, wakes from sleep in 20 seconds, wired eth0, sound. All updated, installed a bunch more programs. So far great.

Mike,

I know I am off topic but this needs to be said: take a moment and think how many of these are unused computers forgotten and stored in the bottom of a hallways or upstairs closets, bottom drawers, under a pile of papers on a desk or corner table, or are sitting in garages exposed to the elements, because they have an infected Microsoft Windows o/s and will not boot or take several hours to boot, when they are viable systems running a modern updated MX-14.4 Linux.

Trying to install in this older video hardware with Kmathern's assistance. Currently in Live mode, and have run out of time to install, and reload all the files backed up. Will try to complete this install in several more weeks, when system is returned to Nevada...

If you can burn a Plop Linux boot CD, you can use it to boot from a flash drive of MX-16 even with the USB 1.1 ports the 4600 has.
