@CharlesV made a nice xfwm theme named PiranhaII a while back. viewtopic.php?t=79560&hilit=piranhaII

I made a fluxbox version
piranhaII.png

Perhaps a candidate to be included as a new home grown style.

I could work with that. Those all came from a single download from tenr, so I don't believe it would ever be overwritten if we removed them.

I wouldn't shed any tears if we dropped all the tenr themes, but maybe other users are fond of one or two of them...

A possible compromise: remove the intersection of Melber and Siamhie choices and provide a link (Users Manual? Tweak Help?) to download the other 200 or however many there are.

I would also like to see the list greatly reduced.

@Jerry3904 @Melber
Trimming it down doesn't bother me and maybe I can put something together to allow the user to select their own style they install.

I just brought back the [stylesdir] to my setup under Appearance. This way tweak can display the system styles and my menu can display my installed styles.
The init file gets updated regardless of which selection I use. Tweak or styles menu.

Code: Select all

[submenu] (Style)
         	[stylesdir] (~/.fluxbox/mystyles)
    [end]

Code: Select all

@Jerry3904 @siamhie @ceeslans @anybodyelse

Do you have one or two personal faves you've made yourself/found elsewhere which you would like to propose for inclusion in the mx-collection?

So far we've got the various comfort styles and piranhaII. Depending on what is decided for the mx25 default theme, I may need to make a couple more to match...

If you all feel it would fit the upcoming mxfb25 release, I would like to share my own Minimo style and tint2 conf

Would need to update (or rather downdate) the styles file though, since I made changes to paths, omitted all window button and bullet pixmaps etcetc . And the tint2 config is filled with non-mxfb executors. Or perhaps @Melber could have a go on that? :)
Below screenshot, running on mxflux. gtk2/3 theme is gruvbox-dark. Also copied its fluxbox toolbar (captured whilst running on fluxuan/devuan) into the screenie.
Please let me know if this will do.

Going back to @Melber's list, I propose that we remove all except his "can stay" to which I suggest including one other from his "indifferent" list. We can somewhere point to the download location for all the others from tenr if necessary. That would give us 8 total:
bota_black
bora_blue
bora_green
debian-blue
LemonSpace << I suggest adding back b/c unusual color in collection
MerleyKay
Squared_For_Debian
Squared_green
To that the others we are talking about can be added to produce a much improved style list for mxfb2025

a note on fluxbox styles:

most of the fluxbox styles are part of the fluxbox package. so to remove them, fluxbox will need to be repackaged. I presume you will want to have a separate build of fluxbox for mx25, as otherwise you could remove a theme in use already on mx23.

we already package fluxbox ourselves, so I doubt its a huge deal. Just mentioning it.

Why were we asked for our favorites (post #18) if they aren't going to be included. There's three Bora styles and two Squared in this default list.
I think Peak Ocean is more modern looking than the Squared ones. Just saying.

@siamhie
To hopefully clarify things, fluxbox styles are coming from two sources.

Fluxbox itself brings along the big list of ugly, which I proposed to cull down. (This will require rebuilding fluxbox). Jerry's list is only contains those "fluxbox native" styles which we will still include.

Fluxbox native styles
bota_black
bora_blue
bora_green
debian-blue
LemonSpace
MerleyKay
Squared_For_Debian
Squared_green

MX adds additional styles via the mx-fluxbox package. https://github.com/MX-Linux/mx-fluxbox/ ... box/styles
That's where I imagined the user created styles would go. At present this mx list looks like this

MX Styles
MX -comfort
MX-comfort-dark
MX-comfort-plus
MX-comfort-plus-dark
Peak-Ocean
Minimo
PiranhaII
+ potential new style to match MX25 default theme if it's changed

The styles from both lists are available to the user after installation.

OK. What would you recommend to new users who might download from outside sources like tenr, pling, box-look, xfce-look, etc. to place the styles/theme? Default location (~/.fluxbox/styles).

New users will have to create the folder but tweak doesn't see fluxbox styles in that location.
Tested with this download. FluxModern https://www.box-look.org/p/2078969

Code: Select all

╔═[siamhie@flux23]═[15:31 28/01/25]════════════════════[~/.fluxbox/styles/FluxModern]

-rw-r--r-- 1 siamhie siamhie 6191 Aug 12 2023 theme.cfg
Best to keep them in the styles folder and make sure that new users know that when downloading from other sources.

True. I have two styles folders that I use. The default styles folder (styles) and my personal styles folder (mystyles) that I access from the Appearance menu.
This way I can quickly copy over my favorites from my data drive that has all of the styles from tenr's web site extracted (477 styles to choose from).

for what its work, mx-tweak checks two areas for fluxbox styles. these are classic areas and that's where I would expect any fluxbox styles to be

1. /usr/share/fluxbox/styles
2. $HOME/.fluxbox/styles

In the world of fluxbox, it's referred to as styles. They only change the menu, window and toolbar.
DE themes might also change icons, cursors and more.
What is a Style?

Styles, sometimes referred to as Themes, are a graphical overlay for the fluxbox(1) window manager.
If you wanted to get to know fluxbox, the styles would be the look of the look and feel.

- mx-ease
- mx-ease-dark
(both with minor updates to previous versions)
- matcha-mx
- matcha-mx-dark
(matching @asqwerth's theme-in-progress)

FYI, mx-tweak in trixie now has a checkbox to show or hide "legacy" fluxbox styles. By default the style are searched in the following folders

1. /usr/share/mx-fluxbox/styles/
2. $HOME/.fluxbox/styles/
3. /usr/share/fluxbox/styles/

the last the is the location of all the existing legacy styles. by default those are not shown.

If styles of the same name exist in multiple folders, styles will be applied when selected in the following order of precedence

$HOME/.fluxbox/styles/
/usr/share/mx-fluxbox/styles/

2. $HOME/.fluxbox/styles/
3. /usr/share/fluxbox/styles/

the last the is the location of all the existing legacy styles. by default those are not shown.

If styles of the same name exist in multiple folders, styles will be applied when selected in the following order of precedence

$HOME/.fluxbox/styles/
/usr/share/mx-fluxbox/styles/
/usr/share/fluxbox/styles/
Sounds good.

Am I right in assuming the mx styles will be moved from mx-fluxbox repo to mxfb-styles repo and installed to /usr/share/mx-fluxbox/styles ?
If so, the mx-comfort tool (creates a new style based on mx-comfort) in mxfb-accessories will need a little fiddling.

@Jerry3904 is working out details about where the new fluxbox styles location will ultimately be. I will adjust mx-tweak to match whatever is set up.

@Melber probably going to be /usr/share/mxflux/styles/

@Jerry3904

mxfb-styles install file has

Code: Select all

modern/* usr/share/mxflux/styles
traditional/* usr/share/mxflux/styles
Shouldn't it be

Code: Select all

modern/* usr/share/mxflux/styles
traditional/* usr/share/fluxbox/styles
or all all styles now supposed to end up in the same directory?

Thanks for looking at it. They are supposed to all end up in the same directory. No user will know what to think and the coding I understand gets weird or something.

I will be upgrading that before the weekend with more license info--and I asked DO to try to filter out the credits file and some "folder"--so if you see anything else please let me know.

am I understanding this right?

- nothing will be installed by default in ~/.fluxbox/styles. If user saves a style there it will show in mx-tweak.
- mxfb-styles/modern/* (our user styles) and mxfb-styles/traditional/* (our curated list of legacy styles) both get installed to usr/share/mxflux/styles and appear in mx-tweak.
- fluxbox is still going to install it's big bag of ugly to /usr/share/fluxbox/styles, which will only show in mx-tweak if the "legacy" checkbox is checked.

@Jerry3904 I think you need to go over the contents of mxfb-styles/traditional. It currently has a lot more legacy styles in it than in our list here https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 68#p807368. The three tenr styles aren't there. There's also a "styles" folder containing the readme.md which seems odd.

User styles will show up and have precedence over any other version.

I created the shirt list from your post, on phone ATM so can't identify. By checking the little box above the window the user sees every Tenner style installed instead of out curated list.

From here: https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 06#p807106.

@Melber I also see now that you were thinking we should point to the full list: /usr/share/fluxbox/styles/ Makes sense, will include next version--and that will answer the question from @siamhie about his favorites.

Not so much my thinking as my perhaps muddle-headed understanding of DO's post about revised tweak and how mxfb-styles is set up. Or has DO got a wonder filter to differentiate between mx themes and curated legacy themes when they're all located in in the same directory?

I don't need to differentiate. styles are styles and as long as they have different names there is no issue (and they do, if they are in the same directory). duplicate names are removed from tweak's list. styles are only sourced from one location, with the following order of preference in the case of multiple versions.

$HOME/.fluxbox/styles
/usr/share/mxflux/styles
/usr/share/fluxbox/styles

so if a style is in both /usr/share/mxflux and /usr/share/fluxbox, the /usr/share/mxflux style is the one used. or if a user as a style of the same name in $HOME, that will be used regardless of the other two directories.

@dolphin_oracle
so by default tweak shows all styles in $HOME/.fluxbox/styles and /usr/share/mxflux/styles (regardless whether they're mx or legacy styles)?

and with checked checkbox tweak shows all (legacy) styles in /usr/share/fluxbox/styles?

That last change hasn't happened yet, just pushing today the updated mxfb-styles @dolphin_oracle

yes.

mx-tweak on bookworm actually searches all three locations as well, but does not present the checkbox to filter the old styles. I didn't want to change the behavior for existing users mid stream.

Some final items for this thread:

1.@Melber and I have been discussing in camera the effect of DO's excellent new Tweak, and have concluded that there is now no need to include any of Tenner's traditional themes in the MX list, since a click in the box will show all of them.

2. @siamhie Could you please select one of the styles you listed and get it to me along with the entry for the attribution file as soon as convenient?

Code: Select all

Style name:

URL/Source:
Thanks.
