Driver ver.304 is available for my card from the Nvidia site, but I don't know where to start.
Is it possible to solve?
Thank you

The only problem is that 304 was available for the last time for Debian 9 "Stretch" ... Therefore MX 18.3

The support was stopped due to Nvidia Corporation's decision (but not Linux / Debian / MX ... )

Anyway, this thread might be interesting / useful .

We are still supporting MX 18.3 as much as possible, which does support the 304 Nvidia driver for your card. It will be good for at least a couple more years.

See viewtopic.php?f=108&t=57730

BTW the Nvidia driver won't buy you anything performance-wise on such an old GPU. It's not as though you'll be able to play Steam games anyway. You may as well just use the open source Nouveau driver.

I checked in a virtualbox and my guide at viewtopic.php?p=638080#p638080 should also work for 32-bit

that's ok, the same should happen if you apply step 4
note that I updated step 7 (to disable the compositor)

Wait a minute, I'm stopped at step 5 :-)

I don't understand this:
but another option is to only remove the debian default stretch repo and the mx stretch repo, and to keep the debian security repo (as there have been some recent security updates for xserver-xorg-core, so not unthinkable that there could be more updates in the future)

if you want to keep the debian security repo for stretch, then you change your /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nvidia-temp.list file to just:

Code: Select all

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian-security stretch/updates main contrib non-free

the second, if you chose to keep the debian-security repo
maybe I shouldn't give people multiple options and just decide what I think is best...

Thanks, put the second code in /etc/apt/preferences.d/nvidia.

Should it be installed?

it should be in the menu, in Italian it's called 'MX Rifiniture'

Rebooting, and I hope it will work, because I haven't tested it on an actual nvidia device, but it has worked previously for someone using antix. But if you want to be on the safe side, then you can make sure you have a live USB ready (which is always a good idea to have lying around).

@Lilium23 In fact, what I meant was just install 18.3 . Don't consider it "old" , it's even a bit lighter, mature, still being supported.. I was still going on with 18.3 till a few months ago (and still keep my snapshots).

Ok, I know, you wouldn't like to remove 19.4 and install 18.3 . I'd do this: Just open a little place (8-10GB) and install it there, then try Nvidia driver there easily. At least to see if it makes a noticeable change. (As JayM told, sometimes it's not worth it on old cards... So, you'll have tried easily).

(Meanwhile , my current installation is about 5GB with everything needed, on a 8GB partition, like the previous ones.. I just keep the partition clean, that's all :) )

( If you agree, here are the latest ones )

Ok Huckberryfinn :-)
I can try on another disk where 19.4 is installed and overwrite with 18.3.
From 18.3 the nvidia driver must be installed by MX package installer and abort the installation as recommended here?
I need the driver to run kodi mediacenter better, I don't need it to play :-)
Thanks
EDIT: Excuse me: do I have to download 18.3 from here or from your link?

No, just simply (and particularly) "Nvidia Driver Installer" from Menu :)
Lilium23 wrote: Sun May 30, 2021 2:48 pmdo I have to download 18.3 from here or from your link?
Whichever you like. That one is the original release of 18.3 (as here), and the one I gave is the updated iso (snapshot) (in fact I chose that deliberately as it requires less updates)
___________________________________________________

Just: The default kernel is 4.19.

And 4.15 (also antiX 4.9 ) were proven to work with 304.xx . So, before installation you can do this:

MX Package Installer (4.15 must be in Popular Apps tab) , install that,

Reboot with it (via "Advanced Options" on Grub)

Finally "Nvidia Driver Installer" from Menu.

(Then you can make the 4.15 default from "MX Boot Options" with 1 click :) )

For the 304xx driver, you may need to do something extra on MX18, as I explain at viewtopic.php?p=616973#p616973

Did you try this one or installing with the default 4.19 ?

I did the whole procedure, and the driver installed.
On reboot, the only kernel that gained access to the system was the 4.15.0-1-686-pae i686 kernel.
But the system continues to use the noveau driver.
I add system logs.

On Grub menu hit E (when 4.15 is highlighted) and add

Code: Select all

modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
(the line at the bottom that begins with linux... ) after ... ro quiet splash ...

... ro quiet splash modprobe.blacklist=nouveau

hit F10 to go on boot.

Also, since you didn't face a black screen maybe you didn't need to do that, but if there's such a file, delete :

added modprobe.blacklist = nouveau f10 for reboot, screen with big icons appears, and keep using nouveau.
In the X11 folder I don't find xorg.conf files, but xorg.conf.in

It seems to me Nvidia just appeared "as if" it was installed ... and no, that one's another file...

(Meanwhile it needs to be exactly as above, without spaces)

Yes, i done without spaces.
Nvidia server setting appears in the dash, but it always uses nouveau as a driver.

Menu => "MX Boot Options" : into "Kernel Parameters" box (with a space after the others... ) :

Code: Select all

rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau rdblacklist=nouveau
Apply. (In fact just one is enough; they're similar, this is the "crazy way" :D )

Code: Select all

sudo echo -e 'blacklist nouveau\nblacklist lbm-nouveau\nalias nouveau off\nalias lbm-nouveau off\noptions nouveau modeset=0' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-blacklist.conf

Is this command enough?

Even just this is enough rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau

:)

(But if that doesn't work, apply all, that will also create a blacklist file and update initramfs .. to make it sure)

So, I'll list the various steps:
in the boot menu in the kernel parameter box, I entered this:

Code: Select all

quiet splash rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau rdblacklist=nouveau
I performed the remaining steps from the terminal, reboot, but the resolution is with large icons, from system info it reads:

Code: Select all

Graphics:
  Device-1: NVIDIA G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300]
vendor: Toshiba America Info Systems driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0
  Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: nouveau,vesa
If it is not possible I leave it alone, since the kodi that I need does not start at all.
For kodi I wanted to install proprietary drivers.

Thanks for all your interest :-)

That's normal because it worked at least to stop nouveau as the driver , but this time it's with no driver and xorg is with vesa ...

Device-1: NVIDIA G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300]
vendor: Toshiba America Info Systems driver: N/A bus ID: 01:00.0
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: nouveau,vesa

So, we can force it for the last time to load Nvidia both as graphics driver and for xorg (at least to see what happens).

So, if Nvidia driver was installed thoroughly even these wouldn't be required.

On that black screen (after logging in manually)

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf.old

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -uk all

Code: Select all

sudo reboot
these will just turn it back to previous state for now (with neither Nvidia nor Nouveau)

Now (sadly) there are just 2 options:

To retry nvidia installation (though it looks hopeless)

Or remove those blacklists (boot options and .conf file) and turn back to Nouveau ...

The weird thing is that yours is on the list of supported cards by driver 304.137 .

huckleberry, , that's not a problem :-) If it doesn't work, I'll reinstall 19.04 and drop everything.

@Lilium23 maybe all you need to do is disable compositing.
(Yes, you did that when trying with 19 but not this time, so it must be on by default).

There's obviously something preventing it to be loaded because it looks installed, also no errors when installing, also successfully stopped Nouveau from being loaded .. So, there's just a tiny thing that prevents Nvidia.

Before doing any changes, just uncheck that, reboot and see .

So, the last thing to try: Install again with Nvidia Driver Installer (when still compositing is off)

Or, first another, older kernel, say antiX 4.9 from MXPI Popular Apps (that will also be lighter or more suitable for older hardware) then boot with and install.

the kernel did not install; I started nvidia driver installer, rebooted, and this time Nvidia is there :-)
Also installed kodi, it works fine.
The inputstream adaptive library is missing, but I see this later.
Too bad the driver is not available on MX 19.4 :-(

Just, when everything's fine, don't forget to run MX Snapshot and create your own iso, keep it somewhere.

Note : to boot on live session you need to type xorg=nvidia in boot options. If you like you can make it permanent but this time you'll need to do the reverse (delete that) to boot on another -especially non-nvidia- pc .

Also: I was going to tell you to try both 1 and 2 (Nvidia D. Installer: "Volete controllare il repo MX Test per una versione successiva?") earlier, then I thought such an old driver would already be same versions without alternative.. But one is ..-6 and the other -7 ..

You're welcome, enjoy.

Ok huckleberry :-)

Basically, I was interested in Nvidia for KODI media center,
without that it runs jerkily, except if I don't start kodi in separate environment.
The only flaw, known that kodi in 18.3 is stopped at ver.17, in this version the inputstream adaptive library is not present.
KOdi serves me like hotcakes :-)
In this 18.3 release, I can use kodi in mid-service :-)
