Both my MX Linux 18.3 and 19.2 versions show that I have Thunderbird 68.12.0. I believe that Thunderbird is now available in v. 78.3.2.
Do I have to be patient and wait till MX Updater proposes the new version, or am I left to my own devices in finding a way to update Thunderbird?

Just install it as a flatpak, it is v78.3.2
You can also upgrade.

Is there a specific reason you need that newer version?

The compose window is better. I have v. 78 installed on a Microsoft Windows PC and it also seem to be faster, particularly the Usenet newsreader.
But I supposed I could live with v. 68, too...

You can file an official request and see if someone wishes to do it. You can do that in the package requests forum.

I see there actually is a version 78 in the Debian security repo, but the mx repo uses a so-called 'epoch' to overrule that and have version 68 as the preferred version anyway (version 2:68.12.0-1mx19+1 in mx repo versus 1:78.3.1-2~deb10u2 in Debian security repo). So I'm guessing the MX repo team has (or had) a good reason to prefer version 68. I would wait for someone more knowledgeable to chime in on that.

There is no direct "upgrade" from 68 to 7x in Thunderbird. The Thunderbird website discusses that there were too many differences, lots os add-on's that were not brought over etc, and there is a lot of discussions about what you need to do to upgrade - manually. So it would make sense to have 68 be 'the one' but have access to 78.
When I made the switch a while back, I had numerous issues and ended up rolling back until a later date. (I do have ONE machine on 78, the rest I have left in 68 mainly so that I can keep my addon's I prefer. )

Personally I find T'bird a necessary evil. My arch machines are at v 78+ and here I'm on 68. My data files are kept in either IMAP or archived and shared from Dropbox. Things work pretty smoothly, in the main. Personally I would not use snaps or flatpak for email unless you want to keep your email all on a single machine. Those self-contained (containerized?) environments are tough to synch across various divergent platforms.

Ok, I'll keep on using v. 68.
Just out of curiosity, is it possible to install two distinct (separate) versions of Thunderbird, or any other software for that matter?
Re: Thunderbird

It is possible actually. I had an issue with a 6x version and used a 7x version to get around it. Once I found exactly what the issue was, then I wanted to roll back to 6x. I found that I could load BOTH versions, however, I could not use the same profile in both versions as the 7x would add some additional profile info and cause a problem - simple to get around, but a little tricky.
I did find that I could create an entirely NEW profile in a different location and then I had both up and running. Note - the Thunderbird Profile.ini is the problem, so you have to ... play around a little to get them both operational, but it can be done. (Not sure I would maintain that for long as something *will* bite you there.. but it is possible.

maybe because you used the flatpak version? with flatpak you can have a 'normal' and a flatpak version, the normal one will have its data in ~/.thunderbird, the flatpak one in ~/.var/app/org.mozilla.Thunderbird

Update: these instructions are already obsolete, as you can now install version 78 from MX Test
If someone really wants to use the latest Thunderbird version from the Debian Security repo, instead of installing a (huge) flatpak, you can make a file called /etc/apt/preferences.d/thunderbird_from_debian_security with the following content:
Code: Select all
Package: thunderbird* lightning* calendar-google-provider
Pin: release o=Debian
Pin-Priority: 1001
For the lazy among us, you can use just this one command to create the file + content:
Code: Select all
echo -e 'Package: thunderbird* lightning* calendar-google-provider\nPin: release o=Debian\nPin-Priority: 1001' | sudo tee /etc/apt/preferences.d/thunderbird_from_debian_security > /dev/null
Then you can do
Remarkably, apt will tell you it will downgrade thunderbird but that's because of the peculiar version numbering.
But of course I can't guarantee any smooth transition from 68 to 78 and please consider doing a backup of your ~/.thunderbird folder.
If you'd want to revert to the MX version, remove the preferences file with:
Code: Select all
sudo rm /etc/apt/preferences.d/thunderbird_from_debian_security
and then again

I also used the download from the website - no flatpak As I recall, I saved the tar contents to a different folder, leaving the original in tact. Then ran it from that new location. (ie 6x version as installed, 7x version folder saved to a different location - from the tar file. )
And I do agree SAVE your original thunderbird folder - AND your profile mail area BEFORE you do ANYTHING :-)

One man's improvement is another man's regression.
I live in my email/news client, and the last thing I want is anything changed up. I'm using v31.7 from a .deb file I've saved from the old Mepis 11 days. I have a bunch of custom buttons I was able to create on that version for navigating nntp news and they don't work on later versions.
Now you kids get off my lawn.

That depends on where you put the files. I have never tried to use two versions.
I think all you would need to do is extract the tar files to different folders. They can be in home or /opt or wherever you want.
Then any launchers or .desktop files must have the correct path to the executable file for each version.
Since I only want the latest version I extract it to
/opt. It makes its own folders there and a new version overwrites existing files. Then I make a simlink to the executable file
/opt/thunderbird/thunderbird in
/usr/local/bin. That way the launchers or terminal command is just
"thunderbird". I do the same thing with Firefox.

Good night, folks.
After Thunderbird 78.3.1 had become available in the MX test repo,
- I backed up my Thunderbird user profile (~/.thunderbird)
- Upgraded from Thunderbird 68.12.0 to 78.3.1 using MX Package Installer
Code: Select all
2020-10-16 22:05:17 upgrade thunderbird amd64 2:68.12.0-1mx19+1 2:78.3.1-2mx19+1

2020-10-16 22:05:16 upgrade lightning-l10n-de all 2:68.12.0-1mx19+1 2:78.3.1-2mx19+1
2020-10-16 22:05:16 upgrade lightning all 2:68.12.0-1mx19+1 2:78.3.1-2mx19+1
- All went perfectly fine. No trouble at all.
- Admittedly the only extension in use here is Lightning. And the German language packs.
- Very brief system summary:
Code: Select all
$ inxi -Sxxx
System: Host: unimatrix3 Kernel: 4.19.0-12-amd64 x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 8.3.0 Desktop: Xfce 4.14.2 tk: Gtk 3.24.5
info: xfce4-panel wm: xfwm4 dm: LightDM 1.26.0 Distro: MX-19.2_x64 patito feo February 15 2020
base: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
- Now I am eagerly waiting for Thunderbird 78.4.0 to become available in the MX test repo.

Cheers,

Hi, folks.
As can be told from my posts, that list, which Thunderbird related packages have been updated, from 68.12 to 78.3.1
[1] and from 78.3.1 to 78.4.0
[2], all through MX Package Installer from the MX test repo (no flatpaks involved), on my MX 19.2 systems, it is only
Thunderbird and
Lightning (both plus German language support).
Nothing, absolutely nothing has been broken for me, when making the big leap forward from 68.12 to 78.3.1 here. At least I have not noted anything, which had worked before and stopped doing so on 78.3.1 and 78.4.0.
--
My personal point of view:
Based on the official "Fixes" lists of the Thunderbird versions 78.3.0, 78.3.1, 78.3.2, 78.3.3 and 78.4.0:
my impression is that
+ early Thunderbird 78.x releases introduced a number of issues
+ some of which may have affected users specifically, who had upgraded from 68.x to 78.x
+ but starting with 78.3.1 and more so with 78.4.0 most of these issue should be history
+ nonetheless users keep on picking on the initial issues introduced by early Thunderbird 78.x releases (pre-78.3.1)
+ without realizing that quite a few bugs & deficiencies have been resolved by now.
Best regards,
Karl

OK. this is weird ... according to my update history ... no thunderbird update took place... and I am NOT on the test repos either...
Its like the machine decided to USE 78 and not 68 .. (I had both loaded on this machine, but have been using 68 for months and months....
Something in yesterdays update caused the wrong one to launch as 'email client default' ?

No. This machine is purely on the regular repos. I had downloaded Thunderbird 7x from the mozilla site back in April ? and tried it, then backed out as too much was broken. So, I had 68 running and linked as my default etc.
However, 7x was installed here. Not sure how, but it seems like something switched the default from 68 to 78 and then it updated via the TB updater when I launched it.

Checked from inside my running Thunderbird 78.4.0 on the Thunderbird Addons page.
- Calendar Tweaks 8.3 (Feb 2020): no longer compatible.
- gContact Sync 3.1.7 (June 2019): no longer compatible.
- Phoenity Icons 3.0b5 (Oct 2020): installed on Thunderbird 78.4.0 here.
- Provider for Google calendar 78.0.1 (Aug 2020): compatible
- XNote++ 2.3.1 (Aug 2019): no longer compatible
Potential alternatives? - Not sure, because I have never used the now incompatible addons:
+ Open Google Calendar 1.5 (Feb 2020): compatible
+ QNote 0.6.3 (Oct 2020): compatible
Not sure whether all the incompatible addons are needed on Thunderbird 78.4.0 still or whether their goals can be achieved without them.
Hope it helps a bit at least.

Thanks Karl. yup.. been working on all those.
I have now added tbSync and its CalDav addon's which brought my googla calendar and contacts back up . (Dupes with the OLD provider, but easy enough to resolve once I know for sure its all working ;- )
Calendar tweaks and xnote I can live without - Dont see direct replacements yet.
Phoenity Icons isnt working, that is on my list next.
Other than phoenity, my custom CSS, and my Glass Black theme not working properly in preferences (all dark pages!), I believe I am up. All rules good, all folders still all good (21 gb of email !! years and years !) ...
Gonna try to ride it out if I can - looking go so far (knock on wood) ... Would like the improvements of 78... so... onward !

Some Notes for anyone interested:
- MUST remove the OLD providers before attempting to load any new services (ie Google providers, xnote, phoenity etc etc. ) Once old addon's have ben removed, then restart TB and can install and use the new addon's.
- Custom CSS is a little different in some areas, but 90% seemed to go right in.
- Qnote looks like a great replacement, however sadly old Xnotes are lost :-(
- Glass Black theme appears to be a mess :-( ( works - but a mess )

but the problem is that version 68 is vulnerable while the latest 78 is not...
maybe security fixes will get backported to version 68 though

Security is one thing, but a major worry for many is the change of email account's profile. If you don't like the upgrade, downgrade to 68, but no longer access to the account(s). There are guidelines but still, cause a worry that emails are lost.
I upgraded from 78.3 to 78.4, things look fine.

Looks like FF just got another security patch pushed to 10.6.

What does FF have to do with TB (other than the same creators?)

When you look at those security issues, they're often for both firefox and thunderbird

Yes it was posted here since the issue overlaps between FF and TB, both projects are rather closely related.

Not for me. Maybe it will propagate to other mirrors later?

Keeping my fingers crossed that Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar will keep working as add ons. I need those.

Yes, at least Provider for Google Calendar continues working, though I've found it has an issue properly loading in my calendars and tracing the time bar throughout the day. I can load the calendars by clicking unview/view for each and every one and likewise manually reset the time bar by closing the calendar and re-opening it.

Hi,
for Lightning: As far as I understand this is now integral part of Thunderbird 78. Here with Thunderbird 78.4 calendar seems to work also with Google calender connected via the most recent Provider for Google Calendar 78.0.1

This is what I got in my mail a while ago. I have it working
Hey Yahoo Member,
Head’s up: As of 20 October 2020, Yahoo Mail will no longer support third-party applications (such as third-party email, calendar, or contact applications) using outdated sign-in methods. That just means if you’re still signing in to your Yahoo account via another email application, like the default email application on your phone, you need to make some quick updates to ensure your mailbox isn’t interrupted.
Here are your options:
Option 1: We recommend that you access your email using our free Yahoo Mail app for iOS and Android or simply go to mail.yahoo.com to access Yahoo Mail on the web.
Option 2: Keep your current, non-Yahoo app, BUT follow a few steps to get it to sync with our secure sign-in method. The steps vary across different email applications, but in most cases, you will have to remove your Yahoo account from the app and then add it back again to update the sign-in security. Use the links below to follow the specific steps for your current application:
iOS Mail
Gmail
Samsung Mail
Others
Option 3: You can generate a one-time, unique password that will allow you to sign in to your account using your non-Yahoo email application. Once created, this password will continue to allow your app to securely sync your Yahoo email unless you sign out (or are signed out) from your app. You can find instructions on how to do this here.
Questions? Please visit our help page. If you’ve already made the necessary changes for your account, we appreciate the quick action!
Yours in your inbox,
The Yahoo Team
I chose option three, which leads you here:
https://uk.help.yahoo.com/kb/new-mail-f ... 15241.html
Which says:
Sign in and go to your Account security page.
Click Generate app password or Manage app passwords.
Select your app from the drop down menu and click Generate.
Follow the instructions below the password.
Click Done.
Use this app password and your email address to sign in to your email app.

While I'm quite sure that this issue has been solved, along with a lot of other good information being put out there from other users, I figured I would put in my 2 cents worth. I've been using MX Linux for a little while, and in the Package Installer, it is obvious that Debian does not consider anything past version 68 of Thunderbird to be stable, so it will not be updated until that changes. Mine has not been, either. However, if you cruise into the MX Test Repo tab, you will see the option to upgrade to version 78. I tried this out. I didn't uninstall anything. I just installed it from the MX Test Repo list, and it updated my Thunderbird to 78.4.0, without any change in my settings. So far, I'm not having any problems with the new version. Looks a little different, but works the same. And I didn't use a terminal. That's why I love MX Linux. Use a terminal if you want, but this is the first distro I've tried that I have yet to need to use a terminal on.

I use Yahoo IMAP (no AT&T account) and had a lot of timeout and authentication errors until earlier this year.
I always locally install the latest version from Thunderbird's web site.
I don't know if Yahoo changed something on their end or Thunderbird fixed something in versions after 69 or so but I haven't had a problem in months. Sometimes some messages appear slow to download but I don't have any other problems any more.

You need to search for yahoo thunderbird on the forum. I posted why this is.

It's still broke here so I've posted in at&t & mozilla/thunderbird to see if I can get any bites.
I have also tried a fresh 78.4 in a VM with similar results.

I did get it to work once on my desktop with 68.12 and then never again. So I tried 78.4 in a VM and it seems to be reliable. Looks like it's time to upgrade.
What a PITA. - Mike

Which helped me too. I have a second email account with Yahoo as a back-up and it had stopped working so I removed it in Thunderbird. I re-added it yesterday and it seems to be OK now. I never saw the notification because I never use Yahoo webmail, only Thunderbird.

I never used webmail either, but I was bombarded with mails from yahoo about this which came in in TB still.

There is no need to report each available update. We have devs that monitor this stuff.

It was not a report, it was a point of discussion. Reports are filed as bugs using normal protocol.
