New name for the mx-installer

Posted: Wed Apr 11, 2018 1:26 pm
by dolphin_oracle
There is an effort under way re-unify the installer code base between antiX and MX, and give the installer some new tricks both on the user side and the developer/maintainer side.

But

We need a new package name for the installer, as they are currently

antix-installer

and

mx-installer

Creative names, right?

anyway, Please post any name suggestions you may have. Its not strictly speaking limited to function, it could have a totally strange name, as with “ubiquity” or “calamares”. The idea is to have one name, without the “antiX” or “MX” lablels.

Just be aware that this is a brainstorming excerise, and that there is no guarantee that we will use any name submitted. But believe me, naming ideas are welcome!

Thanks.

In economics, the Gini coefficient is a measure of statistical dispersion intended to represent the income or wealth distribution of a nation's residents, and is the most commonly used measurement of inequality.
Now Genie ("A fictional magical being that is typically bound to obey the commands of a mortal") OOTH could be "GeniE is Not an Installer"

Pretty bad names in my opinion if you lack the "Install" icon on desktop for some reason you won't even know where to look for, how would you know calamares has anything to do with installation?

But yeah, if you have a "Install" icon on the screen and in menu, the name is pretty much irrelevant, it could be very well be... *pause for effect*... minstall.

Mantis Shrimp, for the most awesome and badass creature in the sea. Destroys calamares and all those other wimpy sea creatures mentioned previously. Also called the "thumbsplitter shrimp" for some odd reason. Somehow was never made a character in "The Little Mermaid", Sebastian would have kicked butt as a MS.

thinking a lot of d.s today. work-in "dolphin" if you like. ddoo. dedicate disk of operation. define device of operation. installer. determine declare describe dedicate delegate distribute duplicate design disseminate diffuse disperse delineate divide disk device où operation .
it will even delete if so desired. designate type of install. Users providing a customised iso will appreciate thinking duplicate and distribute. the installer distributes. It makes good decisions by default; the installer is now capable of doing a great number of operations to accommodate accurate installation defined.

And since some of the names now being proposed don't even include the word "installer", maybe call it "warren" or "woodford".

I vote for these, because they are neat and intuitive and all that. Also very translatable. (Some of the subtle wordplays, while it works in English, make me headdesk as a translator. :frustrated: )

1. I do not like cutesy names, (personal preference)
2. Those are all applications with the exception of XFCE and are not MX/antiX packages.
3. XFCE is not a cutesy name.

Other than that have at it.

EDIT: And a new user asks himself, "How do I install this?" Cheetah? If install is in the name it is more obvious.

Despite my earlier tongue-in-cheek suggestions, I don't think that linux veterans will much care what it's called, so I'm assuming that this exercise is really aimed at new users. In that vein, how about "The Disk Magician", which I think implies other functions besides just installing the operating system.

The user will see an icon on the desktop labelled Installer or MX installer or antiX installer. That is not going to change.
(I very much doubt anyone will install the installer on a live/installed system so it doesn't matter what the package/app is called)

Renaming the application, as I see it, is an attempt to encourage other linux devs to use our installer (if they wish) and even more importantly, contribute to adding features that are missing.

Added: For example, this is what is on the Debian debs page about the calamares installer
Calamares is a distribution-independent installer framework.

It provides a graphical installer that can be used with nearly any distribution. This package is suitable for live media on Debian-based systems, and won't be of any particular use on and already installed system.

You will likely want to provide your own config files to match your distribution, reading the Calamares documentation will guide you through that process.
