We make so many mistakes that we have gotten good at fixing them quickly. :-)

The md5sum of MX-14-RC2.iso is:
It was posted on the download site in the file MX-14-RC2.iso.md5. If you download via bittorrent then there is no need to check the md5 because bittorrent does it for you. It has to check md5 sums (or the equivalent) of every block in order to prevent malicious people from poisoning the torrent with bogus data.

RC2 boots straight to the desktop without cheatcodes!
Haven't done an install yet, so don't know about the login screen (resolved I see in the biug overview), but that is no biggie anyways.
GREAT WORK guys!

Great job everyone, Thank you for all the hard work, ya done made a good 'un!! MX is really smoothing out well.

Sheesh! I leave you guys so I can get a night's sleep, and whilst I'm away you put out a whole new RC.
As before, installs and runs faultlessly on box in sig, and DELL D610 and DELL D630 laptops.
I'm trying hard, but still haven't managed to break anything - great job!

I know, ain't they something? Been playing all night, It's getting light out now, time to hit the hay...
Here's the PIII, installed from a dvd this time. Found a [marginally] better video card, Radeon 7500 with 64m memory as opposed to the old TNT2 (Diamond Viper 770), which had 32m.... So the installs both went off without a hitch. I'll beat and bang on these two and post back if there are any issues....
Edit:One never recovers from the multiboot addiction -- This one is XP on sda1, antiX 13.2 on sda2, sda3 swap, sda5 is MX14RC2. With the advent of MX on this drive, I allowed its grub2 to take over the MBR from antiX grub1 just for S&G. All is well, booting and running each one with no issues.

Nothing wrong with posting machine specs on successful boots. It gives people with similar machines confidence in MX-14 for their rigs.

I was running an experiment on apt-notifier. Which by the way is really slick. I downgraded mx-flash so I could get a notification. The downgrade gave me 0.13.98+git20140303-mx140+1. There was no upgrade notification after doing this. The latest version is 0.13.98+git20140304-mx140+1, but is not in the repos. All test repos are enabled. Has it not been added and still only in git?
To be clear, not an apt-notifier issue, but a latest mx-flash availability issue.

Installed RC2, hotshots is back, thank you!
Noticed one thing so far: desktop backgrounds, used to be a few, now there are only two. Easy to add, of course
Continuing the install.
How are things with virtualbox on this RC? All ok? Haven't attempted that one yet.

Do you mean installing VirtualBox or running it in VirtualBox? The latter is fully functional.

Wee little bug, noticed it in RC1 as well, now reporting
Go to menu, settings, settings manager, keyboard, application shortcuts
I wanted to change the screenshot grabber xfce4-screenshooter to another key.
Double click the shortcut, enter new shortcut combo, boom the entire line for the screenshot thing is gone for me.
I can simply re-add so no biggie.
Jerry: VB on MX14b2 was not just fine if you recall my reporting about it, and I was told to wait and things would be fixed. Something like that. Hence my asking. So this was fixed?

We re-mapped Screenshooter to the PrtSc key for RC2.
Didn't remember you had trouble before (the group not being created question?), was only referring to the fact that underlying both is the same Debian Stable base. I will try here later. I usually install directly rather than through the repos.

I would also recommend installing VB from the site (or using svmi) rather than via synaptic.

VB may need a separate topic if we run into anything. I am not done tweaking just yet, so not down to repo-install VB yet (I do that last).
Anticapitalista: why?
And what is svmi? (sorry, I guess I completely missed that thing *shrug*)

Why directly? Only because I remember people having issues when doing so via synaptic. I have no idea why there were issues.
svmi is part of the smxi tools. Type svmi in a root terminal and follow the instructions. Choose the non-ose version from Wheezy

Install from repos seems to work, but will not start after rebooting. Don't have time now to look into it, will purge and install from the website as usual.

This is an Xfce 'thing'; it's like this in every distro. There is some extra info here:
http://tinyurl.com/ovnnscf
There is no way to edit an existing entry. The way you have found, by deleting, then re-creating an entry is the only way. In my opinion, the real 'bug' is that double-clicking an entry produces a dialogue box that leads you to believe you can do something with it.
Eadwine Rose wrote:Jerry: VB on MX14b2 was not just fine if you recall my reporting about it, and I was told to wait and things would be fixed. Something like that. Hence my asking. So this was fixed?

The version of Virtual Box that Synaptic will install is 4.2.16. Sorry, I've forgotten what problem you were having, but I've just installed VB, together with the recommends, and the guest additions (10 files in all), and have successfully created a virtual XP machine.
Edit (Additional information):
After a reboot, I did
not have to add myself to vboxusers group; Virtual Box launched OK.

Yes, please start a separate VB topic if you run into problems. I would be particularly interested if a virtualbox users group is created and you user name is added.

No its not necessary. My guess is it came from Debian repo and not debian backports. As long as it is working.
Oh, debian chrome is chromium right? The meta-installer should have installed it.

The libxss1 package is in the regular Debian Wheezy repos:
https://packages.debian.org/wheezy/libxss1.
How did you install the google-chrome-stable package, Gdebi or dpkg?
Had the repos been loaded at least once either from a 'apt-get update' or by clicking the 'Reload' button in Synaptic?
(Gdebi would probably complain if the repo package lists hadn't yet been loaded)

You can add anything that is in the Whisker menu by right-clicking it, and selecting 'Add to Panel'.
Note that it will be at the bottom of the panel by default. To move it where you want, right-click it, select move, and drag the red line along the panel.

I install google chrome (not chromium!) by using a downloaded file google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb, which so far has always worked. Install using gdebi, then start synaptic and it becomes updatable, works like a peach
Bit further on in the install, vlc loses its audio upon start, fix: right click in the screen - audio, audio device, select sound there.

Dld, Burned to USB stick, Installed to desktop & Laptop this AM.
Desktop was flawless.
Laptop took a bit of tinkering to get wireless set up--Took none (zero) on RC1--Only a small amount--Working OK, now.
Created Public folders on both machines, set permissions, connected via Samba first time--Whoopee!!
Still observing the incorrect size of the install partition on the desktop box (post 332895)
A big "Two Thumbs Up".
Thanks folks.

There is a post on the Xfce forum asking why Skype can't be run on Xfce, so I thought I would report that direct download of 4.2.0 from the Skype site installs and runs beautifully in MX-14 on my AAO 722.

I am almost ashamed to admit that after all the fussing with Samba on MX, I think that I have it figured out. I had reported earlier that I was able to look both ways between my desktop and laptop running any combination of Windows 7 & MX. I do not now think that that was true.
When attempting to access MX from Windows (from either box), I was getting a log-in box requesting a password. I tried everything I could think of with no success. Spent a few hours on the web, & finally stumbled on to how to add a user to Samba. Seems frightfully obvious, now; but, not before.
Here is what to do to allow a Windows box to see an MX box.
On the MX box, obtain Root in terminal.
enter: "smbpasswd -a <username>" & enter.
Mx will then ask for a new password==enter one.
Repeat entering the password.
A reboot is not required, but won't hurt.
While thinking about this, I attempted to create another login for a fictitious user for Samba. Won't work! More research revealed that there must be a user for the machine before becoming a Samba user--Oh Well, so much for me thinking that I had it figured out. Back under my frozen rock.
Again, I appreciate all the assistance given to me, and the efforts of the group for creating this distro.

My only problem with RC2 is that not only do I suck at Chromium B.S.U., I'm also not that hot at lbreakout! (yet strangely addicted to both).

Where did the dependency come from? Did you have to add any other repo?
It's in the stock Wheezy repo, and there's just one version--no wheezy backports or updates versions to confuse apt. Perhaps the apt update had not been run yet to fill out the apt database?

Bit further on in the install, vlc loses its audio upon start, fix: right click in the screen - audio, audio device, select sound there.
Yes, I noticed that, too. I went into the VLC audio settings dialog and set it permanently there.
SMPlayer started out on pulse audio (that's what the developer has it set for) and I had to change it to alsa.

That may have been on 64-bit, I know the 32-bit Skype may have problems on upstream 64-bit Debian, if it depends on ia32-libs, which is gone upstream.
I installed from my persistent USB onto my original 2008 Acer A150 netbook over M11, saving home, and it went very well. I just had to delete my custom .asoundrc file, otherwise all my changes and new programs carried over from the USB install persistence. So very cool...
You know, I see lots of beginners on the Debian forums breaking their install adding Ubuntu PPAs to try and get netflix-desktop working. For those outside the US, Netflix is a streaming video service that takes up to 33% of Internet bandwidth during peak evening hours (Youtube about 20%), and uses MS Silverlight. I see a lot of quotes from Linux users that the only reason they keep Windows on their machines is to use Netflix...and our netflix-desktop and wine combo seem to work perfectly out of the box so far, so maybe we should push this as a feature.
The netflix-desktop build also provides for some similar services in other markets, these are Katsomo, Lovefilm, Maxdome, Redbox, and Sumo-TV2.

It's in Tools--Preferences--(Audio Button on Left)
If audio output's on Automatic, you don't have any options, but changing it to alsa will give you the option of choosing which ALSA device to use. Then you can Save the preference.

I ran into much the same problem as namida12, trying to install chromium (v32.xx) using synaptic. No changes had been made to the default repos as I had just installed MX-14 RC2 on my testsystem. See details below.
I changed the debian (US) repos to debian (NL), reloaded in synaptic and then installed chromium and the 3 dependencies without problems.
I suspect that there was some sort of availability problem connecting to the us debian repositories. Anyway, it's solved here.

Testing from a laptop, I've just noticed that the volume hot-keys don't work in RC2. It was easy enough to make them functional by selecting Mixer>Preferences, and ticking all three hot key boxes.
I was sure this worked in earlier releases, so I live booted pre-RC1, and sure enough they worked OOTB.
Would it make sense for the default to be 'on' in Final to avoid support requests in the form of 'my hotkeys don't work'?

same here. This would be the result of removing xfce-volumed from startup. I would agree that checking the boxes in the volume-icon preferences should be the default.

Flash seems to be buggy still, when checking on adobe it says I have it installed on Chrome, but something is off.
There it crashes and says could not load shockwave flash. I have updated flash with the MX flash manager.
I noticed when I wanted to start the webplayer of spotify, same issue there.
https://www.spotify.com/nl/redirect/webplayer/
Login and no dice.
Tried qupzilla, and that asked me to install adobe flash.
edit: disabled click to flash, now it just keeps trying to connect but does nothing.
You can (hopefully) see the flash issue when loading this flash game if you don't have a spotify account:
http://www.flashgames247.com/play/16136.html
Seems it doesn't always crash on the game. *sigh* just my luck to find a good example other than spotify
here is the output from syslog when starting and crashing in chrome
Code: Select all
Mar 12 17:39:22 eadwineMX14rc2 kernel: [17056.326705] chrome[1016]: segfault at 74890828 ip b247bb57 sp bfb7dbb4 error 4 in ld-2.13.so[b246e000+1c000]
Well.. seems to be only with spotify.. I would say spotify is sending a wrong something to the flash somehow.. other sites look like they are working fine. *shrug*

I just got RC2 running; have not yet had a chance to test it thourely. But I have found 1 serious 'bug' which would prevent me from using it: The flashing rectanles that come on when it is not doing something else prevent the monitor from turning off automatically! Since I normally run 'Seti-at-Home' in the background, I can't turn off the power, and I don't want the monitor to stay on.

Not a bug, just a screensaver. Click Settings Manager > Screensavers to manage. Or: uninstall. Or: manually turn off the monitor while you are gone, which is what I do now with the MX-14 torrents.

No problems for me since Beta1,2, skipped RC1 and went to RC2.
Wireless no problemo on wpa2-psk network.
On this install. I will be running SeaMonkey I think out of Opt for the practise.
I installed conky-all, moc,cmus,icecream,MTPaint, xmms, so far. Listening to Chronix radio streaming through mocp as I set this install up. Here is how she looks so far
Edit: Setting Up Seamonkey is a breeze in XFCE. Posting in it now. ver. 2.24. Flash 11.2 picked up with no special tweaking by me also.

It took me a while because I had to reorganize the hard disk to make room, but I finally installed RC2 to an old Pavilion, Athlon XP 2200+, VIA chipset. This is the one that wouldn't boot from pre-RC2 versions.
The install went perfectly, taking all of nine minutes. It would have been quicker if I could type faster.

Just a comment on this, Chrome comes with its own Flash removing and reading Flash won't change anything, I don't have access now to a computer but I think there is a way to change the default Flash by typing in address bar something like this chrome:/plugins and look where it gets the Flash plugin from.
Eadwine Rose wrote:Flash seems to be buggy still, when checking on adobe it says I have it installed on Chrome, but something is off.
*shrug*

I splurged and spent $5 to get a USB wifi adapter (shipping included) that MX is very happy with.
Here's from my inxi -F
Network: Card-1: Broadcom BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller driver: wl

Card-3: Ralink RT2870/RT3070 Wireless Adapter driver: rt2800usb

I use Card-1 in AntiX, and Card-3 in MX. No biggie, and easier than trying to get different drivers working (which I never did master).

I tried ceni and that did not work as It only showed the wired LAN.
You need another wireless driver and firmware.
Have a look at this :
http://askubuntu.com/questions/44659/ho ... rd-working
Success.
So that hardware does not work with the "wl" driver?
Hmmm, that what it looks like.
towwire, how about unloading the drivers and reloading b43 and see what happens:
Code: Select all
su
password
rmmod b43
rmmod wl
modprobe b43
ifconfig -a (to see if you get an interface now)
If that works, you can prevent the driver from loading by blacklisting it:
su -c 'echo "blacklist wl" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist'

This is at least the third discussion of problems with the Broadcom BCM43XX chip set. Previous discussions:
Wireless drivers and firmware and
Installing Jessie broadcom-sta-dkms on MX14.
ISTM that if we can't get this chip set to work OOTB then we at least need to add clear instructions on how to get it to work in the MX documentation. It would be really great if users didn't need to download anything extra to get this chip set to work but I realize this may not be possible due to ill-advised copyright restrictions.
Off the wall:
we could even have a window pop up that explains the problem and directs the user to the solution if this chip set is detected but that might be more annoying than helpful. Maybe we could add an alert icon to the taskbar or the desktop but I wouldn't want to try to squeeze this in MX-14.

You do not have to preface it with
chrome: (Minor point)
Certainly if only one version is listed and you disable it, it is disabled. There are situations where two are listed, that is why I pointed out the capability of disabling one.

On my T-43 ThinkPad, with MX installed, my Motorola WN825G PCM card (BCM4306 chipset) did not even appear with the lspci command but showed an error instead.
I edited /modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-dkms.conf and commented out all the lines. After a reboot it works fine.

BTW, MX installed on my T-43 ThinkPad still will not shut down or reboot. It just hangs at the final line and must be powered off.
[Edit]
I did the 7 upgrades presented, including the removal of systemd. Now the laptop shuts down or reboots normally. Not sure if those are related, but I'm fine with it.

Not sure about the following in RC2 today (March 13)....:
Synaptic reload shows that init-system-helpers (1.11~.. - currently installed) can be upgraded to the wheezy-backports version 1.18~bpo70+1. However, doing the upgrade would remove systemd at the same time from the MX-14 system.
I did not upgrade as I'm not sure what (negative) effects the removal of systemd would bring. Maybe none, maybe big.
Thoughts...?

Dear bitjam ,
I have to read site
http://www.instantfundas.com/2007/08/in ... -from.html about installing linux from harddisk Windows. I can not load.
Please write how tip tricks and answer my question I knowledge and english not enough understand you.
1.
blab=partition-label or buuid=partition-uuid or bdev=partition-device
How can I know with which windows tools or freeware tools label , device ? Where I must put this information (my think menu.lst , true?)
2.
We recommend you do a frugal install (copy the /antiX/linuxfs file over to NTFS)
Where I must do it ? Can I copy to another partition? In folder /boot ?
3.How can I frugal install by grub4dos or wingrub (windows XP)?
now I have 5 partitions in NTFS filesystem
4.Can I use make /home in partition ntfs or create folder home and use it ? How ?
P.S. Thank you for MX 14. Better russian localization than antix 13 I like qupzilla. Please put gimp 2 to .iso I can not use 2 hard disk for my comp. I have installed winxp in one harddisk and another MX14rc.So I know about MX 14 RC.
Thank you for give the time to answering my questions.

Take a look at the Debian wiki page for the BCM 43XX chipsets.
https://wiki.debian.org/bcm43xx
There are at least 4 different drivers available, some that will work only with a specific revision of the same chipset, and the revisions don't get reported by lspci. As far as I can see, the "wl" driver provided by the broadcom-sta-dkms driver does not work at all with the 4306 chipset, so it can be removed if you have that hardware (maybe that's what is causing the problems for the T43 above)
Instead, it uses "b43-legacy", which I believe is provided as part of the standard "b43" driver provided by the kernel.

Okay, I did some experimenting and lots of reboots. I blacklisted b43legacy and everything else except
b43 and
ssb. Those two must both be there for the card to work. First I get a message, "Network connection disconnected" immediately followed by "Network connection established with blah blah blah."
Curiously, once the card is working, the hang-on-shutdown problem disappears.

Could well be true, there are some approaches that proved succesfull.

Since you have lots of RAM, you should try selecting
F4 Options -->
to ram in the LiveCD bootloader. It will take a few seconds to copy the cdrom to RAM but after that, you system should
fly! It will be faster than running an installed system.
For bonus points, give one of your hard drive partitions the label "MX-14-Persist". Then go to the RemasterCC and enable root persistence, selecting the device with the "MX-14-Persist" label. When you reboot, again select
toram and also select Dynamic Root Persistence. Now you will have a persistent LiveCD that runs faster than an installed system.

iPhone 5 continually ask to trust this computer.
I can see the contents (folders), but the continual reminder every 7 second for trust never lets me open the photo folders. Is there something i need to download to stop the iPhone 5's poor connectivity?
I found this is a problem for non iTune computers - but no solution for IPhone5 or an iPad (A1458) that I can find. There are several references to a Ubuntu fix, but I can not find that solution to properly ask a more informed question.
http://apple.stackexchange.com/question ... x-computer
I am trying to install Google Drive to iPad & iPhone now to move photos to the computer, since I can not connect the devices. Understand devices worked earlier, but it is part of the protection apple installed to protect devices from the wormed charging cables/devices, that is tripping Linux use.

what's happening is that gdebi, while it will search the repos for dependencies, it doesn't update the sources lists automatically. try running, :
before installing google-chrome. it should find the depency and install it for you.

You have to specify which sound card for the system to use. On my system, the following procedure works:
--find card numbers with:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
--create a file in home directory
.asoundrc
--open new file and paste in
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
--use the card number that you want to be default
--reboot

Would not think the repos would change from live to install...
what's happening is that gdebi, while it will search the repos for dependencies, it doesn't update the sources lists automatically. try running, :
before installing google-chrome. it should find the depency and install it for you.
Or wait until the apt-notifier indicates that updates are available before installing the Google Chrome package.
{if it's indicating that updates are available, that means anacron has run the /etc/cron.daily/apt script and performed an automatic 'apt-get update'}

Jerry,
I used file manager to create the folder (.asoundrc) in /home/green888/
or should I have created this file in /home/?
But either location I can't seem to be able to copy and paste what you have typed with file manager, as paste is grayed out, I also tried to open root Thundar but here the paste is greyed out...
Code: Select all
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
Or should this be written as:
Code: Select all
pcm.!default {type hw card 1}
ctl.!default {type hw card 1}
Then I know what to type since i can not paste. <--Can not type either, am confused - need assistance on this one

the
file goes in your home, is named
and only contains the middle part after you have figured out which sound card you want to use. In my case it is 1, so the entire file contains only this:
Code: Select all
pcm.!default {
type hw
card 1
}
ctl.!default {
type hw
card 1
}

Many thanks to DBeckett!! You are my hero!
I, too, had the "no shutdown/restart" problem (since before RC1) until commenting out all the lines except for b43 and ssb in /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-dkms.conf file. I also no longer need the extra USB wifi adapter I was using to have wireless working.
What I suspect (and being a noob I have no clue how to prove it) is that the wl module, that MX routinely uses with great success, wasn't happy with my BCM4318. So, since wl/b43 is used by other modules (comparing lsmod output using wl and b43) having to do with the PCMCIA system on this laptop, that is the root of the problem. There was no wireless interface (wlan0/wlan1) to be found. And once wl module "didn't work" then there was always an error message near the end of shutdown about failure to unmount and the laptop wouldn't shutdown/restart.
Now all is happy, happy in MX-RC2-land.
Can't wait for final so I can install it on a soon-to-be-unsupported XP laptop that I use in another location. Then, if needed, I can comment my way to successful wireless networking, whatever the module is in that box (can't remember!).
Regards,
Phil

If it's any help to the devs, as a process of elimination, the BCM4312 in my netbook works flawlessly in MX-14 RC2. (Also ok in PCLos but Mint requires proprietary drivers but easily added).

Good. The .gtkrc file you were missing is actually in the folder .gtk-2.0, where we put it when we were setting up the clock at the advice of the Xfce developers.

Just another data point, running RC2 installed on this new-to-me Acer. Haven't put it through its paces yet, but the install was flawless, wireless connectivity carried over from the live disk to the install, and the thing is damn quick.

It seems that the .asoundrc file can also accept this simpler syntax now (what I use to set my analog sound Card 1 as the default card instead of my HDMI card 0)
Code: Select all
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.timer.card 1

You should create an account at
transifex and then start translating the
Russian.
Most of the resources are not part of MX so don't start picking things at random to translate.
This thread is for MX translations and suggest which things to translate first. It is in the
translations sub-forum.
Warning! the final release is planned in just a few days so you only have a couple of days left to make translations that will be part of the MX-14 release. My guess is that the highest priority would be the installer:
mx-minstall_en.ts. Jerry or antiC probably have a better idea of what is most important.

I have a Compaq nx6325 laptop that has an internal wireless adapter that I have used without any issues with AntiX 13.2 other than having to use ceni to activate the wireless interface upon initial setup.
I have installed MX-14 RC2 and can't seem to get the wireless interface operational. I have tried to install ceni as well as wicd to see if either one will help resolve the issue but it is not helping.
I have seen other post in the forum regarding MX-14 wifi but did not see any resolutions that appeared to help here.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Does the adapter show up in the output of either "lspci -k" or "lsusb"? If so, post it here. Identifying the device is usually the first step. Then I Google around to find out how other people got it to work and then try to figure out how to make that happen in MX. Once you identify the device, people here can help with the other steps.

BitJam,
Thanks for the input / suggestions.
Here is the output from the lspci -k command incuding the output from both antiX 13.2 as well as MX-14 RC2.
Note: It appears that the controller is known to MX-14 but for some reason I can't turn on the radio as I was able to do with ceni in antiX 13.2

Oh yeah.. before I forget.. now I don't have the old ones anymore to test, but I seem to remember (just hit me with a fish when I am wrong) that after the system boots and you get to the login screen there was the opportunity to reboot from there, not just shut down.
Did that option go away or am I seeing ghosts?

Shutdown was added after one of the betas. Reboot was never there.

Just something I seem to remember in the top of the login screen when I had a bad harddrive boot and wanted to reboot without logging in. Ah well hehe.

Actually, the original betas had both shutdown and reboot. It was decided to change the lightdm menu to include only shutdown.

Here's an old article that may or may not be pertinent (on building a rtl8111/rtl8198 driver):
http://unixblogger.wordpress.com/2011/1 ... rnet-card/
There may already be modules built in repos somewhere (I don't know), but I don't see anything other than the r8169 module running MX-14 RC2 live from a USB stick, and the r8169 driver doesn't work with this adapter (and I've tried manually removing it and reloading it again with modprobe, reconfiguing it using ifconfig, etc. -- no dice, the r8169 driver doesn't work with it, unless the install is missing firmware needed by it or something similar. But, I get the impression from some articles that a different driver is needed for the rtl8111/rtl8198 (see link above), and then you'd need to blacklist r8169, too. But, that article is from 2011, so things may have changed by now.
BTW, my wireless does work. This machine came with an Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01) installed; and it's detected just fine and using the ath9k driver in MX-14
But, I have no wired Ethernet in MX-14 RC2; and I suspect this Dell is using a fairly common ethernet chipset if it's in this model (and the XPS 8500 has now been replaced by a newer XPS 8700, so the XPS 8500 is not brand new or anything.

@JimC, I did a quick Google(Linux RTL8111/8168B) and saw lots of people had problems with this chipset. The solution seems to involve downloading a driver from the RealTek web site. IMO the big questions are: what is the license on that driver? Are we free to re-distribute it? Maybe there is a solution we can use in those search results.

IGNORE PROBLEM -- THIS WAS USER ERROR DUE TO A LOOSE CABLE
STOCK R8169 MODULE WORKS FINE WITH THIS CHIPSET
BTW, the driver from Realtek also works using the installed R8168 module (either way works fine).
Well... I don't know about the licensing. But, that driver is not working with my chipset.
I went ahead and installed MX-14 RC2 to a hard drive for further testing.
I've got the old r8169 driver removed, and even blacklisted it and rebooted after building the new driver, The new driver built fine and loads. But, the my wired ethernet does not work with it for some reason. It appears that realtek firmware is already installed. But, perhaps there is a minor diffrence in my chipset's revision or something.
I tried the latest 8.038 driver from realtek, which built a module named r8168 module I'm loading. I got it from this download page:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... wn=false#2
But, no dice (isn't working).
Not a big deal to me, as my wireless is working with MX-14. But, others with the same wired ethernet chipset (in a Dell or similar machine) may have issues.

P.S.
Same thing in OpenSUSE Edu-Life 13.1 (more apps and more repos enabled compared to the standard OpenSUSE release)-- wired adapter not working, wireless is working.
I just finished installing it to another partition on my boot SSD (setup using btrfs so I can make snapshots as desired, so I can easily back out any changes if it gets messed up). I'm using YAST to install all updates to it now. Then, I'll play with the driver issue more as time permits.
Wired works in Windows 8. But, perhaps this chipset just doesn't like most Linux distros.

@JimC, I can't work on this any more ATM. I am very interested but I have a bunch of other stuff to get ready for the final MX release.

The
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/52-force-root-for-admin-auth.conf file that forces the pkexec authentications to ask for the root password instead of the user's password is missing. It was included in the Betas.
This is the post in the development team forum:
http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewtop ... 81#p327181
and the command that creates it:
Code: Select all
su -c 'echo -e "[Configuration]\nAdminIdentities=unix-user:0\n" > /etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/52-force-root-for-admin-auth.conf'
It creates the following
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/52-force-root-for-admin-auth.conf file:
[Configuration]
AdminIdentities=unix-user:0

@JimC:
I have the same ethernet chipset in my laptop and it works fine (I never had any connect problems with it) when I use a wired connection (I mostly use wireless on this laptop though).
Running MX-14 RC2.

Guys.
My apologies. My reports of a problem using my Realtek RTL8111/8168B chipset for wired ethernet were wrong (previous posts now edited).
This was all a problem with a cable that wasn't pushed in all the way. I thought this was odd when I saw that the problem was supposedly corrected in newer kernel modules on one page about it. Then, when I booted back into Win 8, I noticed my wired network had stopped working there, too.
My wired cable wasn't seated all the way on the PC side causing the issue. A small push on the connector solved it. :-)
BTW, the 8.038 download for installing their newer R8168 driver that I downloaded from this Realtek page also works fine (that's the r8168 driver I have installed in MX-14 now):
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... wn=false#2
But, so do the newer r8169 drivers that come with MX-14 and other distros like OpenSUSE 13.1.
I also double checked to make sure the stock r8169 in MX-14 works by booting into a USB stick with it on it. No problem -- Wired Ethernet works fine with it. But, since I've already blacklisted the r8169 driver and installed the R8168 driver from Realtek, I'll just leave the hard drive install running using the newer r8168 driver.
My apologies... User error was the problem (cable not seated all the way in). There is no issue using the r8169 driver with the RTL8111/8168B chipsets using the newer drivers. Apparently, that was fixed in newer kernels some time back (so that you don't need the r8168 driver for them to work properly, as the r8169 driver also works with this chipset).
P.S.
After finding page after page about the r8169 driver not working, I wrongly assumed I had a driver issue. For example, this one, and the one I linked to earlier:
http://www.dividebyzero.co.za/blog/2012 ... -in-linux/
But, I also found some newer posts indicating the problem was fixed. For example, this one has an update at the top:
http://www.twm-kd.com/linux/realtek-rtl ... ntu-linux/
Then, when I noticed my wired ethernet had quit working in Windows, too -- I found the loose cable causing it.
Again, my apologies. User error on my part.

That's strange, I see it there now, I didn't earlier.

Dolphin has been weird for me lately, not showing files that I know are there even if I go up a level and back down. Wonder if this is related...

It's always been weird for me that way, so I've added the "Reload" button to the toolbar. Searching the web shows it's using libgamin or libfam0 to keep track of changes, but I've tried both and the problem persists.

I've seen that too. Sometimes I have to close and then re-open Dolphin to finally see what I know is there.

Where did the dependency come from? Did you have to add any other repo?
It's in the stock Wheezy repo, and there's just one version--no wheezy backports or updates versions to confuse apt.
did you use dpgk or gdebi to do the install?
Sorry did not answer question: Applications> System> gdebi

Downloaded RC2 last week, no problems at all. How far away are we from a final release? I would like to
recommend MX-14 to a group that I moderate, but if final is in view timewise, I would prefer to wait for it.
