MXFB: deadbeef

I have for a long time experienced frequent crashes when starting this wonderful player when starting, it seems, with a saved stream; the app just sits in the systray with "Unknown" in the window. According to the log, this happens during the loading of the large number of plugins:

Code: Select all

We had a crash. Will not resume the saved session to avoid a crash cycle.

This seems reinforced from a web search (OSS gets mentioned), and there is some suggestion that it may occur especially when starting a saved plugin. Haven't tested that.

As a default app for us in the Root Menu, this behavior is very aggravating. Am considering replacing with audacious which I'm starting to test now.

Re: MX 25 Beta 1 Feedback thread

#582 Post by Dawnbreaker »

Hi MX/antiX team, thank you for this wonderful project, so far so good! :) However, as we're in the Beta phase ofcourse, I also observed three problems so far during my test scenarios with the KDE Plasma edition:

1. I installed KDE Plasma edition on my Desktop PC, but surprisingly it installed tlp which is specific for Laptops (again, I have a Desktop PC). However, Plasma's powerdevil benefits from power-profiles-daemon, which didn't get installed by default, and so I couldn't set my power profiles from the bottom-right corner's energy applet, until I installed power-profiles-daemon manually. So, my suggestion is, that the installer should detect whether if it's a laptop or a desktop computer and install the tlp or power-profile-daemon package respectively and accordingly, OR install power-profiles-daemon by default for KDE edition for powerdevil to work properly out of the box natively, as it was originally designed, and as it is working (get installed by default) on Debian Trixie aswell.

2. The other problem is that both ffmpegthumbnailer and ffmpegthumbs get installed by default, which is problematic, due to how KDE's Dolphin filemanager works: Dolphin uses ffmpegthumbs as it's native backend for generating thumbnails, and for videos, and it is the only package that can generate dynamic (animated) thumbnails for video files, when hovering over the mouse of the video files. In this case, having both installed makes thumbnail generation to collide, and the video files will never animate thumbnails, only show a static image. When I removed ffmpegthumbnailer, and re-launched Dolphin, the video files now had animated thumbnails on mouse over, as they should. So, my suggestion is to not install ffmpegthumbnailer for KDE Plasma edition, as it is not a KDE package, thus reducing redundancy, and allowing Dolphin to work as it should via ffmpegthumbs - again as it was originally designed, and as it is working (get installed by default) on Debian Trixie aswell.

3. Now for the biggest problem: Nvidia drivers. I installed nvidia-drivers with the MX provided Nvidia installer, and after rebooting, it never made it past through the sddm login screen. I inputted my password, a wild black screen appeared, then it throwed me back to sddm login screen. So right now, it's technically impossible to login while Nvidia drivers are installed at the moment, which is critical issue.

Thank you!

Am considering replacing with audacious which I'm starting to test now.
Spent a few minutes break looking at this and I must admit that such a change seems like a "no-brainer":

--faster
--no crashes (so far)
--song info displayed correctly
--good support and documentation
--easy enable/disable plugin
--qt (image below) or GTK mode
--there is a wmusic in Trixie which attaches to the end of any dock, works but mighty hard to see...would be easy to get used to controls, big advantage is that when audacious is minimized it does not appear in task bar
--single check to get nice dark mode

@Melber @m_pav @dolphin_oracle See reason not to go ahead for next development release?
--would need to update mx-fluxbox (already in process): main menu, likely the config file, maybe add a key

Quick question, does 6.12.48+deb13-amd64 have the xpad module in it for controllers? Just trying to see if I can get the 360 controller to give some feedback somehow with that one. lsusb sees it when it is connected, Jstest doesn't see it (with xboxdrv it does, but only when I do this: xboxdrv --detach-kernel-driver --silent & and I guess I need something like that for xpad, maybe)

So.. I figured I'd ask if the module is even there to begin with. Given most stuff I find is very old (2015ish and such), I am not finding much that is useful other than 'install xboxdrv'. I know that, but I am trying to get the standard xpad thing to do ... something.

This is the controller: https://linux-hardware.org/?id=usb:045e-028e

Don't have QSI on hand right now, am in my regular install. But as I am trying to find the answer in google and not having much luck, maybe someone here knows: is that xpad thing even still included in the kernel?

@Eadwine Rose
I see a xpad.ko.xz module in the 6.12.43 kernel, it's probably also in the 6.12.48 kernel

Aha.. thanks, yeah.. I'd wager so. One is the default from the iso, the other is the upgrade that came through, hence the number difference.

Likely tomorrow I am going to get back to this one and see what I can pry loose in there, starting with a clean install.

Thanks again!

Am considering replacing with audacious which I'm starting to test now.

No objection from me.

Following up on @Dawnbreaker comment on ffmpegthumbnailer I would agree and doesn't seem to be any harm in removing it on my KDE system:

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache rdepends ffmpegthumbnailer
ffmpegthumbnailer
Reverse Depends:
  mate-desktop-environment
  pcmanfm-qt
Regarding his observation on power-profiles-daemon, it's not that cut and dried. When I look at installing it, I noticed that tlp was installed. So maybe the devs did detect it was a laptop and chose tlp and tlpui?

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install power-profiles-daemon
The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
  iw
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove it.

Installing:
  power-profiles-daemon

REMOVING:
  tlp

Thank you for your follow-up feedback, also I hope that these issues I listed will be reviewed by MX team to be fixed before release.
